LOL so I was reading the checklist to get for home used after SRS and two topics that caught my attention was..

15 tubes of KY gelly
1 pack of sanitary pads (maxi pads)

How many of post op people actually got all 15 tubes one shot, and how many preop going for surgery got the 15 tubes lol?? I would be embarrased in getting all 15.

However, one thing that is my kryptonite is maxi pads. I tried to shop for them i believed was yesterday and I bailed from the isle as a woman approached the isle..

I went through my entire transition from going shopping as a young guy kid for womens clothes and trying them on.. to the complete transition and being very social and not being afraid but maxi pads scare the heck out of me!!

I don't blame you. Those things are scary  :o lol

I would like to go in and buy that many tubes of KY. I would smile and say "they help me get into my jeans.....";)

Yea well I feel I will be able to make a joke out of it, but im so scared getting pads :( I don't know what's about them that make me nervous!

Perhaps you need to build up to it, start with barely there panty liners and go from there....

Being seen socially as a guy, that area was always taboo. It is hard to get over that sort of conditioning.

I don't need to buy any, but I like looking at all the colorful packaging and reading the labels, it will get easier... just take that first step.

Although im  beyond female presentable, it's the fact that it always made me nervous to get them.. I have to go one day before work, super early in the morning.. (being in that isle is what makes me nervous) weither or not its panty liners or pads or tampons!

lol I know i could buy them online but ill get them in the store ill just be embarrassed a lil, i used to get them for my ex too, and I was not fully transitioned and i didnt care them but... ya... anyhow Ill get them early in the morning like I said.

I did a video shoot once where they needed 5lbs of KY and fifty feet of surgical tubing (they needed a lot of stuff, that's just what they forgot so they sent me out to get it).  The woman chosen (condemned) to drive me kept on pleading with me not to embarrass her.  So I went through the store, filling up one of those basket deals with KY and surgical tubing and I was all nice and polite and I didn't embarrass her at all and everything went well right up until the checker was finished packing the bags and I look at her and ask "So, are there any pet stores nearby?"

That is one of the advantages of having been married.  Pads no longer scare me.  15 tubes of KY would be a stretch.

my instructions say to use baby oil or mineral oil gel instead of K-Y because K-Y leaves behind "gummy deposits", whatever that means. ???  In any case buying a gallon of baby oil is probably just as bad lol

Being married pretty much got me over worrying about buying pads, too. But I think it will be interesting buying them for myself this time... :)

I have.  No big deal.  Does help in the passing department for all those newbies.

mineral oil comes in 1 quart bottles and has uses other than that lube

yes I can think of at least one other good use for it lol

When I was at walmart in the lube isle they had boxes and boxes full of it.

Well almost 15, I got a case of 12 (plus 1 add'l) before surgery and I'm glad I did.  I used it probably within the first 1-2 months and was glad I went through the legwork before surgery.  As for the maxi-pads, I only needed them right after surgery, but pantyliners were a better choice for when I arrived home.  It's weird, I also had some anxiety in the feminine hygiene procurement.  Of course it's all in the mind, it's really no biggie. 

Surgilube is my lube of choice, available for about $3/tube on the Internet and at your local medical supply store.  Better than KY, imho.

       

I will definitely shop for all that I need.

I seen these colorful maxipads I wanna get, (color wrappers are like green/blue/pink) etc.. Everything they want me to bring to Montreal seems like I need a huge suitcase.. this will be horrid on my trip back! They better not loose my luggage or I will be seriously pissed.

I laughed pretty good when I read this.   When I was still in Thailand, I had ran through my maxi pad supply, (and using quite a bit each day!), and went to the local grocery store.   Hell, I was post op, but I timidly approached the feminine products aisle, never having been in one before.  Another woman came into the aisle, and I bolted!!!   I have no idea why.  Subsequent trips are much more comfortable, lol.   They better be, I buy the 48 packs when they're on sale, and I go through them in about 3 weeks.

For the lube, you may looksee to see if you have a medical supply house in your city.   I goto one here in Toronto, and buy medical grade lubricating jelly for $2.40 CA$ for each 5 oz tube.  So much cheaper then the stuff you buy at the drug store or walmart.   I buy them in 10-pack boxes.   I'm just finishing box #3.  Yes, that's some serious amount of lube ;)

Very strange... I have bought pads all my life. Ok they aren't usually maxi  more like the ultra slim ones but I have bought them.

Due to a minor congenital problem I have needed them from time to time too, even before mt original SRS, although that has now thankfully stopped at last since my revision surgery.

The KY would have seriously freaked me though!

I also have to buy pads for a medical reason, never had a problem, I don't think the check out people even take any notice of what they scan.

The lube is a lot cheaper in bulk at a medical supply house (the kind of place that rents wheelchairs).  I get a case (12 tubes) of Surgilube at a time.

Having been married, picking up the maxi-pads and panty-liners were no problem for me.  But buying underpads - the disposable pads to protect your bed or chairs or whatever - gave me pause.  But then my daughter told me that she had gone through a mess of them when she was housetraining her dog.

Most clerks could care less what you are buying.  (Unless of course it is 5# of KY. ;)  How many tubes is that?)

I've had to buy pads and tampons for over 10 years, and still can't stand that aisle.  Especially on days when I'm kind of passing.  It is kind of funny to be called sir while waiting in line, and then go up to the counter with tampons, liners, midol and chocolate.  Its even better when there's some men's deodorant or razors in the mix.   Some times getting "wft?" looks is fun.

The trick is to get the same kind everytime, so you can find the package quickly. Grab it quickly while walking past, then when you freak out and run, Pads are already in hand!  Just don't try to hide them while you finish shopping. Security doesn't like that.

I prefer using Surgilube. My doc also recommended mineral oil, but she did not have a problem when I told her I was using Surgilube. It's not nearly as messy as mineral oil. I buy it in bulk online. Usually 60 or so tubes at a time.

You can buy puppy training pads at a pet shop also. They are the same thing.

Ha!  I grinned at this thread.  What a great experience buying all of that stuff.  I have bought feminine products for years.  Yep, the being married thing pretty much gets rid of any embarrassment in that area.  Then try having a daughter.  When I buy them for me I think it is kinda fun.  Always check out with a guy checker.  Watch their reaction.  They will not even look at you and will place them in the bag like they are radioactive.  I am surprised they don't use tongs.  OK, I guess I am sadistic.  As for the K-Y, if you really wanna be cruel, you could wait till you are finished then wink and ask him if he is busy next Saturday.

for initial healing it needs to be water based (vaginal environment reason, and easier cleanup) and bacteriostatic.

Well in regards to lubricant the one I use for all purposes (except special occasions) is called "wetstuff" and I have used this for pretty much for 19 years.  I just purchase a pump bottle around 500ml and it is near my bed and of course it is hidden when guests come.

Now days I just  use long liners after a dilation period or when I have spent time with my other half.  But then again I have always had these products on hand, because I learnt a long time ago when other girls were around one was asked on a regular basis, do you have some?

Yeah i actually went out and bought some pads got over th3 fear :P although it was a young man at the cash and he just bagged it without second thinking anything. He wasn't scared of them nor trying to hurry to throw them in.

In theory I assume it's like getting diapers for a baby, i mean the packaging sorta resembles it. (They do have a funky weird plastic/token powder smell (I can't put my finger on it)

That's actually a cool pad, but being cotton severely like that compare to regular cotton pads would probably make you sweat like 10.

I never used 15 tubes. I also went to a medical supply store and got a couple few of the medical lubes -- way cheaper than KY and is the same that they give you in Montreal. After things are healed, you can also use other lubes if you want (water based). I have some O'My that was on sale and it's lasted me for a long time (then again, I'm post op 2 years in a couple weeks).

I wonder where our difference is...  I literally still put on a latex glove and slough the lube onto the dilator, at 4 months post op.  If I use any less then a "slough", it doesn't seem to be enough.  I've used over 25 5oz tubes of lube, and counting.  Perhaps one factor is that I may use up to 3 different dilators in a session?  (each one requiring a 'slough' of lube!  ;D )

The three dilators probably use up a lot of gel.  At five weeks I've used only six 2 oz tubes of Surgilube (bought a case of 12).  I only use one dilator a session except when I was stepping up from one size to the next – kind of sneaking up on the next larger size.

With the larger dilator I've found I need more gel than with the skinny ones.  If it binds a little as I'm inserting it, I back it out a little (half inch or inch?), give it a little wiggle, and then try again.  That works pretty well.

Also, the nurse said to try gently rotating the dilator 360º once it's in there all the way.  I do that slowly.  It spreads the gel around and feels like it loosens things up a bit.  Before I did that I would have trouble pulling the stupid thing out because the tip was quite dry.  Now I can just give it a wiggle and it eases out.

But we're all a bit different – in our approaches and in what seems to work for us.

Let's see...  If you sleep 8 hours a night, and each dilation takes at least a half hour (setup, dilation, cleanup - more if you are using more than one dilator a session), that works out to dilating every 2 hours and 40 minutes.  Really?  Is that possible (or necessary)?

This from my discharge instructions from Dr. McGinn... I also have a "manual" that goes into more specific detail about the procedure.

Actually the manual says 3 times a day for weeks 9-24, so that's still almost 6 months. It goes on to say:

I plan to meet with DR. McGinn again at least once prior to surgery so I'm sure I'll be having questions about this once I get there, but she seems pretty strict with her instructions and I completely trust her professional judgment. The fact she is so very thorough is one of the things that impressed me and one of the reasons I chose her in the first place, so I'm sure I'll be doing whatever she suggests to optimize healing and good results (even if it is a pain in the... uh, kitty lol).

No in the UK you can get anything on prescription with a maximum charge of just under £10. (and if you were on benefits then that would be waived also). So if you require a large quantity, even something cheap like lube can be cheaper to get that way.

I called my doctor about this, and he wouldnt write a prescription for that regardless, but I did get my 3 cases but I still will be able to write it off my taxes 2010 end of year. So regardless, I just have to keep my receipts in order.

The pads I get are called disposable underpads.  In K-Mart they are with the adult diapers.

Thanks for the tip about the towels, Valerie.  In the beginning I would make quite a mess, but now I stain the pad just enough not to keep it but too little to feel like I have to throw it out.  (I throw it out anyway while feeling guilty about adding it to the landfill.)  Maybe I'll be able to re-use the pads a little if I also use a paper towl.

Hope it goes well for you and heal quickly. You will be well acquainted with dilation by the time I have my GRS.

YMMV.  I used a case - 12 tubes, 2 oz each - the first month.

about 9" long counting space around it, I got a 2 pack of rubbermaid "takealongs" for about $6 iirc (overkill size wise, but cheap)

If you look on your papers you would see the size. 26cm long, 15cm wide, 8cm deep :)

I've only ever dilated three times a day and only use one dilator per session except when I was transitioning to the next larger size.  (I'd use the one I was used to, to relax everything, and then slide the next bigger one in so the parts would start getting used to it.  The transitions took 4 or 5 days.)

Simplicity at its best.

Towels of an appropriate size will prevent any staining while dilating.   When you have finished the towels can be washed separately and hence can then be used repeatedly.  If you wish you can soak them in an appropriate solution then wash.

Yes K8, there is nothing wrong with what you are doing, what you described is basically what I did when cleaning my dilator before and after dilation.  The things I used were simple and basic, towels, soap, washing detergent, wet stuff (500g water based lubricant) in a pump bottle and that was it.

What is being done now or described is simply overkill in my opinion .  I just used simple basic hygiene methods after I had my surgery, washed my hands and equipment before and after dilation.

whats overkill about it, most of the stuff mentioned is written on my papers, I like to follow what the Dr. recommends.

Except he did ask for only 15 tubes of lube but I bought over $50 since there was a bulk deal! It doesn't hurt to have extras

I got the 50 gallon drum with the motorized pump.  It was a steal!

I threw a table cloth over it and it makes a fine bed side table as well!

Good Girl!  Fear not The Pad!   :laugh:  I've been buying them for years as they helped with the appearance while tucking.  Glad that's soon to be over!   ;D

the maxi thins or ultra thins are best. You won't need big bulky pads unless you have a lot of discharge. They're all made to wick the moisture away from you. Get a few, you'll probably want to change them at least after every dilation. Since I have to do it 5 times a day I'm buying the Always Ultra Thins in the large economy size packs lol

Don't worry ladies, I never liked it either. I usually got someone else to do it or 'borrowed' from others closets.

Cute Sara lol. I bought some tampons the other day to keep a couple in my purse in case a gf ever needed one lol. Makes it easy to not have to explain why I don't have them.

I'm going to check out the online site's some girls mentioned in this forum, and check out a few medical supply stores for lube, douching products panty liners & always pads etc as well as Shoppers drug mart for the bed pads. I'll probably need 2-3 boxes too. Better to be too prepared. Besides, it'll get used =)
