Nice video Hillary! 8) I've been skating for over 40 years. Mostly vert lately for the cardio and some longboarding for the thrill of downhill speed. I wish my skills were as good as yours for doing grinds and kickflips and stuff but it's never too late to learn.

I do own a shortboard, but the wheels are too small and hard and I feel every bump in the pavement. I much prefer longboarding, it's a different kind of vibe and the feeling you get carving down a nice bit of tarmac is amazing...I love that little rush of adrenaline you get when the board starts accelerating down hill (and now the bearings are worn in my deck seriously moves). I also own a freebord, but I don't use it as much due to a lack of decent hills (you need serious gravity for it to work properly). I'm going to upgrade the bearings when I have some cash and hopefully that'll improve matters somewhat.

Anyway, these here are my wheels...a Landyachtz Battle Axe with a custum setup (randal 180's, 76mm ABEC gumballs and bones super swiss 6 bearings) and my freebord.

I do love watching people skate tho, there is such an art and grace to it...especially in the downhill stuff.

Very familiar! I partied with Tony Alva in Venice Beach in 1976 and the rest is history. I have been involved with the industry in one way or another ever since. That is a cool opportunity and I hope it turns out well. Please keep us posted.

I have an old pintail a friend gave me, but I suck at skateboarding in general although I love it. I don't have a lot of time or places to practise here.

I wanna get a Landyacthz mummy with some bennetts soon though... I wanna learn how to pump!
Anyone have advice for a good bushings setup for pumping? The wisdom of bushings eludes me.

Probably just buy a bushing kit and experiment...I'd have thought you'd want to go quite soft for pumping. I've currently got medium soft bushings on mine, which gives a nice balance between carving and stability down hill.

You need a lot of flex for pumping as well, have you looked at the Loaded Vanguard as an option? I think that will be a post op present to myself next year.

Not that I don't absolutely love my battle axe, but it's a bit more of a downhill board and I'd love something nice and flexi for commuting.

Having just said that I've been playing with the setup today and loosened the kinpin and wow, it just came alive under me.

I started skating back in 1978 but I didn't know anyone famous. Gave in up in the 80's because of living in the middle of nowhere then got into longboarding about five years ago.

I want to go see the Maryhill Festival of Speed, those people are insane and it looks like so much fun!

I'd love to be confident enough to come over to the states to hit some of the hills you have. Watching some of the videos on you tube just makes me want to skate and never stop

I've been considering the vanguard too, it looks excellent.. but I'm not sure, I'll be going to the UK next week and I'll ask around for advice and try different boards. They don't sell longboards where I live so all I can do for now is lurk on silverfish.

well i do love my battle axe, with softer bushings than i'm using it would be awesome for carving, though it's quite stiff (I am a feather weight though at 130lbs).

i have the same problem with my board, it's got close to no flex and it's really hard to maneuver for me even putting all my weight into it. though i guess it would be ok for down hill, there are not many spots around here.

The battle axe is a bamboo deck so it does have flex, but Like I said i'm a feather weight so it's quite stiff underfoot for me. Hence drooling over the vanguard. I'm using the Khiro blue bushings front and rear which with a bit of tweeking to the set up have given it a nice carvey feel. I might try some softer bushings on the front trucks just to see how it affects the carving.

a friend of mine goes softer on the front bushings and he swears by it :)

Well I'd defo recomend playing with the bushings you use, I've found a good compromise set up by mixing and matching the bushings front and rear, got med hard barrels and the cones are soft, which means that now i've flipped the axels on my trucks, tightening the kingpin a turn gives me awesome stability at speed (though i can't go into a drop knee) and losening them means the deck carves like a deamon.

I may still get the loaded dervish though...it looks smexy.

Oh expect a full report. I'm debating how to set it up, I bought some of the sabre 190mm downhill trucks, I'm thinking of swapping those with the randal RII's on the battle axe. But yes, expect excited babbling once i've got it, I really want to learn how to slide.

Well the dervish has arrived and is set up. It's a Ffex 2 deck, 190mm sabre trucks with the purple freeride barrel bushings, 76mm gumballs with some inexpensive bearings in (my super swiss 6 bearings need to be cleaned).

I've had a quick go and it just turns. It pumps like a dream as well. I just want to go out and skate right now, but someone's coming round to look at our spare room :(

I dunno why but I love the water, i never took to skating when I was a kid as it seemed liked standing on something that was going to zip out from under me haha.  Now 20 odd years later I learn about longboards :)

Same here - only make that 40 to 50 years later! - Oh and I'm going to get one and have a go even at 51. Yeah I know I'm nuts - but I'll have loads of fun getting all those bruises...  :laugh:

I know its deviant and not boarding - but as I have just purchased a set of blades I just had to post this video and article from the Uk Daily Telegraph where a blader has just managed to set off a speed camera doing over 50 Mph!

I started skating when I was around 6-7 and kept at it until around 14-16 when I fractured a finger and ankle and it was never the same after that but I kept at it until around 23. I still learnt a lot of new tricks but lost a lot like front side kickflips and some of the more strenuous tricks like that, even 360 flips became less consistent. :P I was always more tech than big and loved switch.. I'd try and get as much footage in switch so people had to guess :P kinda symbolic in a way!
I've considered starting it up again much like a lot of other hobbies that I quit, I feel like a lot of past achievements and talents have been lost because I want to wipe my past yet I want to carry some of them over so I can still tell and show people what I did and was good at when I was younger! Once I'm healed I'll be back out there skating and also join a band and play music again! I look forward to sliding in some bigspins! (my fav).

Helena you're tempting me tempting me, £140 is very reasonable and my bicycle is a shambling wreck... that Dervish would be the FUN new transport I need.  I really need my laser though (6 sessions discount), slooowly saving for that :)  but getting there :)

The £140 is deck only, a complete setup will be around £230...I went for a completely custom setup so in total it was about 260, but it was worth it for how damn well it rides.
