Title: FTM on the Jeremy Kyle show
Post by: MRH on May 20, 2010, 11:09:32 AM
A few months back I had the TV on in the background when Jeremy Kyle came on. Now I was expecting the usual stories but I was suprised to find that there was an FTM on the show. I found it very interesting so I found it again on youtube for anyone who is interested.

This is part one, the other parts should be in the related section

Teehee I saw this on the TV too, I remember being drawn to it purely because its transsexuality ;D I thought it was quite good, Jeremy Kyle didn''t make fun of him or transsexuality in general. JK is understanding of LGBT people ;D

Tho, If i recall, the show the FtM appeared on didn't turn out so well.. He doesn't go out to socialise with other transsexuals or anything :( Going out and about, socialising and stuff is important and healthy I think ;D

It wasn't the worst talk show I've seen on it, but it kind of irked me how one sided it got.

I have to confess, I have never before watched any episodes of Jeremy Kyle.

I have to say that, all in all, this was a pretty good performance. He seemed to be quite fair about it really.

I hate it how the title is "How to stop my daughter from becoming a man". It should be more like "How to stop my dad from making me a girl".

Yeah, when I showed this to a friend via Youtube, she was like 'the title of this depresses me somewhat'. Its not really as understanding as it should be. :(

Did you think that maybe he is scared to be around others because he is afraid of being persecuted for who he is? Or perhaps he doesn't know any other transgendered people or is afraid to find them.

I'm the same way; I only know transgendered people online. I would love to socialize with others like myself but I live in a very conservative rural area of my state and I can't just go out saying 'Hey I'm trans! Is anyone else the same? Let's talk!'

I also hate these type of shows and how they sensationalize everything. I'm just watching this because it's not often an FtM or even a trans person is on tv to tell people that they aren't weird for how they feel.

The way the Host of the show questions Ben makes me feel like when my ex would talk to me about my issues. :-\

Each time they refer to Ben as "she", "her" or "daughter" I get a very real feeling like a quick jolt of pain and sadness. It's also so upsetting that some silly little words have gained enough power to make people uncomfortable just hearing them.

I agree with Phate.

I also want to say that I really don't see the point of doing the show like this. The exact same thing could be done without having to go on TV. I think all it's really done is make Ben's experience worse... how would you feel going on TV and having almost everyone there agree with your father who refuses to be cooperative?

I understand the importance to show how the parents feel, but there's simply nothing of value in this. No one's really learning anything and it's all pretty much one sided. If they're going to sit around and do a show about the feelings instead of what's right and wrong, then why do they ignore Ben's? And it's strange to me that Jeremy suddenly stops using male pronouns with Ben at one point, and then makes it a point to use Rebecca and 'she' and 'her' after.

I guess I shouldn't have expected more from a show like this, but the more I think about what I watched, the more it bothers me. I'm all for showing the reality of things, but this does absolutely nothing.

In defense of kyle, he has to present his program and the topics in manner that is acceptable to the sort of people who might complain.

Under those circumstances he was surprisingly supportive as were a number of the audience.

The perspective was the father's. It might have been difficult otherwise.

But what he achieved was to air the subject to an audience who might otherwise only know about the subject from the silly rhetoric of the tabloids.

In addition, he featured a bioligical female which may be a new take on the issue for many.

That's never really stopped other talk shows from showing both sides of the matter respectively. Like I said, it's not the worst I've seen on it, but it wasn't very helpful toward anything either. The audience might have been supportive, but everything was riddled with misconceptions and ignorance about the subject.

The closest thing we got to someone talking from the other side other than Ben was the MTF, but I don't think even she was a very good communicator. She ended up blundering some things as well. I'm really surprised they didn't have Ben's girlfriend talk, everything was just focused on the dad and occasionally the mother.

It was a wasted opportunity. I don't think it impacted anything negatively, but I don't think it impacted anything positively either.
