Title: Sexual orientation of therapist
Post by: blackMamba on July 02, 2010, 06:30:27 PM
I've had several therapists during the course of my life.  And a common theme has presented itself: most of my therapists have been lesbians.  And I've talked with other trans friends of mine and many of them report the same thing.

I realize many of you have had several shrinks in your life, but I'm specifically polling about your gender therapist.  If you've had several, pick the one you spent the most time with or the one you liked the best; your choice.

Also, if your therapist is/was trans, please comment.  I had considered separating it out between cis/trans, but that would make for too many options.

Thanks!

My therapist is actual FtM and in a relationship with a woman.  I don't know if they are married or not, and I don't care.  He is a great therapist.

Mine's gay as a picnic basket, lol. A great therapist/man in his own right. When I was originally looking the most important thing to me was that the therapist have a good grasp on trans issues, which he does. Though, looking back, it has been helpful to have a gender identity and sexual orientation in common...

I know my therapist is divorced. Her relationship status and history doesn't really matter to me, and I feel like it's none of my business.

Thank you for everyone who has participated so far.  I think it's interesting, and supportive of my hypothesis.  The majority of therapists are LGBT.

Although this sample size is small, at this point 16 minus 3 (don't know/don't care) = 13, LGBT therapists are coming in at around 62%, with lesbians making up about 38%.  I wonder if there is also a disproportionate number of non-gender therapists?

Psychoanalyzing the psychoanalysts, now there's a concept.

My primary gender therapist was hetero female, but my secondary one and both of my other therapists were lesbians.
