Title: what race are you?
Post by: Michael Joseph on January 02, 2011, 01:32:27 PM
So I could be completely wrong, but from my own observations it seems like the transgender population is predominately white. Like I said, I could be totally wrong, and Im really curious to find out. If you chose other, specify below.

I tagged "other" since I'm a human cocktail, like the rest of Iceland, and I don't really see race as important at all.

The results will be very skewed as white people (Westerners in general) are overrepresented on the WWW.

P.S.  Hispanic is not a race.

I picked other because although my skin color is white I'm a billion different things.

I can see what you're asking here. But the reality is that European culture, which is another name for 'white', has a long history of progressive thought. Americans tend to reject the European label for historical reasons. But those that are of European or predomialy European origin are more European than they care to admit.

I'm pretty certain that there are people in every culture who need to transision, just as there have always been people who are homosexual, while living in a society that forbade them from normal relationships.

What this poll will likely show up is the greater acceptance of European culture for a progressive idea, self expression.

Sad, but true. Hopefully, those that dominate rest of the world's cultures will stop trying to tell their peoples what to think.

Incidently, I appreciate that this may seem a little culturally arrogant. Many cultures do indeed have traits and features that are admirable and enviable. But that is another issue.

And on a more serious note, non-American African, Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian.

Another "mutt" over here. Over half Asian, but also part Hawaiian so that's where the other came in.

I`M coming clean i`m an ethnic Moon Martian we established  bases there during the war with Venus eventually we established the refugees here on earth after the war. Interplantary travel was acomplshed by a system of chemical ingestion. Seriously I`m a mix of german and irish/english with just enough morrocan to get razor bumps. If i had a choice i`d be Thai they seem to have more understanding of people like me  ,and really cute features.

No one in my family trees came from the Caucasus region so that misleading term doesn't apply to me

How can I tell you never studied anthropology?

I am from the planet Venus and while sending me here to spy on people especially the Martians on Earth, my comrades from Venus messed up my disguise .. so I ended up looking like a guy from Mars....

Seriously although I answered asian ... this question is wrong on 3 points IMHO...

1. It assumes there is just 1 race in each country and in the case of asians, it assumes that there is 1 race of asians and similarly for other options here as well such as white as white is not a race but just a skin colour...
In the case of India/Indians:
Quote from Wikipedia:
QuoteThe populations of the Indian subcontinent however were problematic to classify.... They were assumed to be a mixture of an indigenous "Dravidian race", tentatively with an "Australoid" grouping, with an intrusive Aryan race, identified as a sub-race to the Caucasoid race, but some authors also assumed Mongolic admixture, so that India, for the purposes of scientific racism, presented a complicated mixture of all major types.
This means we are mix of almost everything..... European, Ethnic South Indian, Mongolian, etc...

2. alot of people dont know for certain which race they belong to and also it assumes that a lot of people who are transgendered have access to the internet and to susan's.

3. We are all human.

Also the Indians never ask which race one belongs to but which religion and area/state/country one is from in order to avoid upsetting another persons feelings and religious sensitivities and to help making friends and on several occasion to make fun of one another but in a friendly sort of way...

Oh boy, looks like I am the lone Hispanic representin'. As Tekla mentioned Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. I am part south American indigenous with a little French and god know what thrown in from my puerto rican father.

As also mentioned, African-American does not equal African or black.

Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Caribbean.  It has two countries, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  People who come from the Dominican Republic are Hispanic, as Spanish is the legal language, someone from Haiti (same island remember) are not Hispanic as the legal and dominant language is French.

I'm sorry, I most certainly have no intentions whatsoever to offend anyone. I did not realize that hispanic was an ethnicity not a race ( i confuse the two easily) and I did not mean to disclude African or black. Geography and all that is clearly not my thing and I was just genuinely curious. I am sincerely sorry if I did offend anyone but I absolutely did not mean to, and thank you everyone for your responses.

Many people confuse (misuse) the concepts of race, ethnicity and nationality.  No problem.  It does not mean anything to me outside of love of language and learning.  But.... it's really, really important to some people who would be very insulted if you get it wrong.

Really call an Aussie or a Kiwi 'British' or 'English' and you'll learn a whole lot of other new words that will not be proper for Sunday School.

And it's not even universally agreed upon.  Who is 'Hispanic' or 'Mexican' or 'Latino/Latina' - or even who, and what a 'Cholo' is all a matter of huge debate within that community.

I feel that MichaelJay attempted to include everyone to the best of his knowledge. The option "other" has been provided for those who view themselves as other than the options provided

To nit pick and/or personally attack MichaelJay regarding his curiosity is uncalled for

I myself only believe in one race of people... The human race... Everyone included... But, I'm not a racist... So what do I know?

Skin colour is the main differentiation method used to specify race, in most cases. However, since the Human Genome Project, the concept of "Race" is redundant, as the percentage of our genetic material that affects skin colour is a tiny fraction of the total.
I have recently discovered that one of my Great-grandmothers was Jewish, which according to the Nuremburg Laws, makes me Jewish.  That's another reason to throw the whole concept in history's rubbish bin too.

It would perhaps have been more useful to ask-"What is your cultural background?"  That would have allowed for a varied responses from within countries too.

I'm part of the human race.
Dividing the human race into small groups is not wise.
We are all sister and brothers.

I'd say that there are hundreds of millions of people who don't like being relegated to 'other' when they already have a well defined race.
Just because their race doesn't happen to be known to some kid in the USA, doesn't make it any less relevant.

Edit to add: apparently I called someone a 'name' in this post. Where?

And thats exactly why I wrote if you chose other to please specify below, I dont know much about race and ethnicity and all that and Im curious to know. I apologized to EVERYONE that I accidentally left out and Im sorry that that appology didnt mean anything to you, but theres nothing I can do now. Im the farthest thing from racist that I know and I as well believe that the human race is one and we are all equal, but we all come from some where and identify as something and this was something I thought might be interesting so I asked. Once again I am sorry my bad I messed up.

If I don't see a little more civility and a lot less baiting here, I will lock this thread.

Michaeljay has stated that this is new territory for him, he has said that he did not intentionally exclude anyone, and he has apologized (more than once now) for any offense that might have been taken. If you find this thread offensive and you cannot express your displeasure without rudeness and rancor, then maybe you should take a time out and put your nose to the wall. That's what my friend used to have her children do when they were out of line.
