Title: Sounds crazy, but bear with me: Dyslexia & Androgyny linked???

I myself am dyslexic, and fall within the realm of Androgyny. The way I use to describe myself is "Male Lesbian", a male who's brain is wired like a females. I've met a few other dyslexics who fall under the "Male Lesbian" category, as well as many who are gender-queer. Does anyone else see a possible link between the two? Just a thought.

Perhaps. I've heard this before. Dyslexia seems to be pretty common among the transgendered.
I have a related thing where I can't create consistently shaped letters with my hand writting. I seem to be a little dyslexic too in the sense that sometimes I know how to spell something and other times I just don't, certain spellings bother me (I spell better while typing oddly enough).
If you consider that ->-bleeped-<- could be caused by brain stuff, maybe it has common links with the causes of dyslexia. The brain is just one big ball of compromise and balance, put something out of wack and something else will be affected.

Same here, Nicky. My handwriting is atrocious and I sometimes can't remember how to spell a word - right after i've typed it a few minutes before :D Dyslexia? I dunno.

There is also a high rate of ausbergers among male lesbians. Or was it love shy males...I forget now.

Oh. and for what it's worth...I'm a terrible speller, my grammer is worse and I'm somewhat dyslexic.

I'm mostly dyslexic with numbers. Always had a horrible time with math in school, especially with things like long division. I understood the process, but couldn't get the right answer because I was constantly flipping numbers around as I wrote them.
I think its a visual thing for me, because If someone is telling me a phone number or something out loud, I can copy down correctly, but if I'm reading numbers and re-writing them, I'm way more likely to get them wrong.

I'm exactly the same way, right down to being good with the process but flipping numbers around when I write them. When I look at numbers on a page (or screen) and then go to write them... something gets lost in translation. Once I figured out what was happening (and for a long time, I just figured I was bad at math, which is not the case at all), I learned to deal with it. It takes concentration and double-checking, but it has greatly improved and is now rare. Which is good... engineering is a bit math-heavy and not forgiving of error.
As for the correlation between dyslexia and people on the TG spectrum (androgyny does have a place in it, correct?), I would like to see an actual study over a significant, randomly selected TG population... probably not likely to happen, but it would be interesting.
I will throw in that the two transsexuals that I know IRL are both dyslexic.

I don't have dyslexia but I do consider myself to have what seems to be thought of as the aural form of dyslexia.
Words that are spoken sometimes just sound incomprehensible to me. My hearing is okay and I think my grasp of the language is average or good in other respects.

Not androgynous. Not dyslexic. I doubt there's a link somehow. For what it's worth though, I'm great with English and could be better with math but my handwriting is illegible.

I was formally diagnosed as dyslexic in my middle childhood. It was pretty avant-garde stuff in the late 1960's, but amazingly I suddenly seemed to grow out of it completely in my very early twenties.
So either the diagnosis was flaky, or maybe all the estrogen and progesterone which I started popping in my late teens fixed something in my brain for me.
Personally I have always thought that the HRT did indeed do something like that.

I'm very dyslexic w/ numbers, but not w/ letters. I sometimes get ahead of myself when talking and will mix up words, not sure if that's a form of dyslexia though.

I am dyslexic, spent many an hour going over flashcards. I still have trouble when I'm tired.

yes, dyslexic and androgyne. Just dailing a phone number can be a challange.
I wasn't aware of left and right untill I began learning to drive. I would panic when the driving instructor said, "take a left". I solved that problem by labeling my hands.

Quote from: tekla on February 02, 2010, 09:27:25 PMI don't think anyone is arguing for a causal relation (dyslexia causes androgyn... icity, or the other way around). Nevertheless, I am inclined to agree that this data counts for very little. What we seem to be dealing with is a confirmation bias: where the ones who don't have dyslexia simply aren't replying, and we remember cases that may fit with this theory as opposed to those that don't.
Correlation is not causation
I'm only toying with the idea of being an androgyne at present, but for example:
I am (running under the assumption that I might be) an androgyne;
I am not dyslexic. Therefore, not all (potential) androgynes are dyslexic.
"Ah," you might say, "but there's only one of you. Compare that to the twenty-something of us!"
But the proportion among the twenty-something (plus me) of us says nothing about the proportion in the larger group outside of us. The sample size is entirely too small to draw any meaningful conclusion, and we should resist the temptation to do so.
</scientific explanation>
Yeah... Anyway... I'm not dyslexic, and I'm at least transgendered (umbrella term that it is), so there's a bit of dissenting opinion for you.

I have seen data that Androgyny has higher percentage of bisexuality (attracted to both or all genders) and social maladjustment (in addition to related gender behavior and/or characteristics) which had positive correlations. I have read the data for aspergers and asexuality, and had not found sufficient data for any correlation. Dyslexia vs androgyny I have yet to come across any other data anywhere else.
Not dyslexic. Just a poor at grammar and spelling.

Androgyne, asexual, aspergers. Not dyslexic. Perhaps there is a link, but without proper studies we can only speculate! :)

Just a thought there are a lot of different conditions of the brain that doctors dont realy understand
the brain is something that we know very little about maybe all androgynes have something not "Normal' in whatever part of the brain has to do with gender identity and if there are many different parts of the brain that are involved then potentaly we may all have some diagnosable condition of the brain that noone knows has anything to do with gender.
I've seen comments (on this and other forums) relating to do with a few conditions I had a brain turmour removed as a teen that had probably been there all my life I've also felt "different" all my life only recently realized gender issue.
I'm curious as to what other brain canditions people who are androgyne may have although this may point to thoughts of well we are all sick which we are not. but it is an interesting thought

Hi...
Yes there are a few of us who are andro ,
& a few of us are dyslecea now thats one way i see it in my head & like many other words i can not spell ,& much to do with english like explaining my self in words on paper .
very frustrating i can tell you .
i have to look up & copy them every time so i have dyslexia major even down to 4 lettered words ,
Now if it has any thing to do with being a andro
that may have to do with other details in our brain allso i am both left & right handed .
& there are other details i have yet there are a good number of things i cant do . computers for one ,
& over the years i have had to skirt around things to get things done so learnt other ways to do it.

Very androgyne and very dyslexic. My mum, sister, aunt and grandmum all have varying severities of dyslexia as well though- it can run in families- and they're all thoroughly female.
