er, Hi I'm Maeghan Shaundra AKA Bardic Fire
I'm an 18yo MTF and er, kinda new to all this >_<
I guess I'm not the usual in that I've only really had GID kinda feelings since puberty began, and I've only recently decided to actually do something about them instead of just hurting. I'm not really out, only my girlfriend and closest friends know about it, although I plan on telling my parents soon. I've never really acted on these feelings besides being generally kinda femme in attitude and occasionally crossdressing when my parents were out of the house.
I'm extremely fortunate to have a loving girlfriend who is being as supportive as can be despite her personal preferences to me identifying as male. She's being doing alot of research herself and may use this account occasionally.
outside of all that, I'm a Unitarian Universalist from the Joseph Priestly District, if theres any fellow UU's on here high five :P
I'm VERY PROUD to be a geek, both of Western Geek Culture (Comic Books, Video Games, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Role Playing Games, table top miniatures, etc. etc. etc. XD) AND Japanese Culture (I'm actually, as I demonstrated above, currently learning Japanese). theres a whole lot more to me of course but thats the basic essentials and it probably be easier to learn more by just getting to know me :P

yay! Someone else on the boards with an interest in Japanese! Right now I am working on Heisig's book "Remembering the Kanji" before I work more on the spoken language aspect, I want to be fully literate that way I can use books and audio to help me learn. (Modified tactic from AJATT http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/about (http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/about))
It isn't strange at all to start feeling those feelings later in life, not everyone is the stereotype of knowing since they were little children. I think you will find that you have alot in common with many people here. Welcome to the forums.

I'm self teaching because I'm homeschooled, and yes, most experts STRONGLY suggest that you learn the Kana first then begin studying the Kanji WHILE learning grammar and such. worse thing you can do to cripple yourself in Japanese is associate the Japanese sounds with Roman letters and not Japanese Symbology

This is a good place, with more diversity in the gender spectrum than any other place I have seen.

Maeghan, don't worry about fitting the "normal" stereotype for GID...actually is there a normal stereotype...i don't think so. We're all different and the important thing is that you're facing up to it.

Welcome BardicFire from a fellow Japanophile. While I have attempted to learn Japanese for the past 20+years (I have a horrible retention for languages) I have caught on quite nicely to Japanese culinary traditions. I have also been (trying to) learning to play the Japanese bamboo flute, called Shakuhachi, for most of these 20some years.
As has already been stated, discovering GID at puberty is not abnormal. I have felt wrong for nearly my whole life and have only just recently learned, at 48, that it is called GID and that there is something that can be done about it. So, like K8 said, pull up a keyboard and join in the fun.
