For most Americans, the response is automatic: When confronted with a medical emergency, seek treatment at the nearest hospital. But far too often, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face unnecessary obstacles that prevent equal access to care.
When a transgender woman arrived at Ball Memorial Hospital's emergency room in Muncie on July 18, she was allegedly told that members of the hospital staff "don't know how to go about treating someone with your condition."

They weren't referring to her suspected lung infection.
