Title: Did you work in 2009?
Post by: juliekins on February 20, 2010, 02:53:50 PM
I'm trying to get a handle on unemployment in the TG/TS community. I'm trying to determine how much higher or lower it is here versus in the public at large.

I'm limiting the poll to those who are living full time, and/or are preceived to be gender variant. Of course those who are "stealth", are invited to participate in the poll. Those who live in their birth gender and are gender non-conformist only in their own homes, are asked for purposes of this poll not to participate. Thanks!

I've been transitioning while on the job for several years now, and being a full time student, can't work full time hours because FT has to have a much more open availability. Did 25-35 hours/week there last year. Of course, where I work, 30 hours is full time...

I didn't vote because I'm retired.  That doesn't count.  But I'm interested in how your poll turns out, Julie.

I've been unemployed for way too long. x_x

for 2010 I have a plan though to make enough to not care about having a job

I've amended the poll now to including a retirement option, Kate. Thanks for the tip!

I worked full time because I'm self employed, but the bad economy hit pretty hard. I didn't make nearly as much as I did the year before doing the same work (freelance artist).

There needs to be an answer for STUDENTS

I was a full time student on a Masters Degree course throughout 2009.

I'm a student ... and it's a full time job (i.e., with a salary and everything) ... and I took a semester off because of my transition ... so I was employed less than half the year, which sucked.

I had full time employment all of 2009 (I've been at my current company for 5+ years now) but I am reluctant to say I did much "work"   >:-)

I didn't actually transition at work until late November/early December, but I was out at work in September. Like Autumn, I've also been transitioning at work in secret for years.

Living full time since late 2006, employed full time since late 2007. Most of the "milestones" in my transition were achieved in 2006, so by the time I got my first "real job" I was at the point of just working & saving up for SRS.

I was a full time student last year but I've got a part time job this year.  Oftentimes trans peeps complain about "the economy".  Well let me tell you something, if you want a job, you've got to get your butt out there & look for one.  If you spend your entire time fooling around on trans support forums, of course you aren't going to find anything.  No mystery boss is going to come knocking on your door & make it "all better".  You've got to get yourself out there & look for employment.  I'm from Bulgaria, my native language isn't English, I've got a student visa & a limited employment authorisation by the USCIS, & I just found a part time job at a public library.  If I can do it, you can too but if you sit at home wasting your time on trans forums, guess what, you're going to find nothing.

I worked full time in 2009.  2010 is a different story.   It looks like I am about to be made redundant.   The reason, my managers are a joke, they were asked to restructure the office and remove a layer of management.   So they called my job a management position and cut it.  This is despite them forcefully stating my job was not a management position six months ago.

Well to be fair, posting on message boards and looking for work aren't mutually exclusive.  :)

I worked in 2009.  I run my parents' business & I'm literally my own boss, so I dunno if my vote counts since I don't work for an employer.

No, I was unemployed most of 2009.

Lost my job after 26 years of work for that company, because of a bad economy.  :(

Since retirement was better than facing "accidents can and will happen" once I came out, I chose the safer route.  Income was halved, lifestyle crunched.  I did manage to do a few extracurricular income earning events but finding work as me, in my filed of expertise, was pretty depressing.  Lesson: construction is for men, regardless of your talent, experience or knowledge.

I'd consider myself one of the under-employed.  And that's only because I have a retirement income.  Otherwise, I'd say I'm unemployed.  I wasn't ready for retirement, nor did I want to retire.

Unless i've totally misjudged your age, over 16 you can work in most places

I'm just waiting to reach that 'magic' number.
So yeah, no job. Nowhere is willing to hire me for a while. Yes, I'm young.

Does "full time student" apply if it's compulsory education?

I was unemployed all of 2009. After almost 500 resumes and applications since September of 2008 I had only 3 interviews and just today got hired.

The latter part of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 I didn't search too hard for a job because I was focusing on transition. After my name change in April of 2009 I went full speed. I got back into school and started looking in earnest for a job.

Jobs are extremely hard to find around here right now.

Began my transitioning at the end of 2008 just prior to being hired by the trucking company I currently drive for.

Began living full time early 2009.

Still with the same company now for 15 months.

I'm one of the lucky ones whose employment was not impacted by my transition.
