That was the topic of yesterday's Oprah. Lisa Ling introduced us to 7-year-old Hailey. Hailey was actually born Harry. But from around the age of 3 "he" was adamant that he was really a girl. Since kindergarten her parents have allowed her to live as a transgender at such a young age.

Public media goofs the terminology again, sigh!! Luckily I did not have to face this dilemma as a parent, and am now too far gone on hormones to test my luck again. Parents who are strong enough to let their child find the childs own identity are few and far between. My parents lacked that particular strength. Much to my parents dismay, an immune system problem left me, (their son,) with only "girlish" options for childhood activities until I was in my teens. I loved those activities and they felt right to me, and I did them well. I was never allowed to think that I should be doing those actions though, they were makeshift and done only because I was NOT A HEALTHY BOY. Somehow those last four words were all too true. I hope Hailey's childhood and young adulthood are filled with the love for who and what she is. A lucky young lady.
