Recently I made a friend online from a MMORPG game. She is a very shy (I know I'm not the one to talk) MTF who is already undergoing online therapy. She never practiced developing a female voice because she was convinced that she already had one. Recently though she somehow came to the conclusion that she sounds positively male and wonders if she will ever pass. I'm surprised at her sudden pessimistic outlook. Personally as someone with a naturally female voice all my life I think my friend sounds just fine, but maybe I'm biased because she is a friend.

Sounds 100% female to me!

It sounds female, but can she keep it up? Does it ever slip?

A voice that takes a lot of work to get to and is difficult to maintain will be quite hard to use in real life situations.

Online voice applications (ventrillo, skype, team speak, etc...) are actually pretty good for practice. Since your friend has you, she can use you as a sounding board and get comfortable speaking.

Well she doesn't have to try to maintain it from what I noticed. Actually I don't see much of a difference between her male voice and this except some words sounding softer. She's been talking with me for a while now, I never seemed to have caught a slip. Even if she did, it didn't sound any different from her female voice. :)

The voice is female. But she really needs to get more practice. I say this because there is such hesitation in her voice. Also, it seems to lack some of the forcefullness of a grown woman, or even a teenager.

Can she make a load of friends on the telephone? I really think it's a matter of more practice. But the sound itself is fine.

She sounds female and her inflections are good but she's squeezing it too much out of insecurity of sounding male thus she's actually "gone too far" and sounds like a little girl. She needs to learn to loosen up abit and make her voice more personalized to her. :)

She sounds female, and cute, and quite young, and shy, and quite a lot like me when I slip into "cute little girl" defensive mode. All of which is fine as long as it matches her appearance and demeanor in-person. The last thing I'd do, given how shy and hesitant she sounds, is criticize her; shy people almost never benefit from being told they "need" to loosen up and gain more confidence.

What holds her back the most, I'd think, is the insecurity over her voice.

It's a cute voice, definitely female sounding, pattern and all. I'd just suggest using it more.
The more you talk the more comfortable you get talking, and then that insecurity will fade.

She looks childish for a 27 year old. I'm pretty childish too, but I'm 21 so I'm entitled to be all that ^-^'

She said I could post her picture for a little while, she wants to actually develop her voice nowadays... but essentially that's what she sounds like. Would the voice profile suit her? Note that in the picture below she isn't trying to be female at all. She hasn't come out to anyone but me according to her. If anything she's trying her best to be a regular guy.

She definitely sounds like she has an accent. Am I right in assuming that English isn't her natural language?

I can't really tell that it's coming from a boy at all. The inflections and phrasing's okay, but she sounds Asian. I'm with the others that are asking if she's able to keep this manner of speaking for prolonged periods.

A few tips: A feminine voice isn't primarily pitch. It's all about resonance (shifting it from the chest to the head) and intonation, which is all about choice of words and phrasing.

Yes English isn't her first language, and she is indeed in asia. How can she loose the ascent I wonder? listening to that again I also noticed some of her words being rushed and not well phased.

No matter whether or not one is a transsexual, they will have a problem with accent while speaking a foreign language.

As for her voice, here's what I think : she doesn't need any more work on "sounding female". What she needs, though, is learning to sound more natural ; she sounds like she's forcing herself a bit.

When I listened to it the first thing that I picked up was she sound like a very young girl.  And I do hear what I will call an Asian accent.

And now that we can see how she looks the voice fits her.  If this is how her every day voice sounds, she will have no problems at all.

She sounds like a young girl, she looks like a young girl...she's fine :) and pretty darn cute too.

English is best when spoken with an accent.

The great thing about English is that it really doesn't matter how you say anything as long as you're understood. I heard a program today where they were talking about pronounciation. Different people insisting their's was correct.

Yet all were pretty easy to understand.
