Title: Hypothetically speaking...dreams dreams dreams ahh...
Post by: wannalivethetruth on February 05, 2011, 12:53:40 AM
I wish there was an  easier way. More like just using stems cell to grow our inner gender up to the age we are now(or..want :) then somehow have our brain switched. Walla...its complete!. No more hormones or worrying about telling anyone about our history as a trans-woman or man. *sighs. Just a though lol!

My oldest brother is neuro surgeon and researcher and claims that within the next 50 years that will be possible to some degree or another.  With some of things I have seen I would say I believe him.

I hate to be quoting my brother, and you are correct from what I know, he specializes in parkinson and movement disorders.  But he was telling me that there is a problem with gene mutation in subjects past a certain age. It has a fancy medical name but as my brother explained to me it is the kingpin of the human condition everyone faces, aging.  He said it's what shuts off our cell regeneration because once our bodies start producing errors or mutations it triggers something that shuts down regeneration to stop us from mutating.  They are trying to figure out how to correct mutations and stimulate cell regeneration / generation.

So I think some of the targeted uses are in use and in proceeds of sized and scoped for distribution to the rest of the medical community.  The stem cell tooth regrowth thing comes to mind.  It should be available in the next 3 to 5 years from what the press releases.

I love these discussions because medical advancement has been a recent passion of mine.  I am excited for the future.  And yes the future is now, it's just a whole lot of conservative thinkers holding it back at this point.

Yeah I've often thought about this myself. My theroetical approach is to use nanites to fix all the DNA. They could probably help with integrating new organs too. This kind of nanotechnology is of course not currently possible but I think it will be one day. They'll probably be made out of carbon nanotubes. Actually they should be able to fix lots of other things too. Perhaps they're even the key to immortality...

You may see the technology in the next 5-10 years, but few people will actually be able to afford it. I worry that this sort of technology will only be used to further widen the gap between the rich and the poor. Then there's the whole over population issue. Without the technology to colonize other planets, stopping or reversing the aging process or extending the human lifespan may prove to be more problematic than advantageous.

QFT, the easiest way to ban something is to overprice it.
