Title: SRS at the PIH in Phuket Thailand

Hieezz,
I am wondering if anyone else is scheduled to have SRS in Oct of 2007 in Phuket Thailand? My date is set for October the 9th :).
For any Canadian girls here I have costed this trip out at 13,000.00 Canadian all inclusive allowing for a one night stay in hotel Before checking into the hospital and an additional 2 weeks hotel after being discharged from the hospital. It includes roundtrip airfare via AirCanada to Phuket, modest traveling money, the surgical costs. NOTE: the costs were based on USD and converted to Canadian currency allowing for a 15% difference in the respective dollars.

Please tell me how it goes. I have heard more bad stories (and actually saw one of the results with my own eyes) than good from Dr. Sanguan.

Hi Melissa,
I will do that. I was getting a bit worried as I had not come accross any new testimonials about him until several days ago, all of which were positive by the way :). The latest ones covered work he has performed this year as well.

That's good. The people I talked to (in person by the way) had seen him in 2001 and 2005. The one I saw was the 2005 model. I hope you have better luck though.

Hieezz Melissa,
It is a major surgory and I think as long as the surgeon has the skills it matters not who they may be. They have all had bad cases at one point in time or another if you dig deep enough. Worse scenario for me dying on the table, but even with that My transition would be over with :).

Yes, for the girls it's the Vulva line of cars ;)
For the boys it would be the Outie line of cars ;D
Now will you be getting a foreign or domestic one? Perhaps one made in Thailand.

I have also heard some not-very-nice stories about Dr. Sanguan and seen several results of his work online. As far as I know, and according to what I have seen, heard, and read, Dr Suporn Watanyusakul is the best SRS surgeon in Thailand.
A friend of mine told me once "if things are just too good to be true, then they probably are".....I mean $2000 for a vaginoplasty and $4000 for FFS sounds way too good to be true in my opinion. :-\

Hieezz Tink,
I agree with what your friend said. Where did you ever come up with those figures?, as they are not what Dr. Sanguan is charging. His current rate for Vagio (penile inversion with scotal skin graft is $8000.00 USD). I don't know what he is charging for FFS as it does not interest me.
Dr. Suporn seems to be in high demand and it is reflected in his current rate of $11,800.00 USD for a vagioplasty. There does seem to be some confusion over whether he ALWAYS uses a thigh donar site for the graft though.
A good number of the other Thia surgeons seem to be in the range of $5500.00 to $6500.00 USD for the vagioplasty.
Can you or Melissa post links to the recent bad cases that Dr. Sanguan has had? I have read the info that use to be on Anne Lawerences site about that case, and in my opinion that individual was un-realistic and co-operative.
Dr. Sanguan seems to be in the middle of the feild with his fee not bargain basement and not expensive, so it seems to be realistic to me. In fact his price is pretty much in line with Dr. Reed in Miami if one allows for the costs of going to Thailand.
I also have read up about the use of vacume to assit in tissue growth/healing which I find appealing plus the added time afforded him for his artistry by using a 2 stage operation. So I think that Dr. Sanguan is an over all good choice.

No I can't point them out because they are the results of personal friends of mine (in person). One of whom I just talked to yesterday.

It is very important that with regards to SRS that factual information be posted and described that can be verified and therefore used to arrive at sound decisions. Hearing about bad SRS results is just that, hearsay, and while members say that they saw a bad example of this surgeons work we need to be told what was bad about it (poor depth, lack of sensitivity, appearance, scaring, etc.). Remember photos can be questionable as well.
We tend to praise work that we have had done over the work of others as we all want to be seen as having made the best choice, we don't want to be seen as having settled for second best rather than "the" best. I'm not saying that the surgeon in question is bad , good or otherwise, we need information that can be reviewed, researched and verified by members to assist them in making sound decisions, especially with surgery that is so life changing and expensive.

I went to Dr. Preecha and I thought he was good. I have since learned that he doesn't do the surgeries anymore. That he is training doctors in plastic surgery and has had a lot of Thai doctors that have trained under him. He did mine and I guess I'm one of the last. He still supervises all the surgeries as he is part owners in that hospital.

Also regarding contact info, I don't think they would be so happy if I gave that out either. Basically, both had rather bad complications and both are unhappy with the results.

Hiee Melissa,
I would never expect you to divulge anything about them unless you talked to them before hand and had their approval. Perhaps you could tell them that I am booked for a penile inversion next year and if they have had a bad experience I'd be MOST interested in hereing about it if they are willing to share the experience with me. They may e-mail me at the following addy:
brina_e_k@yahoo.ca
I would not want anyone to share that type of information if it is likely to cause them any emotional suffering though.

Hi Brina,
If you try googgle search and type SRS HORROR STORIES, you will come up with many links which talk about this subject. The complaints you read here basically have to do with infection post SRS, no vaginal depth, poor medical service and even a rectovaginal fistula.
COSTS (http://users.tpg.com.au/kymgrace/SRS_Phuket.htm)...although the figures are from a few years back, it just seems incredibly inexpensive in my opinion.
MORE COSTS (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/20060820-1050-jonbenetramsey-sexchange.html)
FFS AND MANY OTHER FACIAL SURGERIES (http://www.cheap-plastic-surgery.com/articles/thailand.html)
RECENT BOOK WHERE YOU CAN GET THE LATEST INFO (http://heartcorps.com/journeys/everything/voice.htm)
Like I said, google search provides more information, and the recent book (link provided above) is a good source of information for anyone....pre-op, non-op, post-op.

Hiee Tink,
Thanx for the links I will have a look at them. As to the Thailand cost vs North American, I think alot of that has to do with the Medical Malpractice Insurance that doctors carry. A prime example of that is Dr. Reed in Miami. His cost for a penile inversion with scrotal skin graft is I think ~ $12,000.00 USD compare that with the other surgons charging an average of $20,000.00. Part of getting SRS with him is signing a waiver that he / nor the hospital will be sued by you in the event of catastrophe. No waiver NO surgory! I would also suspect that the overall costs of operating a world class hospital in Thailand is considerably less then in North America. Viewed from a perspective OUTside of North America the Thialand fee's seem fairly equitable for everyone concerned.

From what I have heard that Dr. Reed charges the least amount but did you look at what it is for the money. You will have to put yourself up in a motel in Florida for 5 to 14 days. That cost money. You only stay in the hospital for 24 hours. Then you are on your own. Then you have the second surgery in about 3 months which is not part of the 12000 that is quoted. So another flight down to Florida and another motel bill. I don't know any more hidden costs but that put me off completely. If I can't stay in a hospital then I don't want that doctor to operate on me. My stay in Bangkok was all included, 50 dollars a night more my wife could stay with me in another part of the hospital. I knew how much I was spending.

Dr. Kunaporn performs sex reassignment related procedures like SRS, BA and Tracheal Shave.
He recommends his colleague Dr. Rushapol Swadat/Sdawat (excuse the spelling) for FFS and body contouring procedures and he is not that cheap either. These days, most Thai surgeons are more or less around the same price margin. I am not suprised if there are a few women around with bad results from him but also there are people out there who had complications from other surgeons and ended up visiting Dr. Kunaporn to get fixed. There are a few negative stories on every surgeon on the internet if you look deep into it. But people focus more on bad news as it travels faster. Like I always say to everyone who asks me for advice, having SRS overseas is risky business, there are good surgeons in Thailand but risks still do exist, you just have to do your homework well and go with your instinct and hope that it all goes well. That's the best you can do. Even if there are minor things to be fixed after, that's okay; it is not uncommon to go back for revisions. People who work in the health area and women who have a good network with others know this is normal.
