Title: The what if and are you sure question
Post by: nmason on March 17, 2010, 10:56:17 PM
I'm getting close to my mandatory sessions as per "The Standards of Care" with my psychiatrist and it was the what if , are you sure  and we can do this if you don't session. I was totally unprepared for a session like that, I came out a wreck.
I am sure, my body and mind are telling me to do this. Some close friends are telling me to do this, but I don't think I convinced the psychiatrist.
I am wondering how other people got on with similar sessions.

I think your reading of the SOC might be a bit off from mine. I think I sort of understand what you're saying, but it has nothing to do with my therapy experience. Do you think you could explain in a bit more detail exactly what you're talking about?

My time frame is 6 sessions of psychological assessment within 3 months and then 1 session with another independent psychiatrist, then the results are tabled at a committee meeting that are involved with transition. Then if they all agree I can start their transitioning guidelines and program.

As per The Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's
Standards Of Care:
A period of psychotherapy of a duration specified by the mental health professional
after the initial evaluation (usually a minimum of three months). Then you qualify for HRT

Okay, but I think people are confused about what this means:

I certainly am. Can you clarify? You sound really stressed about it, and we all want to help.

I think he asked if I was sure if I want to transition mtf or get treatment to curb the urge to be female

If you're not sure what he asked, then I think you need to talk to him and get very clear about what is being discussed.

Thank you Valerie, Your comments have hit my question on the head. He is testing my resolve to see if I really want to transition and live as a woman or not. Am I going to do the right thing for me.
The session was a test to see if I am really committed and making sure I know what I'm doing.
He stated all the negative reasons to transition from community acceptance, family acceptance, risks of taking drugs to transition etc and he caught me off guard, therefore I felt I had a hard time.

At this stage Yes I want to transition despite all the risks. I will be happier looking female and living as one.
