Title: Spiders
Post by: Hannah on March 09, 2010, 05:48:16 AM
Seriously, who the hell thought those vulgar little creatures up. It's like god gave the devil one choice of something to make, and unlike the John Ritter version of the devil, it wasn't trees.

The Wet West coast with all the big, big trees and very little frost is very fond of spiders.  All kinds.  Lots and lots and lots of them.  Coastal Redwood rain forests must be ground zero for the entire notion of spiders.  Spiders look at this area of the world like it is  Olympus, Valhalla, and Xanadu all rolled into one.

And California has big assed very scary wolf spiders, wild tarantulas, and the never popular Western black widow spider.

The fear of these things is generally greater than the threat.

I understand that, during the entire 20th century, there were only 20 cases of people actually dying from spiders.

13 from the Australian funnel web.

So, that leaves 6 in the rest of the world.

That can't be close to being right.  I'll bet its at least a couple hundred a year.

I'm going to GIS this and find out.

Post Merge: March 09, 2010, 09:23:46 AM

Yeah, from bites and mostly from complications, and its almost all children under seven, and the worst offender are the members of the recluse family of spiders, a few hundred per year, all young, and largely in the third world.

I hate spiders! We have the brown recluse, wolf spider. and black widow around here and those are all pretty nasty. but what I am scared of more than those are the little jumping spiders that always seem to make their way inside.

I know they are not that dangerous but, I am dreadfully afraid of them. I am afraid they will jump at and bite my eyes, I know that sounds irrational, but due to this fear I won't even get close enough to use a shoe on them. I have found I an throw a copy of the PDR with accuracy and spider killing force about 20 feet.

I don't hate all spiders... Just the venomous type

We have the Hobo spider (AKA Aggressive house spider) where I live

I basically "Go to WAR!!!"  :icon_2gun:  with them for a few months out of every year

Left untreated their bites can swell up with infection and become very nasty

There was a famous Australia singer called Slim Dusty (country and western), and he wrote and sung this song "Redback On the Toilet Seat" (http://www.mp3lyrics.org/s/slim-dusty/redback/) and starts of:

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
I jumped high up into the air,
And when I hit the ground,
That crafty red-back spider
Wasn't nowhere to be found.

Me, I am not scared of spiders, creepy crawlies or venomous snakes.  However, when I encounter them, I just take care.

Kind regards

I've been afraid of spiders all my life. I used to be terrified of them when I was a kid. Now not quite so much but they still scare me if they're big enough

If they're super super tiny, I won't mind. If they're in a spot where it's dangerous for them, I move them to somewhere less dangerous

Last Summer, I went to climb in my top bunk bed and I was just about to lay my head down until I looked in the folds of my pillow and saw a decent sized spider. I did all I could to mute a scream lol

If I see a spider crawling on my sheets, then I will freak out a little, but otherwise I love them.  They kill and eat all sorts of nasty other insects you really DON'T want crawling around your house, like earwigs, silverfish, flies, centipedes, etc.  Spiders are like the cats of the insect/arachnid world.

My cat is quite fat, rarely bothers to hunt, and is the only pet in the family that comes IN the house to poop. The dogs think he's disgusting. They are going to have to go stay with my brother for a couple days while I bomb for spiders, because they are waking up with the changing weather and overruning my house.

I especially love jumping spiders. Many of them are cute as hell rather than intimidating. They are active hunters--I think that's cool--and they operate on hydraulics. Isn't that neat? They just adjust the pressure of their blood, and VOOM! they're hopping all over the place.

Once my then-partner and I were hiking around our alma mater and wound up in a field off the beaten track. I looked down and saw that we were standing in a sea of little black and red jumping spiders. They were bouncing around like rubber bands. We knew that we must have killed some on the way in, so we just stood and watched for a little while before carefully making our way out. It was awesome.

P.S. There's lots of cool info about Salticidae at the Tree of Life site,  tolweb.org/Salticidae.

I smush the big ones, but I let the little ones live to kill other bugs.  Big spiders freak me out so bad, I'm scared to even hit them with a shoe because I imagine them crawling up my arm or something if I miss.
Title: Re: Spiders
Post by: placeholdername on March 09, 2010, 06:02:00 PM
Big spiders freak me out less than little ones.  A big one is easier to see and hence easier to catch --the smaller ones disappear when you try to catch them, and then you're stuck for hours thinking every slight itch on your body is that spider.

In general, if it doesn't fly it doesn't bother me so much.  I got stung in the ear by a bee at summer camp when I was a kid, so now if anything buzzes by my ears I freak out.  I just shivered thinking about that.

How to get out of a car when driving at 60km/hr. Have a very large Huntsman climb from under the sun visor and drop into your lap. Aaaah

In South Aus we have very nice and cute Redbacks, very poisonous, hide well and have a mean temper. There is a pic around of one killing a brown snake, charming.

But just to help your bowel habits, there was a report from Queensland yesterday of a guy who went to the loo for #2s and there was a 2.5 metre snake in the toilet bowl. Bet that cleaned him out

Not too fond of spiders, snakes, sharks, crocs; then why the hell do I live in Australia?

Well yeah, almost all spiders kill with poison of some sort, but very few of the spider poisons are potent enough to be in any way a threat to a human being.

True that, on both counts (I only found out the first part looking some stuff up the other day, that almost all spiders are poisonous) and the venom is made for things a bit smaller than us.  But people who are already sick, or the very young and the very old are at risk.  As is anyone who can't get real medical care, because the bites can get infected pretty bad.  However the greatest risk I guess is some sort of anaphylactic shock for the people who are allergic to the venom - roughly the same amount (though not necessarily the same people) as have that same kind of reaction to bee stings.

Once when I was about 16 I was at a friends house watching that movie Arachnophobia. Just as that dude was climbing up the ladder in the attic she took an eyeshadow brush and ran it along the back of my neck..... If you drive past her house you can still hear the echoes of my screams 19 years later!

kinda what I'm asking myself too  We have Redbacks in NSW as well and we found one the other day in the door sill. These are related I think to the American Black Widow, at least they look very similar. My friend put it in a plastic container and we took it to the place where they collect them to make anti-venom. I'm glad my friend was okay with it because no way I was getting near that thing! And I know the Huntsmans are supposed to be non-poisonous but for some reason my scream reflex hasn't figured that out yet lol :icon_yikes:

Title: Re: Spiders
Post by: tekla on March 10, 2010, 11:53:26 PM
Yes they are in the same family as the Black Widow, which makes them neurotoxic - the female also eats the male while mating.  Yikes!

Bites from Redback spiders produce a syndrome known as latrodectism. The symptoms are similar to bites from other Latrodectus spiders. The syndrome is generally characterised by extreme pain and severe sweating. Initially the bite may be painful but sometimes only feels like a pin prick or mild burning sensation. Within an hour victims generally develop more severe local pain with local sweating and sometimes piloerection (goosebumps). Pain, swelling and redness spread proximally from the site. Systemic envenoming is heralded by swollen or tender regional lymph nodes; associated features include malaise, nausea, vomiting, abdominal or chest pain, generalised sweating, headache, fever, hypertension and tremor.[13][14] Rare complications include seizure, coma, pulmonary edema, respiratory failure or localised skin infection.[17] Severe pain can persist for over 24 hours after being bitten.[18]

When I was up north, one of the Rangers said that as far as he was concerned water buffalo were as bad as anything. That night our dog decided to round on up and then race back to the caravan being chased by it(we where in Hoopty Doo bush camping, totally alone). Luckly it stopped otherwise wham bam thank you mam

Hi Cindy

Yes they are really deadly little creatures, however, I spent sometime with the locals and we dealt with the Werekoalas in the following manner.  As they dropped we stood to one side, punch the living daylights out of them, then split them from one end to the other, grabbed them by the back before they hit the ground and then slung them on the camp fire.  We soon had fricasseed Werekoalas for tea.

So next time you visit Hoopty Doo. Take me with you, I will protect you.

Having done a lot of construction work, I have been bitten many times by spiders-mostly brown recluses. While they will conservatively inject just a small amount of venom, if they are really afraid they will pour the stuff to you and it can and will make your flesh dissolve into a big hole. I also have been bitten by a Black Widow-ONCE and have seen many many more. They just love dark moist places that Plumbers have to go every day and you will learn to be careful or get bitten as I did. A large female got me on the right hand ring finger but I didn't think much of it at the time. When it swelled to the size of a softball and the vein up my arm turned blue I got worried and went for treatment. The Doctor said that if I had waited for three more hours I would have lost my right hand if not part of my arm! Be Careful!

Don't know it will work on your local spiders but we have found that most insects seem to hate sertain smells.

Our cat brings us his yearly dose of fleas and the next is due soon. Vacuming, of course, is essential, but spraying a weak solution of ceder, and pine onto our shoes stops the little blighters when we go into the back porch.

We also manage to scare away our yearly visit of mice. They have just arrived and left after dropping some peppermint oil in the places where they seem to like to go.

With some experimenting, you may find the smell your local spiders hate.

When I was living with my ex, a black widow managed to make its way into the house and find the perfect spot to hang out: the gap between the sliding closet doors in the master bedroom, about six inches from the ground. Right where one of the cats might encounter it. Nevertheless, I spent about a week and a half attempting to capture the beastie without hurting it. Don't ask me why; I saw what one of them did to my father when I was a kid. His hand and arm swelled up something awful.

Fast little suckers. Hard to catch. I finally succeeded, but what a headache. When I moved to my new house and saw a black widow out in the garden (again, right where my cat was likely to have a close encounter), I thought, "To hell with it" and executed it. Nature-lover, that's me.

But I really do like spiders, mostly.

When my dad went to Texas, he secretly brought back a black widow spider in a jar (for whatever reason) and brought it home. Well it laid an egg sac thing, and he punched a big hole in the top of the jar (it was a ball glass jar with a metal lid) with a hunting knife, which i thought was way too big of a hole, especially since the babies will prob be very little when born. Well, good thing I wasn't there when they hatched..

my dad said he got up at night, and was bringing the jar over to put some water in it or something, and when he went in the light he saw hundreds of little black widows crawling up his arm O-O he started smashing them all. it was kind of horrifying when i went over there a few days later, cause he was living in sort of a basement-type room and it was in a countryside-type town, and all i kept thinking was that one of the black widows would land on my head or crawl on me when i sleep. he said at one point one came down on a string  in front of him too.

I am terrified of spiders, if I see one in my room I can't sleep in there until it is found and either killed or taken outside. The only creepy crawler that bugs me out as much as spiders are centipedes.... :icon_dizzy:

House centipedes are terrible. I can handle spiders fine, but those little evil buggers are fast and have so many legs... I've killed them by drowning them in Windex before (it surprised me in the middle of the night in the bathroom). An awful way to die for an awful creature.

These are the ones I'm talking about; don't click if you're freaked out by bugs! (SO UGLY (http://blog.lib.umn.edu/whit1019/centipedes/House_centipede.jpg))

I don't know why I clicked but I did LOL... I hate those things.. the other night I was watching a show and they had those giant ugly centipedes you'd find in like hawaii or the amazon or wherever, freaky stuff!! I don't think I could deal if I saw one in person.. :o

eww i hate those! and they are super fast and like invisable. i saw one scurry under the couch i was on at my dads and was like 'did something just run across the floor?' and it was one of those. and i had to sleep on that couch, sick! hard to sleep after seeing that s.o.b. crawling around.

my bad luck bug lately has been random bees and black wasps IN MY ROOM or bathroom randomly. holy ->-bleeped-<-, that is a heart attack and a half right there o-o i dont even know where they come from...and why are they always in my room/bathroom? i smash them with something or drown them in comet and hairspray or something :P

Apparently, house centipedes can also detach legs if they're trapped by them. This idea bothers me deeply.

Speaking of bees, this fall I was walking on the sidewalk, talking animatedly to my friend, and I gestured to make a point. At that EXACT MOMENT a yellowjacket flew directly into my finger and stung the crap out it. And then I had to sit in class for an hour and a half with a throbbing finger.

ugh that sucks. fortunately i have only been stung like, twice in my life. i remember once i was running in a field to my dads truck and one flew out of this little shed and stung me and went back in the shed. my dad got out some bee poison (hes an exterminator 8) ) and killed the whole colony. haha thats what they get

I was driving to the bank to make a deposit... On the way a bee got sucked into the open window and stung me on my neck  :o

By the time I got home I'd swollen up like the Pillsburry Doughboy and could barely breathe

Lucky I lived at home at the time and my mom called the hospital

The cure was simple... Benadryl allergy formula

Odd way to find out I'd become allergic to bees  :P

Sorry to shatter another urban myth, but Vegemite is made from the by-product of beer brewing. THAT'S why it's good for you!!
I had to remove a huge Huntsman from the bedroom last night when I got home. I trapped it under a glass bowl and then slide a large piece of card under. Held that down hard to keep the rotten thing in, then released it in the flower bed. They are good guys although they look scary.
So far this summer I have killed about a dozen Red-Backs. They are endemic to northern Victoria, along with just about every other spider in creation.
The other one I don't mind is the Orb Weaver. They build huge "Charlotte's Web" type classic spider-webs across the pergola, which look beautiful with the dew on them in the morning. Just don't walk into their web as it is like wire rope!

I've been stung by yellowjackets three times, all in semi-odd locations on my body. Once I was crawling around in the back yard and got stung on the inside of my wrist. Then I was on horseback and reached into a tree for an apricot and got stung in the webbing between my index and middle finger. For my next trick, I was feeding somebody's chickens. I tossed some chicken feed on the ground; when I brought my arm back down, I got stung in the armpit by a wasp that had somehow found its way there. I was howling in pain, but the wasp flew merrily away--I hope, to die in some secret yellowjacket graveyard. >:(

Aw i think spiders are harmless, apart from the ones who're severely poisonous and can actually kill you if you get bitten lol.
But since were in england i think we've dodged that bullet.
I like them, i can honestly say they dont bother me.
Im usually the one who has to get rid of the if their in the house, but i dont have the heart to kill them so they go on a peice of paper and into the garden =]

I like spiders of the harmless sort also... They are actually helpful

But as prior mentioned we have the Hobo spider AKA The Aggressive House spider which is rather poisonous

On a good note... I became rather interested with spider recognition and learned that the Hobo spiders have spider enemies that will eat them and not harm anyone.... Muahahahaha  >:-)

I swear that I have arachnaphobia and if not, then a pretty severe fear of spiders.

I could not scroll down on the first page once I got a glimpse of the eyes of that horrid picture Janet posted. I cannot deal with spiders in a rational way. Teeny tiny baby spiders; Small spiders; Medium Spiders = Complete melt down. Whoever forbid I live somewhere or visit somewhere that has these giant spiders I hear about and have unfortunately seen pictures or video of. I think I would pass out from the panic attack I would have. I have enough of one with the aforementioned spiders.

My girl thinks it is absolutely ridiculous, but I cannot help it. I feel like so pathetic.  :embarrassed:

I don't mind spiders too much actually I've only ever been bitten by one once and that was because I panicked and kept trying to kill it. I've found if I just leave them alone they leave me alone so now the most I do is put them outside.

I used to be extremely scared of them when I was younger, but now I'm not that bothered. Then again I don't live anywhere that has large amounts of spiders.

I quite like spiders actually, then again I am a colossal nature ->-bleeped-<- and there isn't too many creatures that I can genuinely think of that actually make me shriek, squirm or generally have me running for the door if I just so happen to be near one.

Seriously, I make it some kind of mission to try and catch a spider if I just so happen to see one trundling along on their merry way with a piece of paper and a pint glass so I can get a better look at him.

Then I go all Steve Irwin and start chatting them up ._.

Flies irritate me though, so spiders are very much welcomed in this household~

I guess they want to prove that they are a pain in the something... Luckily I'm ready with some bite cream this year

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly -
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die

There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
What a hog! To swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat...
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a goat.
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog ...
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and wiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
But I dunno why she swallowed that fly
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.
I don't know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat...
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog...

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse -
She's dead, of course.
