Title: What Gender is Your Name?
Post by: Crow on June 03, 2010, 06:22:26 PM
Hopefully those options are inclusive enough. If I left something out, I apologize in advance! (By the way, this is going by gender identity, in case there was any question there. No matter where you are in your transition or whether you're trans or cis, select what you identify as.)

I'm curious about you guys' name situations. We have lots of "how did you pick you name" type boards and I thought it would be interesting to do a poll to quantify some name statistics. (Also, I wonder if there's anyone else whose preferred name doesn't actually match their gender identity or if I'm really the oddball out.)

Feel free to post to elaborate on your answer. 83

As for me: I'm genderqueer/an androgyne/planning on transitioning partway from female to male, and I have a female name (Diane). It's a chosen name, oddly enough, but it's one I chose before the gender thing came up. I'm just too stubborn to let go of it in favor of a name that "fits" according to society's standards, because I'm really quite attached to my name.

I'm a man of many names - I'll respond to pretty much whatever you decide to call me as long as you warn me first - but my chosen name is a fairly standard male name of Celtic extraction.

That being said, I still answer to my given first name (female, unisex in some places), my given middle name (extremely female), my previous chosen name (unisex), my childhood chosen name (male), my last name (unisex), my primary and secondary online pseudonyms (one male, one ambiguously female), and any of the several main character names in the several online games I've played (ambiguously male).

Androgyne with a male name, a male name I'm not even that keen on - very bland - but it's my name and we've come too far to split.

Well, I identify as male and my preferred name is male.

But I was born in a female body and given a female name. Exciting, no?

My biological name is Micale (Muh-Kuh-L) and is unisex but depending on who says it can change that for example in Germany my name would typically be sounded out as (Mike-L) despite being unisex here in the U.S.

My middle name is Yubel (My current Susan's name) and is sounded out as (You-Vell) and it's origins are in Japan and it means jewel. Here in the U.S. it would be sounded out as (You-Bell) and my last name is Mishler which you can sound out for yourself but means last descendant of Michael.

So overall I have a unisex first name, feminine middle and I don't know about last...So I would be a woman with a unisex name! ^_^"

Man with unisex name.
Kind of.
The short form is unisex, and is what i mostly go by, while the long version is male.

Man with a unisex name. The name I was given at birth is Shawn, and it is masculine enough where I don't feel the need to change my name. Although my middle name is Lorraine, which SERIOUSLY needs a changing.

Well...male with female name.

However, I'll answer to:

Sarah (given name)
Shang (nickname)
Gabriel (chosen name)
Gabe (nickname of the chosen name)
Nii-chan (only one person calls me this)
Hey, you!
Oi!
Pooky-poo (my mom -.-)
Snooky bottoms (my mom -.-)

So...I'll pretty much answer to just about anything and everything, as long as it's not derogatory.

Ann is my birth middle name still very much an females name. As for my last I have no earthly idea if it's unisexed male or female heh. I haven't chose an new middle name for myself. But I prefer being called Raven but only my family can call me Connie as they don't yet know of my situation heh. But sometimes I kinda like the name Donnie heh idk I'm weird.

Androgyne with very very female name. I'm actually tolerant of the name. I don't think I would ever change it, but it does feel odd answering to it. It's like answering the phone for someone else.

Male with female legal name, however I've ALWAYS hated my given name.

Given Name: Heather (I haven't answered to that name since I was 16)

Assumed name from 16 til recent: Victoria (I ended up picking a name that could be converted to male, without even realizing I had done so at the time of picking it out)

Chosen name of recent time: Victor (Just used the male version of Victoria, easier that way and can still answer to Vic without any raised eyebrows)

Nicknames: Red (On account of my normally bright red dyed hair) Amazon (Falling out of use now that I'm transitioning, was due to my height) Wildfire (Nickname a friend gave me due to my temper, I kinda grew fond of it) Crazy Redheaded B------ (OK, I mighta, kinda, sorta earned that one due to the crazy stunts I've been known to pull >_>)

My assumed and chosen names are for a reason however, I picked them because they hold meaning to me, a sign that I survived, that I was 'victorious' over the challenges I have met with in my life, the name, in both the male and female form, how a lot of meaning to me due to that, thus why I'm using Victor as my legal, male name when I get to that point of transition.

Female with a unisex name is what I picked.  It was very common when I was born and that was extremely good luck on my part in picking it.  It is more common as a female name in my travels and I have not come across any males with my name.  Where I work there are three other females with the same name.

Kind regards
Sarah B

My name's August, which is either male or unisex depending on where you are and if you're even aware it's a name. I've only ever met guys with the name and I generally get stuff addressed to "Mr." (legally I'm still F) but people who've thought I was a girl found it totally normal. (I did change my name, but it was years before I started transition and wasn't really about that.)

I'm female, with a feminine "preferred" name.  My given name, at least in nickname form, is unisex, but the name I chose was what my parents would've called me if I was born biologically female.

Woman with a female name, both my birth name and chosen name. However I still respond to my previous, male, chosen name that I had while I thought I was a man during my transition, cause it was during such a long time (9 years) that most people who know me got very used to it. I'm fine with people calling me by it. I don't feel any dysphoria towards my previous male name, but I don't think it fits me now that I see myself as a woman, and I think it's a very dull and boring name. I've never had a nickname.

I'm afab, transitioned to male and now partially detransitioning to nb/androgynous, basically. But I consider myself a woman because I'm fine with being afab, although I'm also still fine with most of my transition.

I've actually been considering possibly taking back my birth name at some point. I've hated it my entire life, at least since I was around 4 years old, but since very recently I've been starting to become fine with it, and feel some positive emotional connection to it. I haven't been called by that name for a long time, and I kinda miss it? I still dunno yet though, it would be a huge thing for me if I'd ever actually want it back. Also I really like my current chosen name, and don't particularly want to ditch it.

My birth name: Sara.
The male name I previously went by: John.
Current chosen name: Laura.

I have two female names that were given to me at birth. Won't write my first name here. They are both pretty uncommon names in Sweden. My second name is Pauliina. It's a Finnish spelling of Pauline.

My chosen name is Pierre but I have not legally changed it yet.

I answer to both my given first name and chosen name.

I picked the name Tony in 2009 when I finally got the last bit of the puzzle. This is my online name.

Tony with this spelling is masculine. Pierre...I guess masculine. Never heared of a girl with that name.

My birth name was unambiguously male.  I chose a new name that was unambiguously female.  I definitely wanted to avoid having an androgynous name.

My birth name and my now legal female name are very close to each other.  My initials stayed the same as did everything which has an abbreviated first name with my last name.

My birth name was Dietmar, and my new legal name is Dietlind (both are very ancient Germanic/Nordic names, and mean close to the same if translated)

Title: Re: What Gender is Your Name?
Post by: Kylo on May 07, 2019, 04:05:29 PM
I had a unisex name before, but I've decided to change it to another name that contains unisex and masculine names for use in various situations, a name with two middle names, should I decide to start using them informally in various situations. Unless it's an official situation where papers need to be presented I can use any one of these three as the offered or preferred name.

My reasoning behind this is that there are some people from the past whom I would very much rather never recognize me as who I "was", since they may well still be malevolent. Hence a change of official first name. Then the androgynous original name is in the middle if I want to use that with relatives, an undoubtedly and common masculine name is in there to use, and another different unisex name is in there to be used in case a situation calls for it.

My initials would now be: V. V. A. L. or V. L. for shorthand use.

I took a pragmatic approach and tried to cover all the bases and potential needs.

I was AMAB and given a recognizably male name I never liked, so I picked out a recognizably female name going into transition.  My goal was to blend into the herd, so I didn't want a name that would be startling or unusual for a woman of my age.

Math nerd that I am, I enlisted the help of statistics.  I looked up the most common names given to girls in my birth year.  (Thank you, Social Security Administration!)

I wanted to avoid being caught in the stampede of Jennifers and Nicoles and Ashleys from that year, so I bypassed the names at the top end of the list and picked out "April" at number 47.

1.  Recognizably female.

2.  Same initial letter as my given name, so I retain the same initials.

3.  Bonus: "April" suggests springtime, a time of a new beginning.  I was optimistic about transition.  And I was NOT disappointed!

At birth I was given the name "Andrew" (English form of the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas), which was derived from ανδρειος (andreios) "manly, masculine") by my well-intentioned but clueless parents.

Boy!  Were they ever WRONG!

I chose Jamie because it was unisex and I was questioning, but I liked it as a male name and so on while growing up, it seemed like the perfect male name to me. Then I realized that I was a binary trans man and I moved to Portugal where I use Jaime (different pronunciation) and it's strictly male and I'll use that spelling once I get to change my name :)
