Anyone ever hear of 'mens' facial hair waxing?
My (mtf) wife is desperately trying to blend, and she's having such a hard time with hair removal... shes even tried plucking... *iee* I feel terrible, its SO painfuil for her, and its temporary...
Electrolosys is a ways off yet....
Has anyone tried waxing?

Hello Alison.
I've seen threads on this before and I imagine that people have tried it. Many women wax parts of their faces, upper lip, chin etc... The difference with male facial hair is it's obvious coarseness and toughness. I wax pretty well every part of my body, and even with my fine hair it hurts a little, and I still get a mild rash on some parts.
I guess the best thing to do would be to try it on a small patch and see how it goes. Of course she will have to grow the hair to about 1/4 to a 1/2 inch so that the wax can grip it. Regardless it's going to hurt.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, maybe there is someone here who has actually done it. :)
Chat later,
Steph

Aaaaaaarrrrgh! I tried it ONCE, never again. I thought my skin had come off with the hair. Besides being red the rest of the day, I got a rash the next and bumps everywhere when it grew back. OMG! I definately do not reccomend it. :o

When I was in the military back in the early 70's I had a seargent who could not shave. He used a special dipilatory the dermatologist prescribed for him. Seemed to work pretty good and he only had to use it 2 or 3 times a week. Check with your dermatologist. Me I have a very light beard so once in the morning, light makeup and I'm good for the day and most of the evening. My beard hair is both light and slow growing. Right now I could just powder my face through on some lipstick and head out the door if I wanted to. Still a pain in the wazoo to have to deal with everyday but doesn't seam nearly as bad as what Jaycie is having to deal with. Hopefully finances will improve soon and she can start electrolysis.

Ive tried and continued to wax my face. I use hard wax for brazilian<sp?> waxing. I find that if you do very VERY small patches at a time you see better results and you dont have to let the hair get nearly as long as you do useing other methods. Also I find that this wax dosnt cause nearly as many problems as other forms. (Where I end up with bumps and rashes) try plusking randomly first though to thin out the hair... less dence less pain.... hope this helps. (note it does help with that dark undergrowth)

I've been using the Aveeno Perfectly Smooth product on my legs and it seems to help. My wife also likes it. It is supposed to slow hair growth and make it finer when it does grow back.
I just got the Aveeno Perfectly Smooth Facial Moisturizer and will see how that works.

hi, i have had my face waxed( i am too facially structured a male to wear make-up)as i have a heavy gray beard...if you find the right person to do this, it isn't that bad vs. the smoothfeel-look results..i use a zip-lock bagof crushed ice and a damp soft facecloth to apply to the area immediately after the wax is pulled(ouch)...do not do the neck==pain beyond belief-this would make any terrorist fess up to all they know)..same ice tactic for a genital waxing...roger/renae

Thank GAWD for being fair, blonde, and starting hormones in my teens!!!!!! ;D I did a year of every other week electrolysis then quit. I have a scattering of fine, almost invisible hairs under my chin but one of those little motorized dipilatory machines takes care of that every other month when they get too long. I have a fine blonde moustache, but so does my mother ::) Don't have enough body fuzz to keep a peach modest!
Nothing worthwhile to contribute - just thanking my lucky stars for small mercies!

Careful with waxing and plucking. That can alter the hair path which can lead to ingrown hairs (yuck and definately not pretty) and create havok for the electrologist. If you have light skin and dark hair try laser. If you do not then just start with needle electro but get some recommendations from the community. It is very easy to be scarred by someone who does not know what they are doing. Even if you only go for an hour once a month it is a start.
For my routine I will shave once to twice. After getting the skin all nice and wet and warm I apply a shave gel or foam that has aloe in it and allow it to set for a few moments. I then carefully start shaving in the direction of the hair growth (most areas that is a downward stroke). Once done the pass I then wash off excess shave stuff with warm water. Check for stubble. If there are any areas that need another going over then I repeat. The trick is to resist the urge to heavily press the blade into the skin as that will cause a rash and/or bleeding. Once satisfied I splash my face with cold water. That will get me by for 8-12 hours. However, I do not have much in the way of body hair and that includes my face so YMMV. Wait at least 15 minutes before doing anything else to your skin.
For foundation makeup I use the Covergirl Aquasmooth compact. Even Ivory is a shade darker than my natural skin but it covers up everything pretty well. I do need to use a makeup remover at the end of the day though and that is an additional cost. On days I have really dark circles under my eyes or a tinge of blue in the facial hair areas I use Manic Panic's white foundation. It's also a nice foundation to use for the eyes in general to lighten them up.
As stated YMMV and good luck.

Title: Hair - waxing vs epilating vs electrolysis vs laser

First, I should say that I am a fully transitioned MtF transsexual, although this article is also about transgender females who haven't started HRT.
I'm here to give a little advice about hair removal, especially if you are on a budget, and let's face it - why spend more money than you need to.
DON'T use a hand or electric shaver, EVER. In other words, throw them away.
Waxing - great for pretty much any part of the body. Yes, that's right - including your face.
Epilating - the same as waxing, but much cheaper in the long run.
Electrolysis - Fabulous, regardless of the color of your hair, but can be frightfully expensive and very painful.
Laser - Similar to electrolysis, but not as effective (or not at all) if you have fair or gray hair.
This is my story and what I did to become pretty much hairless.
Body - thanks to my lack of testosterone and plentiful estrogen, most of my body hair simply disappeared. Of course, there were certain areas such as my legs and to a lesser extent, my arms, that still grew hair, but it was much softer as well as much more sparse. For me, epilating proved to be the best and cheapest method. The best epilator for me was the Braun Silk 7. BUT, you have to be committed and epilate often. In time the hair gets finer and finer and you'll also discover that in parts, hair will stop growing altogether. In fact, now, my legs are smoother than my 20 year old daughter simply because there is no hair there, except for the odd stubborn hair here and there. My arms are similar to my legs, although I never bothered with doing my arms as often as my legs. Just remember that ALL women do have a little bit of body hair, so don't get too hung up on being completely hair free. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having fine silky hair here and there. For example, my arms do have fine silky hair, but I stopped epilating them a long time ago.
Face - always a major problem as we all know. My facial hair ended up being definitely softer and possibly about 25 to 30% less. Still, it was a huge problem and for quite a while I used a hand shaver. I then got totally sick and tired of the shaving ritual and decided to have my face waxed. Honestly, it was all down hill from that moment onwards. In fact, rather than going through the horrible experience of growing my facial hair to a certain length and going back and having my face waxed, I started to use the Braun Silk 7 for my face as well. After approximately a year of epilating my face, the hair is so fine and so sparse that I now only epilate my face every now and then.
WARNINGS: Epilating (and waxing) can cause ingrown hairs, but there are ways to prevent this from happening. For starters, only epilate when your skin is totally clean, ie, after a shower or bath. It's only then that it is safe to epilate, simply because germs can get into skin where hair has been extracted. After epilation, use Witch Hazel to close the pores. Witch Hazel also has the benefit of being a very mild disinfectant and a toner all rolled into one. The next step, particularly if it's your face, is to apply a small quantity of aloe vera. You can leave the aloe vera on for as long as you like, although if you are going out and wish to apply makeup, then you'll need to wash it off. Simply leave it on for as long as it takes you to get dressed. If you intend applying makeup, use your favorite moisturizer sparingly and then apply your makeup. By the way, aloe vera is also a mild disinfectant and it also has certain healing properties as well as being a mild moisturizer.
While everyone is "made" differently, this is what worked for me. It should also work quite well for those who have not started HRT, although just be aware that it WILL take longer to achieve the same results as I achieved.
So, in summary, this is, by far, the cheapest way to get rid of all that unsightly hair. Yes, it's painful to begin with, so you'll just have to put your big girl pants on and suck it up!!! :)
FINALLY, you must be extremely committed.

Having a full male beard waxed is a very foolish thing to even try. I've heard horror stories from professional waxers who were disturbed having to do it. Lots of blood.

Waxing can be temporarily effective for other body areas because the roots are a different type and much less density. Facial hair is different.
The combination of male genetics and hormones can build about 40,000 facial roots and after several years of growth cycles those are very deep and well-established. While it might be possible for an individual with sparse facial hair to get away with waxing I would never suggest that for everyone. Waxing and plucking is known to increase the percentage of ingrown hair which will make permanent removal more difficult and expensive.
Shaving correctly doesn't cause as much ingrown hair because the starting point is already at the surface. A hair that is yanked in the middle of its growth cycle might re-grow correctly, but if some of the root bulbs originally formed at imperfect angles the re-growth can literally go sideways and then you have a mess.
