Title: I finally get to start HRT!!
Post by: Epigania on October 28, 2010, 03:44:26 PM
I'm in a bit of a daze.   Almost euphoric, actually.   It's hard to explain.

My Therapist has been awesome and my new doctor is just as awesome.  She sat down and spent, believe it or not, an hour talking and getting to know me before we even started to discuss Hormones, their risks, and my concerns about the health risks.   She was amazing, really.

She gave me scripts for Spiro, Estadiol Patches, and Finesteride.

As I took my first doses I suddenly felt like perhaps I have a future.   Prior to that point, I felt like I was forever stuck in limbo and unable to move forward.  Does that make sense?

As a side note, the Spiro pills are MUCH larger than I thought they would be.  They're like horse pills!

Yeah I remember when I was taking them, they were huge.  Not the biggest I have ever taken but close.  ;D

Congratz on the HRT.  :icon_bunch:

YAY!
Ya, the spiro are rather large. They are probably the nastiest tasting pill ever. I have to split mine and sometimes the rough cut side hits my tounge...ewwwww nasty stuff

Don't you love when the doc wants to get to know you and seems to really care? I loved that about my HRT doc.

Not only are they huge, they taste like they were made from a ground up horse. Yuck! Chalky and not pleasant tasting at all.

Oddly, the spiro had a mint smell and taste to me.

Any suggestions on the best places for the patches?

I like my doctors so far.  I feel anxious for the physical effects to start, but I know I have to be patient.  I already feel more emotionally ... even ... so to speak.

Sadly you won't *see* the effects easily...It won't be until you compare a picture pre-HRT versus say, 5 months into HRT when you'll really see the difference.

I'd say really bad stale altoids more than horse...

The immediate psychological effect of going on hormones is/was pretty awesome. Its like your first mile stone on road of transition.

Good luck and congratuations.

The patches... I recommend either your butt or your calves, where they won't get exposed "Wtf does that person have there". Inner calves could be better, since you don't sit on there (well, not as much), so it won't rub/stick to your pants/etc. But might be a hassle when going to the bathroom too... Maybe... Upper back ?

I was told to place the patches (when I ussed them) on my abdomen below the belly buton and above the belt line. Each time you change the patch put it on the other side than the last one was on.

Weird.  Maybe I have a different generic, but mine are a little minty.

Congrats on starting your HRT Epigania  ;D

My spiros were rather small, smaller than an aspirin... But they did have that chalky mint taste to them... Luckily they dissolved under my tongue rather quickly so I didn't have to taste them for very long

My spiro smells like mint too.

Usually for the patches I bend over to see where where the folds are in my belly, patches seem to stay  better where they don't get bent over. You can put them on your butt too but I find they tend to come off there though. Sometimes I put them on my hip.

Spiro seems to come in two sizes, the smaller is a quarter dose of the bigger ones.
