Title: Chromozone Check . . .

A concerned friend expressed his feelings to me today and he thinks that I'm sexually confussed and that I should have my chromozones checked. Does anyone think this is a good idea, or is it a waste of my time? If I were, I guess I'd be seeing an endocrinologist. . .

Hi Gina
Does he mean you are sexually confused, in a sexual way, or sexually confused in a gender way. If it's the later, then I think that such a test would show biologically what gender you are. I don't think it do anything as far as sexuality. Either way I think it would be a waste of time. But then I'm not an expert on these things :)
Chat later,
Steph

Is that check the Chromo Zone for your Chromosomes. Or check your Chromosomes to see if they are even in the Chromo Zone. ;D Sorry I just kept looking at that and couldn't help myself. Sometimes I'm just a smart arse.

what would it benifit? Do endocrinologists (Or any other doctors you encounter during transition) normally check that?
(we're still new at this hehe)

I don't believe it is normally checked. I haven't had a doctor suggest it. I suppose you could, but as you asked Alison. What benefit does it serve? I suppose from a feel good stand point you might be able to say see I have the female chromosome so you can't say I'm not a woman trapped in a mans body. But if not it still does not change anything. If you read enough about chromosomes you wil learn enough to know that folks who are supposed to know don't really know and it just gets more confusing and proves nothing. At least not for now.
I have read that there are men who hve female chromosome but are men, feel like men and have no doubt they are men. Either that or they are lying to whoever is asking the questions.
Who can say?
Cassie
P.S. What if your Cromozone check bounces? ;D

That's a very good question Stephanie, and the correct answer would be that my friend would was referring to me as being sexually confussed in a gender way. And that's a good question you asked Cassandra. He thinks that I should be certain where my chromosomes are and if they are what they should be.
I'll be seeing my GP next week and I'll ask him about it and I'll see what he says.

It would be a geneticist that checks your chromosomes. An endocrinologist deals with hormones. An endo can tell you if your base levels of hormones are within the normal range for bio males or females, which might indicate a genetic anomaly, but wouldn't be a positive indication.

A chromosone check is not a sure fire way to answer anything. Just look to the history of the Olympics. There were women who failed the chromosome check only to get pregnant and give birth. I find the only ones who bring this up are the conservative types who have failed to update their scientific knowledge since the 1940s. I also do not think that the tests pick up on mutations or aberations, but someone with more knowledge could answer that one.

Thanks LostInTime. Your probably right about it being a waste of my time. As said it was just a suggestion that a friend had made. Thanks to all for your heartfelt comments and input.

Gina,
It's not so much your chromosomes that would say anything, its your genes. (You know, Lee's, Levi, Riders, etc.) You would need to run a full genetic screening looking for matches between your genetic structure and your mother's and/or sister's. The key would be finding enough of the genes that would partially start the female to male inutero transformation, but not enough to complete it. And I'm not sure that this work has ever been done.
I know its a geeky answer, but I'm a science geek! I've spent 47 years working on this, and I'm not going to give up on it now!
Oh, and Cassie? The Chromozone is where the guys a the carwash buff your chrome to a high gloss!

Yesterday I brought up the topic of intersex and the myth of the Y chromosome. I could see that a few people were a bit surprised to find out that it is not always a cut and dry thing. I could have gone on about the SRY but that probably would have left them in the dust.

The only times I have ever seen chromosomes checked was to diagnose downs or klinefelters or some other genetic disorder. There is a huge difference between feeling like you are in the wrong body i.e. "I feel like I am a girl" and actually being in the wrong body i.e. "Genetically female with male appendages". how cruel would that be.....

QuoteSeriously I took it and I am a genetic male human being, with 46 chromosomes, 23 X's and 23 Y's.....gosh I hate it!
Oh, Tink! I have to throw in my biotech brainiac 2-cents here! :-* I just did genetics in class. Humans have 2 pairs of 23 chromosomes, that is, one pair from each parent...it does total to 46 chromosomes. One pair of sex chromosomes, either XX or XY, depending on what your dad contributed (and that's all my dad ever contributed) as all females have only X sex chromosomes.
During sex cell reproduction (either egg or sperm) the chromosomes are evenly divided during two nuclear divisions that result in 4 sex cells with 1 set of 23 chromosomes each. If the chromosomes do not divide correctly, it is called a nondisjunction, and the result is that a sex cell may have an extra chromosome or will be missing a chromosome. When the affected chromosomes are the sex chromosomes, it can produce Turner's Syndrome (XO) or Klinefelter's Syndrome (XXY). Anytime a nondisjunction happens, the result is not good.
I know you were joking around, Tink, but I had to show off and prove to you that I've been really burning eyelashes! >:D

Yes, I was joking! ;D, and I'm glad to know you are burning those lashes. Next time we'll talk about the different phases of meiosis, ok darling? ;) Good luck on your studies!

Hi gina,
save yourself the co-pay.. So what would matter if they were off or not 100% balanced?
You already know what you are and where you are going right?
then again i know that being reasured medically or emotionally is nice to have even if we know the answer sometimes>?
I think your friends here are all reassuring you emotionally!
luck!
