Title: Nasal spray hormone blocker?
Post by: Lachlann on January 11, 2010, 07:37:08 PM
I was at my endo today and he prescribed me with testosterone and a hormone blocker via nasal spray. I thought that was a bit weird, the nasal spray part. Is this how it's usually done?

I've never heard of that.  I'd be curious to know the name of the drug.  I can look it up in my drug book if you'd like.  Is it possible that the nasal spray is for something else and not a hormone blocker?

It doesn't surprise me, because they have "E" in a nasal spray.  I wonder what they use?

I have never heard of that, but it does sound like a great option in terms of ease of administration. I agree with everyone who replied thus far... I am very curious! Looks like I've got some research to do.

Oh, sorry I didn't see the replies on this. I can't recall if I'm allowed to say the name of it or not but the endo called it a hormone blocker for estrogen. He said within 10 days that I was supposed to notice it taking effect and that it was supposed to help stop my period.

I'm guessing this will help the testosterone to work more efficiently, right? I've only heard of one guy who had to go on estrogen blockers but I can't recall if it was a nasal spray.

As long as you don't mention the dosage you can say the name.  After all Testosterone in a medication, as is Estrofem or Estradiol.

And you have my interest peaked, as I have never heard an "E" blocker.

I think it's called sufrafac nasal spray. I don't have it in the flesh right now, I should have it next week but the doctor's handwriting looks pretty clear. I can't get anymore information online.

I found it on-line and surprisingly it can be use by ether MtF or FtM,  althought it seems to be more effective for FtM.

Here is a couple links.

I'm not sure why this was prescribed to you.  From what I've read about the drug, it inhibits testosterone production as well as estrogen production.  I wouldn't take it, but that's just me.  I hope it does what you and your doctor want it to do.

Interesting, Janet. I guess he spelt it wrong or I'm not reading it right.

Thanks for grabbing the info.

Well it says it stops the production in the testes and the ovaries, and I don't have testes. I think that's probably why it was prescribed.

Wait...what?

you can get E in a nasal spray?

Is that going to be like the patch or whatever in saving your liver and getting a more effective dosage?

If so how does the cost compare to pills?

I think so.

I don't know about pills, but it was pretty expensive. My insurance ate a lot of the cost, though.
