Max Wolf Valerio, author of the testosterone files, still has his hair. You might want to check it out.

Does T really make you lose your hair?

If baldness is in your genes, yes.

Well...I don't think baldness is in my genes... I haven't paid attention to that. I should now.
How quickly would you lose your hair? How many months/years on testosterone?

I do lol...I keep my head shaved, pretty much bald because it works out well for me but if I did choose to grow it out, I still have a lot of hair. Been on T for a little over 5 years now.

It varies from person to person. Some people lose lots right away; some guys don't start losing till they are much older. I am losing hair--at least, I can see it in my hands when I shampoo, and I wind up with lots of loose hairs all over the bathroom. But the hair on my head doesn't seem to be actually thinning. I think my hairline is still receding, though.
I started T at 46. I'm 48 now, and I've been on it for, let's see, a year and nine months.

I think that it is genetics. T isn't going to make you go bald at 20 unless you have the genetics for early baldness. I am almost a year on T. I'm 19. My hair line changed to a male pattern but then stopped. My hair has actually gotten thicker. I had super thin, fine hair pre-T.

It's not that bad imo. A receding hairline of some sort is usually going to happen and at his age it's to be expected.
Plus, he's been on it for what... 20 years? I think he's doing good, lol.

Quote from: Lachlann on November 03, 2010, 11:03:30 PMWell, I just find it discouraging that he's the poster guy for "full head of hair", given that he's receding at least as much as the average cis guy his age. I have all number of male friends in their late 30s and 40s whose hairlines haven't moved a millimeter...but have seen no out trans guys who fit that description.

I've been on T since January 2005 and still have a full, thick head of hair. It receded a little at the temples, but otherwise has stayed where it was. And I'm 48. Both of my grandfathers had a full head of hair when they died and my dad started getting a little bald on the crown at 69 when he died, but otherwise had a full head of hair.
So yeah, depends on your genes. Mine give me great head hair, sucky facial hair. I have a neck beard that needs to be shaved daily and a goatee and sideburns but that's about it.

I'm 18, and i've been on T for a little over 7 months.
I started losing my hair at 6 months. A LOT came out in the shower, and when i dried off my hair. Luckily, i have really thick curly hair! I think it was just my hairline changing. It receded into a more male pattern. I wouldn't say that i'm balding per se, but my hairline has definitely shifted. It has a V shape now, but it's very slight and not really noticeable unless i pull my hair back. I just went through this month where i shed a lot of hair! The amount of hair loss seems to be back to normal now.
I think a big part of all the balding concerns on T, is that many transmen start T when they are upwards of 30. That's a normal age for hair loss and thinning, so when a transman goes on T, he'll lose a ton of hair at once, as his body catches up to what it would have been had he been biologically male. I don't think going on T causes any more hair loss than what would happen had you been biologically male. It's a much more gradual process for cismen, and i think it's pretty shocking for some transmen to lose all that hair at once!
If it makes you feel any better, i know a few ftms who have been on T for years, and still have a completely full heads of hair. Of course, they are younger guys in their 20's. haha who knows what'll happen when they hit middle age :P. Matt Kailey is pretty well known in the trans community, and he still has all his hair. He's been on T for over 10 years (i can't remember the exact number), and Balian Buschbaum too. I think it probably has less to do with how long they've been on T, and more to do with their age. I dunno, it does seem like a disproportionate number of older transmen experience hair loss. Maybe it has something to do with increased levels of DHT (compared to cismen)? I really don't know.

Depends on your genes. Look at both sides of your families though not just your mom's side since the gene is carried on the x chromosome.
My roommate, cis male, is completely bald. He starting losing his hair his senior year. I knew of other cis guys losing their hair in high school as well.
I'm not sure what really determines how soon males start going bald, most likely genes too.

There was me hoping that balding might only start from T day and happen gradually over the years.
Weirdly I don't think it matters on anyone else at all.
Thanks for the info.

I know a few guys that have been on T for a while.. not sure how many years... but a while for sure. a couple of them are in their 50's.. one has typical male pattern baldness, and one just has a slightly receding hairline.. and I don't know any bald younger guys on T.

Agree totally with the genetics thing....I know a lot of F to M's who actually gain thicker hair with test use....

IDK if I have more head hair now, but my hair has certainly become coarser which might give the effect of thicker hair.

My hair used to be super fine, almost like spidersilk. Now it is still pretty fine but noticeably coarser. I'm not sure whether this effect has anything to do with testosterone; I'm getting older, and I'm graying now.
