Title: Boy or Girl?
Post by: Maddie Secutura on April 13, 2010, 04:05:48 PM
I was working at Tekkoshocon, an anime convention in Pittsburgh, this weekend.  Now Pittsburgh's colors are black and gold so on Friday I threw on an old black men's button-down shirt (i did take the sides in though) and a yellow tie.  I had to be in the convention center by 8:30 that morning so my friends and I went to the Subway across the street for some breakfast.  I'll reference this little interaction later.  Anyway, with my new haircut, slightly loose shirt and a tie I imagine I looked pretty androgynous because twice that day I was asked "Are you a boy a girl?"  I wanted to respond "I was hoping you could tell me!" but I thought better of it since the question didn't bother me.  I told the first person "I'm a girl and don't worry, I get that all the time." Which was a lie but it made him feel better.  The second guy asked it in a unique way "I have to ask, are you a boy or a girl?  I think you're attractive but I'm worried you might have a vagina."  He was gay by the way.  I gave him the rundown saying that "I was a guy at one time but not anymore."

Anyway, the next day one of my friends who went to Subway with me Friday morning told me a story about how she went back in later.  The one guy in there had a sad and confused look on his face when he recognized her because he asked her "Your friend who came in with you earlier, was that a guy or a girl?" She answered "She's a girl."  His co-workers proceed to tell him "I told you!" and turned to my friend to say "She's hot...yeah she's hot!"

It wasn't the reaction I was expecting but I think I can understand why they would think that.  When I first saw the "Oh Yeah" music video by The Cliks, I thought Lucas Silveira (whom I thought was a girl in the video) looked really sexy in the shirt and tie.  I suppose this, despite being far from ideal, is not a bad thing for FtM's in the sense that even though you may be read as female, it is still considered positive unlike MtF's getting read while wearing women's clothes (unless you happen to be a cisgendered rock star or Eddie Izzard).

Sound like you have a couple of potential BFs at Subway.  ;D

A total awesome day at Tekkoshocon.

I went through my college years like that, with some people unsure of which I was - I tried to be androgynous. Most assumed I was a girl, which was fine with me, though it was odd for 1969  ;)

All the way through high school I got this. My school shirt was baggy so people couldnt tell that I had breasts so lots of people came up and asked. Problem was half these people were d**kheads and laughed at me and pulled me funny looks for the rest of my school life. Now I'm a little older people are more respectful and accepting about that sort of thing.
