So I have a secret — it's not one I'm trying to keep, but that's the way it turns out anyway. Every time I'm given a form, try to update my Facebook profile, or fill out a job application, I always come to the inevitable question: "male or female?"

The thing is, gender — and mine in particular — is messy and complex. The best way I've heard it all explained is that "sex is what's in your pants, gender is what's in your head." In most cases, the two are connected, but not always — which is where ->-bleeped-<- comes in. Nobody really knows why, but some people have an internal concept of their gender that's the complete opposite of what their body implies.

But me? I'm not transgender in the typical sense. Maybe I'm just offbeat.
