Title: What Do You Mean 'She'?! Oh, wait...
Post by: K8 on December 19, 2010, 01:03:11 PM
I was talking to a couple of people who don't know that I'm trans.  At one point they were talking to each other and referring to me, saying 'she' this and 'she' that.  I started to object, and then I realized that they were right.

We work so hard to get others to use the proper pronouns.  Sometimes I am so ready to correct them that I forget what the proper pronoun is. :icon_redface:  Is it just me, or does this happen to you?

I imagine it happens to everyone.

Not really relevant, since it doesn't count, but I've phased into being a girl full time online now. There are those "hey, wait a moment" moments, but they do pass. It's simply your mind trying to clear the junk out from the past who-knows-how-many years.

I'm still cis-male almost everywhere, so a couple of weeks ago when I was at a Gender Journeys session (and presenting as female, of course), during a discussion one of the other participants was speaking to someone and referring to me, and saying "Her" and "She", and... I guess this was pretty much the first time I'd had that happen, and it was initially sort of confusing, then it felt great!  More recently, at the company Christmas Potluck and gift exchange, presenting as Male, there was someone else in the room whose name is Colleen (she's from another office, so I don't hear that name around the office generally), and she was sitting near me.  A couple of times, someone would say "Oh, Colleen...", or refer to Colleen while gesturing in her (my) direction - I had to specifically avoid reacting, and it was hard...  ::)

At my old workplace, yeah. I used to be constantly on edge waiting for the wrong pronouns to drop.
New workplace, not a problem. I also ditched 95% of my pre-transition friends, so it doesn't happen in social situations either.
