Caster Semenya's rights being 'swept under the carpet', says sports scientist Tim Noakes

An eminent sports scientist has accused the International Association of Athletics Federations of being more concerned with brushing the issue of gender under the carpet than protecting the rights of athletes such as Caster Semenya.

Semenya, the world 800 metres world champion, is still waiting for the results of her gender verification test that will determine whether she will be allowed to continue competing in women's races.

But Tim Noakes, professor of sports science and exercise at the University of Cape Town, said the IAAF was more interested in the image of the sport than Semenya's welfare.

JOHANNESBURG -- Eight female athletes with doubts over their gender have been secretly banned by the Olympic and athletics' governing bodies to protect the sport's image, a leading sports scientist has told Reuters.

South African Tim Noakes said in an interview that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had been more concerned about brushing the issue under the carpet than worried about the athletes' competitive physical advantages.
