Title: What gender are you in your dreams?

I have wondered about this and if it is the same for others.
I am an FTM and have always been male in my dreams since as long as I could remember. Long before I recognized myself as male.
How do you perceive yourselves in your sleep and does it correlate with your identity?

OK so my dreams have changed a bit as time has gone on. A lot of times I'm male, sometimes I'm female and sometimes gender doesn't enter into it at all. But lately I've had more transition dreams where things happen like a penis grows, or I'm a guy but I have breasts. I think as my body gets closer to what I want I have less dreams about me being a genetic guy and more dreams about the body I have now... if that makes any sense.

I choose other, because, in my dreams I am sometimes male, but I am usually trans male.. still in a female body, but not female of course. The other night I had a dream where I had a fully functioning penis, but I also still had a vagina.

I'm often clothed in my dreams & can't see my genitals. But going by my mind, hair, boobs, & body contour in my dreams, I'm pretty certain I'm female.

I ticked other.
Gender I think hasn't really had such a dominating role in my dreams. I'm always just me. Though I can recall some sexual dreams where I am female. Ick. :eusa_sick: But these occured before I came to know that I was trans.

Edit: Oh yeah, plus some sex-change type dreams where I'm on a table with a surgeon of some sort.

When I'm aware of my gender, I'm female but not dominant.
That's why I ticked other.
Addition. Having thought about it, I may have had dreams where I'm male. But I don't recall ever being dominant.
I don't usually remember many dreams, unless they wake me up.

I tend to swap around a bit - the key is that I am me in my dreams and gender is not really a part of 'em for the most part.

For the most part I am female. Sometimes I am post-op, which makes me happy. Sometimes I am still pre-op and having to do something male related, but still female. Those are nightmares.

I have many dreams when I am female and some dreams where I am male. I also have weird dreams where I have a male appearance but I know I am supposed to be female and in those dreams people treat me as if I am a female but for some reason my appearance remains male and it is frustrating in the dream.

I'm not often aware of any gender in my dreams and most of them have nothing to do with gender or sex
Some of them are sexually explicit and sometimes I'm a boy, but most often I'm a girl....Other times I'm both
But mostly my dreams are just weird and I'm 20-30 years younger than I am

Same as Aaron really but I have had dreams were I'm very female and others where I'm male but usually androgynous in some indeterminable way.
Like last nights dream which was highly disturbing. I was in a school cafe and I sat down at a table near a bunch of girls and a minute or so later one of them came and put a plate with two meat balls on it on my table, I got up in disgust and just walked away. Obviously making fun of who I am. Maybe it stems back to a recent time I was at a shop and some girl was awkward with me which kinda bothered me as I've been passing well recently. *shrugs* But yeah mostly androgynous or female.

Strangely (or at least to me), in most of my dreams I'm female. Like, extremely female. Female bodied, female minded. I'm usually straight as well. I should note that the name I get called isn't mine (birth name) nine times out of ten. It's like I'm a completely different person.
There are some times where I'm just a guy or a transguy, but it doesn't happen as often. In those dreams I feel more like myself.

I have gotten more interesting answers out of this than I expected.
When I dream I have a guys body I am a new person ( but somehow still me. I just look different) every night. I am just about always male as I mentioned before. I have had experiences as female though, but its rare. When I dream that I am female I am always in my own body as it is now, and I am dreaming up some stressful situation. This only seems to happen when I go to bed worried. I wonder if stress effects anyone else like that when they hit the pillow.

I am always female in my dreams. Sometimes post-op, sometimes pre-op and sometimes born female.
This is very confusing when I have my weekly happy dreams about being pregnant, and I am pre-op!

I'd have to say most of my dreams are first person, so all I see is my hands arms at most.
There are times there that I get a glimpse of myself in a reflection and I'll "see" what I wish for, but I can't honestly say that what I'm seeing is what I am in my dreams.
There are other times though that I can clearly tell that I am female in my dream or male. Most of the times though, it's just death and destruction / fantasy and depending on my mood that night it could mean lots of blood (in my dream) and waking up in a gasp / flight or fight mindset.
<-- should see someone about that =/

Even when I dream that I am male bodied, it is still in the context of being in an unnatural gender condition. I don't ever dream that I have a male identity. Those male role dreams are nightmares that I do have once in a while.

I'm not gender-specific in most of my dreams - just me. Before I started transition, when I had a gender I was usually male. Now, I'm usually female but sometimes male.
In the pre-transition days if I had a sexual dream I was often but not always male. Now if I have a sexual dream I am usually female and the sexual feelings are very different. It seems strange to me that I would switch like that, but I don't have a lot of control over my dreams. (Must be the hormones. ::))
Most of the time, though, I'm of no identifiable gender in my dreams.

I have dreams like another poster here- first person. I see my arms and hands. I have some pretty strange dreams these days. I'm going through major life changes and school alone is enough to affect you someway :)
I also have a hard time remembering my dreams. I really should keep a dream journal! It'd be interesting to read that after a month or so!

I've thought about a dream journal but I've come to the conclusion that my dreams don't matter. It's what I feel during my waking hours that matters the most.
If my dream causes a feeling to linger all day long, or during a week... then I have something to worry about. But for the most part they don't effect how I operate on a day to day basis.

Muffin, I have read up a bit on Jung's interpretation of dreams. He believed that the emotions were represented by a member of the opposite gender, acting as a guide or messenger. Anima and Animus, for men and women respectively.
I don't claim to be an expert, but it sounds like your subconscious was showing you wanting your testes removed, or showing your male attributes and you moved away. Not surprising considering where we are.
I have had dreams where the 'Anima' becomes the 'Animus' , and I have changed into a woman at the same time.

When I dream, I dream that I am running towards a tall female with shoulder long hair, medium build, wearing a leather skirt just above the knee, and a turtle neck top(RED). When I finally run up close enough to see who this person is I wake up.

Unless I'm dreaming specifically about gender issues, as usually happens after a therapy session or spending too much time here, I don't think I have a 'gender' in my dreams. I'll try to pay more attention to it from now on.
When I'm having a gender specific dream, it always seems that I'm a female trying to figure things out (ftm), but that's actually backwards from reality (mtf).
Dreams are weird. ???

I remember, I must have been about six or seven, telling my mother about a dream I had.
I believe I really had this dream.
I dreamed I was a little older, and that I was a boy, and that I was running after this girl that was in my class. This was somewhere downtown. When I caught her, we kissed.
I don't remember exactly what mum said, but I remember.. vaguely... that it felt like the dream was being discredited somehow. Not that it was supposed to be "bad" but that it was supposed to be meaningless.
I've had that same dream since, several times.
I'm always a boy in them, but the people I chase change. Sometimes they're girls, sometimes they're boys, and they're always someone I know.
Only, since telling mum, more often than not, I can't catch them.
And then everyone laughs at me.

I'm not sure if I have a gender in dreams.
I sound 'normal', same hair and stuff, but NO BOOBS (yay!)
Er, normally people wear pants, so i wouldn't have a clue about other gender identifying features. Unless... it's a certain type of dream...

Dreams are dreams,do they come true,I didnt think so,although some said they did and like any 'normal' person I have dreams too. When I started dressing I had dreams of looking good, feeling great, and being in a relationship with a man,WOW. Then when my dream turned to reality to my surprise,[I thought I was straight] my dreams turned to 'all my Christmas's coming at once'. Then again, maybe I just willed it all to happen, who knows.

It varies. Sometimes I'm a man, sometimes I'm a woman, sometimes I'm androgynous. Sometimes I will dream that in the middle of transitioning. Most of the time my dreams are first person and my sex in the dream isn't really made clear and has no relevance to the dream itself. I would assume that I am female in these particular dreams.
I can remember that in my childhood (before I even learned about HRT or SRS (or Gender Identity Disorder, for that matter.) I would sometimes have dreams in which I started out as a boy and then transformed into a girl, either by magic spells or potions, miracle medicines or sex change machines. I could always remember being far more content and happier when I became a girl in these dreams, and when and if I was offered a chance to reverse the change, I would refuse it.

I've always been a boy (never a man, or at least not yet - my dream-self seems to have had his development arrested in his mid-teens.) I often dream myself into a military environment or a uniform of some sort, and I look damn good in it.
When I was a kid I often had escapist boarding-school, military-school, or science fiction style "space cadet" contexts to my dreams, so the gender was relevant. You'd think those sorts of dreams would have gone away after having been in the real life military, but they didn't really, they just have some darker and more uncomfortable elements mixed in, like waking up as a boy in the girls' berthing, as well as non-gender-related stuff like falling overboard or showing up naked to a drill.

haha I thought I was the only one. I'm ftm and I've always been male in my dreams, since before I even knew what trans meant.
I actually took a gender id test online and one of the questions was along the lines of "You have a dream that you have a penis... You are (a)arroused (b)excited (c)creeped out (d)indifferent.
I replied indifferent because as I said, I've always been male in my dreams, and I think it mucked up my outcome.

To be honest, most of the time in my dreams I am outside the situation, looking down upon it but not part of it. Or I switch between the various characters in my dream. One I had recently had me as a kite struggling to gain height (no wind!) with a bear chasing after it, then a girl who tried to give the kite a t-shirt so it blended in with the sky, then a boy (who had been the kite, and was jealous of another boy who had been the bear because the t-shirt girl was paying more attention to him), then I (as the other boy) turned into a bear again, I was the girl trying to calm him down for a few seconds once more but it turned out it was just myself watching this on a screen with my friends. I woke up very confused! :D But a lot of my dreams are like that, I should be used to it by now.
Anyway, if I am human in any way, it switches depending on what characters are in my dream. If I am playing me, I am usually me but taller and with a flat chest (I wish!) or else I'm me as a genderless young child.

Some dreams I am female, some male, however many times when I am male, I am someone else like one of my friends or a character almost never the "me" that people perceive me to be. When I am female, I am me, as in the me I see myself as almost always. I find it strange, but I am consistent as a female in my dreams but, very inconsistent as a male in my dreams....

there are rarely any mirrors in my dream and i dont dream in third person so this is really a tough question to answer. how do i "feel" in my dreams? i guess like how i want to be in real life, with a womans face but super human powers.

Most of the time I'm not aware of gender in my dreams. Though lately I've had several disturbing dreams in which I'm where I am now in transition, but I've gotten my period back (aaaack! :icon_yikes: ) or I find myself topless someplace and I'm trying to find some way to hide my breasts. :embarrassed:
Often in dreams I'm riding in someone else's head. Sometimes more than one person's. For example, I once had a nightmare in which I was a psychic who was reliving a mass murder through the eyes of both the killer (a man) and a little girl who was one of the victims.

Actually I just had a very distinct dream today. The first part I was in the inner city, a soccer club or something. Everyone was very violent and homophobic. I was afraid. Next thing this cute guy kissed me on the lips. His lips smelled very good. And his lips were stuck to mine.
Next part this was this girl I had a crush on a few years ago. I was a woman this time...I had a smooth sexy tanned body, long black hair and a beautiful tanned face and a vagina...we were playing on the cliff side she was trying to murder me...but also having sex with me at the same time. it was very hot

I'm usually male in my dreams. It can be very frustrating because then I wake up, and for a brief moment, still half-asleep, I think I really am 100% male in that perfect way I always wanted to be. But then my brain catches up with reality and I feel so bitterly disappointed I could cry. :(
I still occasionally have dreams in which I am female but they don't bother me as long as they're not overtly sexual. Of course I love sexual dreams in which I am male. ;D

I just had a dream today, although I could not see myself I definitely was male, anyway I was running away from a bear, and I went into the rapids...So I was swimming through these rapids and at the end of the river I was female. I was swimming under the docks, and i took my hat off. There was this parking lot and a mexican restaurant. there was this really cute guy. we made out. i actually could see myself for a moment, i was a cute girl.

That reminds me of most of my dreams lately in how you changed from male to female.
At first my dreams were of me crossdressing where in some I was ridiculed and in others I was accepted. Then they started to gradually shift to me changing gender mid-dream and always finishing female. For instance, last night I dreamed that I had come home from school to find that my parents had found my stash of female clothing and they were giving me another lecture. I was sent upstairs to clean my room but found that my stash was completely undisturbed so I proceeded to change into female clothing. My sister knocked on my door to ask me a question (which is weird because she is in a university about 300 miles from me) and I opened it to see her staring at me. I asked what was wrong and she asked who I was and what I had done with her brother. I was confused so she brought a mirror out and I saw that I was a girl.

Lol...the transistions in my dreams aren't so pronounced...it just happens. My dreams are mostly in first person, usually when I am a male I don't ever see myself. Then something chaotic happens (like running from a bear.) Once I am free from the bear, I feel waves of calm and relief. Then almost always I find happiness, and usually at this point not only do I feel like a woman, I actually SEE myself as a woman, sometimes through third person flashes, or even reflections from invisible glass walls...not just a crossdresser, but an actual woman, not even the same person as myself, not even me if I had SRS and facial feminization. A completely different person. And the key is, I never actually see myself transistion...it just "magically" happens.
But sometimes I do look like my avatar (Jill Eclipse) in my dreams. Usually I feel both man and woman during these dreams. Maybe I never see myself transistion, because in real life I don't crossdress, only put on makeup. And I always put makeup on in the bathroom. Maybe "bathrooms" are like a reserved entity. I think I only dream about bathrooms if I actually have to go to the bathroom?

Whenever I change in my dreams I don't realize it until after someone else points it out. Then I feel bad about it if the one who tells me is a part of my family. If I am told by my friends then I feel like it is okay.

I can't go out in female clothing at all. I just haven't gotten to that point yet and I know my family would disapprove. My family knows I crossdress but I haven't actually "told them" that that is who I am. That would probably be causing the bad feeling in those dreams. I have told two of my friends and they both don't care. They said it doesn't change how they see me and they feel that all it does is let them know a little bit more about me.

That's funny I just had a dream last night where I was me, but fully female. It was kind of bizarre -- I was at some sort of amusement park with my family (parents and younger sisters), except I was wearing this American Apparel cranberry red dress that I own. The bizarre part was the strangeness of the amusement park place, the fact that I was female/in a dress wasn't really an issue, and I didn't even really notice it until after I woke up and was remembering the dream.

I wish my dreams were like yours where I could feel so secure in myself that I wouldn't even notice what gender I was. The reality, however, is that my dreams are more like nightmares of late with the feeling of shame cropping up more and more.

Hah, that's just the thing -- I was secure in the dream because that was the reality of the dream, not how things are in my daily life :).
Shame is a different story though. I don't feel shame about it -- shame is a way of interpreting an emotion, but it's also a subconscious decision. You can simply decide not to feel shame about it. That probably sounds like some kind of mind warp, but it's true. Just don't be ashamed.

It's hard to stop "thinking" that I am ashamed after 7 years of being told it was wrong to dress in women's clothing. I'm actually still in counseling and I feel it is a waste of time and that I am totally right in what I do on one level and on the other level I feel as if I could be wrong. I also don't want to hurt my parents and I guess I feel that if I told them I was a crossdresser or a transvestite I would hurt them.

That's where everything gets all muddled up -- this whole idea that wearing girl's clothes is 'right' or 'wrong'. It's something you either do or don't do. 'right or wrong' is a decision you make about it, but you can easily change your mind, or decide not to label it one way or the other. Was it 'right' or 'wrong' of me to wear the dress you see in my picture to the left there? I don't know, it was just something I did.
Part of it is also avoiding labeling yourself as a 'crossdresser' or a 'transvestite'. Cross-dressing is an action, not a quality of a person, and 'transvestite' is just an outdated term in general.
Lastly, if you tell your parents about it, whether they get hurt or not is their decision. The idea that it would somehow be your fault is a product of social conditioning, just like it's not someone's fault if their parents choose to feel hurt because the person told their parents they were 'gay' or something similar.
The point is, many of the things we think of as emotions (hurt, shame, fear, and many others), aren't actually emotions, but reactions to emotions. Sad is an emotion, shame is a reaction to an emotion. Emotions are beyond our control, how we react to our emotions is not.

Thanks. You've given me something to think on for a bit. All this time I've been telling myself that I wouldn't follow social conditioning and here I am falling prey to just that. I guess I need to start with understanding myself before I tell my parents.

Yes. For me, self-acceptance and self-understanding were the keys to going forward. It took me a long time, but once I achieved some level of those I could start dealing with the rest of it.

I am an FTM and i have always been male in pretty much everything apart from real life. In my dreams, daydreams, when i played games as a kid and even on video games i am automatically more comfortable with being in the male role.
I guess thats how i cope really, i get frustrated with being a girl but i can ignore it pretty well by just pretending im not in video games and day dreaming my life away.

Last night for the first time I can say that I definitely was a woman in a dream.
It might have had something to do with coming out to an ex-girlfriend whom I had arranged to catch up with today, and who I had decided to come out to. Probably the subconscious telling me I had made the right decision.
Also in the dream I was with a naked woman, who I believe was my girlfriend, who was showing me where she had been superficially cut by a broken jar, from the left breast to half-way down the right thigh, slightly cutting her vagina. I take this to be an indication that she was a combination of my anima (emotional subconscious) and wanting a partner, as well as wanting to have a womans body via surgery, risky but a correct choice. Any other Jungian interpretations anyone?

I've been male in most of my dreams... But, that being said, I started being feeling in my dreams one year ago, and these dreams happen every so often. Definitely can say I like being female in my dreams... :)
Had one a few months ago (I wrote it down in my iPod to remember) that I was a female, and was getting pleasured by someone. In this dream, I ended up MMA with my best friend (he is a male), and then took a bike ride under the glow of the moon. It is weird for me whenever I realize I am female in my dream. By this I mean that I really like it, but there is this intuitive feeling that I am female inside and my body matches that statement :)

Most of my dreams I'm gender neutral, and feeling dysphoric inside the dream, but lately more female.
70% androgynous, 30% female - I appreciate my dreams any way they manifest because they're like feedback from my subconscious for me to see how things are going back there.

Usually I appear in my dreams as I currently look, which would be male. Though I seem to be able to make myself look however I want as long as I am intensely thinking about it when I fall asleep.

I don't know about you guys, but Im not a gender at all in my dreams.. I'm just me.
sometimes things happen in my dreams where I would have a sex, like once I dreamt I had a penis=male, and another time I dreamt I had had top surgery=trans male.
but for the most part.. in my dreams I cant even see myself.. I just see through my eyes.

I used to practice trying to be fully conscious in my dreams. At one point I as able to literally transform myself to whatever I wanted. Though the side effect generally was that this woke me up.
Otherwise it varies. I have some awesome female dreams and boring normal ones too.

I'm usually no specific gender (except sexual dreams). Last night I was obviously in a male role - there was a woman I was taking care of. It wasn't sexual at all, but the role was clear.
Fortunately I see my therapist today. Perhaps my brain is still sorting things out, since I'm less than six weeks post-op. Or perhaps I will always be a dominant woman, caring for other women who need some protection. ::)

When my dreams are sexual in nature, I am male about 80% of the time. But when they aren't sexual, I don't really have a noticeable sex.

Idk really. I did have a dream I was hanging out with the Kardashians and Lil Kim and I was a girl, like them.

My dreams have been weird lately, like a continuation of the previous day. I am usually dressed in whatever I was wearing and exactly what I am now; a male in a females body. I have male parts in my dreams but was never fully male... i don't know how to explain it its just weird

I recently had a dream where I was with my (also trans) boyfriend, and we were both female bodied, which makes sense because I think it was about my anxiety about having sex in this body, as well as not knowing whether he has the same anxieties.

Heh for the first time last night I dreamt that I had a penis and it was mine a part of me it was exactly the size and everything that I want. In the dream it was like I was looking down at it and just thinking yees finally I am a man on the outside. I was so happy in the dream and felt very confident with myself. Idk if this is to be sign of things to come or what but the dream defintly made me feel very happy :) Best dream I had in forever heh

Usually I'm not aware of my gender at all in dreams. I recall one I had when I was 13 or so in which I was a lesbian, but the reason that one stands out to me is that it's one of the few dreams I've had where I was definitely female.
Lately in all of my dreams I've been introducing myself as Sly. Before I rarely told people my name unless it was necessary.

I have been dreaming that I have been a transman since I decided to transition, but the dreams I remember from when I was younger I was a cisgendered male. Now and then I have really annoying dreams where I am a normal male but everyone says "but look you have female parts" :-\

Ditto about the likening it to watching a film.
However, even as a child I can't recall a time where I was female in my dreams... My mind makes up some pretty weird scenarios, too, but I've always been male. Maybe I've only been female in some nightmares, but those occur once in a blue moon.

It is a rare occasion if I can actually remember a dream.
In my dreams I am just me without paying any attention to what is between my legs or on my chest, I am just a character moving along in a story. But I don't feel any different than in real life so I guess that means male.
Just now I realize that I never went to a toilet or had sex in a dream. ;D

Couldn't submit a vote....
But could if a box for consistently or predominantly female.... had been an option....
Even pre-transition.....lol

MTF I used to switch regularly, sometimes I would dream in a third person and not realise it was me, sometimes I know and sometimes in the first person,
Since I have started exploring my gender and sexuality questions I have almost always dreamt of being female.

I never really remember, I just always remember the ones where I come out, or if I'm female. I remember those because I wake up, realize it was a dream, and become very, very let down.

Wow, I had a very wierd dream and don't know what to think of it.
It is rare for me to recall dreams after waking up, but this one is as clear as glass to me.
It began with me entering a large hall filled with all the people I know sitting at tables and socializing.
While slowly walking to the center of the hall I realized what I was wearing: a pure white wedding dress which somehow didn't bother me. There was however not a sign of a possible wedding in that hall. After this realization I looked at the faces of the people around me. Nothing was said, there were only congratulating smiles directed at me.
What is my subconsious trying to say to me with this piece of imagination?

I voted "other."
This. Except sometimes I'll have nightmares that I'm naken in public, and in those dreams my body is female. And I occasionally dream that my body is male, but sadly it's not that often.

I am female but once in a while, I have an anxiety dream about being trans...that someone has questions me or makes trouble for me because they know my past.

I don't normally even notice my gender in dreams, but when I do I'm either male (but not trans) or male and trans (and worrying about it).
