Earlier this month, I finally caught the CNN documentary "Her Name Was Steven." It was a rerun but an enlightening one. The lesson I took from it was this:
The story of Susan Stanton is not just about her. Or the him she used to be. It is about us -- we "regular" folks -- and how we misjudge, grow and learn.

As the selection process played out at the time, I wrote a column about my ambivalent "struggle to comprehend" Stanton's gender issue.
