Title: Another haircut thread (with pictures)
Post by: Banf on January 27, 2010, 06:29:42 PM
Ok I very much need to get it cut and can't decide how.

Here's my hair currently (I squared off the 'sideburns' yay), and then a couple of photoshop edits kinda trying to show what I'm leaning towards.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F2e3ahr9.jpg&hash=c09dd064b4312c6155e5ecb56389fdd45fc1d5c4)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2Facxyyo.jpg&hash=9987bbf747b5095c4a381246fa8c5b6bcf329382)(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F2cf86j5.jpg&hash=8c2b8e61e610228692ddddf66cbe0ada1883dc91)

Inspired by this kinda cut, btw.

I want to try the clippers, but it'd be a big change for me, and I'm not sure if I have the face for it..

Any idea what clipper length something like that would be for the sides n back? 2? 3?
I also chucked in some black plastic glasses since people were suggesting I go for different frames in the "Do I pass" thread. I think they might be too dark for my face, though?
I'd also love to have a bit bigger range of in-focus vision than I do with these teeny frames. :/

My other option is just trimming what I got at the moment.

Any opinions welcome, cheers!

You look fine as is.

Nah, it's too long at the moment. It's getting a mullety at the back, wearing a coat or hood makes it stick out for the rest of the day, and it gets in my eyes at the front. You can't really tell from that pic. P:
I could just go for a trim, with the added bonus of possibly wrangling my mum to do it (just like the good old days..)

I like the middle photoshop edit. If you can get that kinda squared off look at the top and not have it look too rounded that should give a good masculine look.

As far as glasses go you might want to just go try some frames on and see what compliments your face. I know I can't pick out a pair until I've seen how they look on me. :P

Looking good, man.  If you go with the third pic, you could just gel it up to get the middle one.  That way you can have one cut but two different styles depending on how you wanted to wear it that day.  I'd just be careful about cutting your hair too short in the back and sides.  If you don't have the right head shape, it can look really fem.  You should be okay though from what I can see. :)

Agreed but like someone else said maybe not too short at first on the back and sides if you have a delicate feminine looking head/face - I don't know sometime too short get you pegged as a lesbian though, which none of us want. But the sides are definitely better squared - good job and looking good  :)

My hair gets that way too... it was getting too long so i went and got it snipped. Still uncertain about it though (since it's the shortest it's ever been - don't know if it hurts or helps my "passage.")

I would go to someone you trust and get a trim first. Then if you think it's too long, have them trim off a bit more. Then a bit more. It's better to start long then go short if you want, as opposed to going very short and possibly not liking it.

Good idea doing photoshop edit though. Gives you a bit of an idea of what you'll look like (wish i still had photoshop..)

Me with my new cut (can't see the back well but it's short - she used clippers but don't remember what number)  ;D :

First off: nice photoshop editing.

I think you look good as-is, but I like shaggy hair *shrug*.  Either the flat-top or the one where it's hanging down look OK, but be careful about shaving your head.  If your skull is at all feminine, a short buzzcut  (even if it's only the sides) will accentuate that.  When I get my hair buzzed, I get a #4 taper (short on the sides, longer on the top); it seemed to work OK passing-wise when I was pre-T.  The #4 is about 1/4" long, maybe a little more.

I like the glasses you have now, but I guess that's just because I've never been much a fan of thick black glasses.

I think the third one would look best. But I dunno I'm not exactly a good judge of haircuts.  But still, I think it would give a good masculine look. Or just trim what you've got cause that's cool too.

Also: I envy your photoshopping.

Until last Friday my hair was buzzed on one side and longish bangs on the other side to a length similar to your current bangs. I can still feel those bangs poking my eyes and falling in my line of vision. I ended up buzzing it all over (see profile pic) mostly from frustration and upkeep.

And while this style (shortest I've ever had) may not be the "coolest" look, I have been amazed at how well it helps me pass. I can't say one look or another would be the most passible since these things are hard to gauge even with photoshop, but thinking in terms of shorter with less bangs may be something to bear in mind when choosing hairstyles. :-\

Ditch bangs. They soften features.

Inspired guy 1 looks like he's got a dead... something or other on his head

Inspired guy 3 - 4 kinda looks like there's been a bowl involved in his cut somewhere.

Your photoshops can be done with the one cut, different use of product (I can't believe I just said "product" in that context  :-\. Satan is skating to work).

The guard I think you are looking for is a #2, but I'd say start with a #4 and work your way down.

I think it looks fine the way it is, no need to try and meet a military standard>.<

If you're sure of this though, then both your other options you've posted looked good too:D

This is definatly a question intended for people who are too young to remember the 70s!!  :D

Best of luck Banf

Ah, cheers for the feedback! Almost everyone commented on my hair letting me down in the "Do I pass" thread. Now most people say it looks ok as it is! 8)
I guess I just pass better if I don't style it at all, which is absolutely fine with me.

So I think I'll get a trim for now, though I'll definitely try the buzz at some point. I've always been tempted, but I'm not eager for a more lesbian look..

Good plan! But I need to find a trusted hair person. I had dreadlocks for the last few years.. No haircut needed. P: Where I got it cut short the first time seems ok, but they have stupid pricing systems. It'd be £40 for a trim, exactly the same as it would have cost me (if I didn't sneak a 50% off..) when they spent an hour and a half chopping all my hair off. ¬.¬

I am tempted by the quick and dirty cheapo place up the road. It can't be that bad, right? :D

Oh boy, I remember that! That thread: 'You need to change your haircut! It's keeping you from passing!'  This thread: 'Stop finicking about it! You look fine!'  ...Wtf? Well, personally, I'd recommend you try that second cut, since it's not only shaved, but boxy, just so that you'll have tried it- have you ever gone that short? If not, and you don't know if you'll like it/it'll make you look more masculine, well, there's really only one way to find out! ...And if you don't like it in the end, hey! It's just hair, so it'll eventually grow out, get all shaggy and you can go for a different cut all over again. And thankfully, since it's hair, even if the cut isn't as flattering as you might like, it isn't as if the haircut is like a badge that says 'I HAVE A VAGINA' on it. :) Because hair is hair, right? Good luck, Banf, and post pictures when you do get it cut so we can see you~!

I gotta say, you look so much like this guy I knew...  A LOT like him.  Almost exactly like him; you could be twins!  Kinda weird and awesome at the same time.

I really think the top and front look good, and I'm familiar with that "mullety" feeling too, so my advice is to just get in shortened in the back.

Also, I really like your glasses.

Haha, really? :D Cheers.

So I got it cut yesterday, and I'm sorry Karri it's nothing exciting! :p Got a bit fed up with it, went to the quick and dirty cheapo place up the road, and just said "back and sides shorter, and get it out my eyes".

So I just wanted to ask, I can have it sticky up or sticky down.. I think up makes my face look longer/more masculine perhaps. What ya reckon?

Also I don't know how it can be so much harder to take a non blurry picture with my camera than it is my phone. :/ Down side is my phone pictures turn out orange!

Looks somewhat better with it sticking up; as you said, it makes your face look longer.  Also, you'd make a convincing Harry Potter in the bottom right pic :P.

Up.  It makes you look a little older too.  Not sure if you care about that, but the sticking up definitely helps.  The sideburns look pretty good like that.  Just make sure they don't get too long or pointy and you'll be fine.  :)

it helps a lot

and I love it UP, very Dr Who. the bad thing about short hair is you need haircuts about once a month, i could use one again lol.

Up looks better, but where I live that style of hairdo is often limited to the age of late teens.. Hair becomes flatter and frames the face when guys get older/jobs/etc. So I'm not used to seeing it up for young adults, though I really have to agree with everyone else: Up, definitely.
