Title: Do any of you like any foreign songs?
Post by: ~RoadToTrista~ on February 27, 2011, 04:21:41 PM
By foreign, I mean any song that isn't in English. If it's a song that has an English counterpart or vice versa, then choose it if you perfer it to the English version.

The song that inspired me to make this post was "Imaginate" by Wisin & Yandel.  ;D

I often listen to foreign music, but I live in a foreign country.
On the radio here we get to hear songs in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.
It's nice that switching of languages.

"Corporate Logic" by Stereoliza...foreign band, English words.

Tokio Hotel is a nice band and I love their songs that are in German, though the English version is also good.

I just like music in general and have a collection of Japanese CDs and German CDs.

I have a collection of Rammstein CD's that are among my favourites, which have inspired me to try and learn German.  Also like Indian and African music for the polyrythmic aspects.

I like Yelle. There may be a few songs that I have heard that are in different languages.  Most bands I listen to are from France, but have a lot of English sucks, if not all [M83, AIR]

And I don't mean like BNL, or Nickelback, etc.  Try Widemouth Mason, 5440, that sort of thing.

I like quite a bit of Romanian (and Moldovan), Japanese, Irish, and Welsh music. And before anyone says anything, I mean folk songs sung in Irish Gaelic or Welsh, not Irish and Welsh bands who perform in English.

Lots of Visual Kei, j-rock, and other Japanese things. I listen to the Paris Combo, which is a french singing jazz group. I listen to some German metal, and a lot of Celtic stuff. Oh. And spanish groups with good classical guitar, but only about half of it has lyrics.

ooo, this is a good question.

I love a LOT of Norwegian music. Kaizers Orchestra, Gåte, Skambankt, Vamp, Trang Fødsel...hm, there are many others but those are the ones that pop into mind.

That reminds me, Kaizers should have a new album out now and I totally forgot! :o

OMG! Another fan? :o Forgive how excited I am about to become, I only know one other girl who likes them.

What's your favourite song, Evelyn? Denne Uro is definitely up there for me as well as I Skyggen. Våken Drøm, Nok ein Sang om Havet, Månemannen...I could go on.

On an offnote, Emi Fujita covered a few vamp songs in English and really did not do too bad. Våken Drøm became "Wide Awake," Tir N'a Noir was translated, perhaps others that I don't remember. "Wide Awake" was truly fabulous, never thought Våken Drøm could ever be as beautiful or meaningful in English, but it was wonderful.

Beautiful translation. Thank you for linking it.
It's hard to pick a favorite song though. I like Siste Melding but i also like a lot of their stuff. Hestene star i regnet has a very cool feel to it as well... idk.  I'm not good at singling things down to "favorites" Vaken drom is beautifully enchanting. I don't know how to say everything i like here without writing like a page about it. The main male singer has a sexy voice ((well. the other singers have pretty voices too)), and i love the way they do the instrumentals.

((sorry. i don't know how to type the specialty characters for Norwegian.))

That might be true.  I don't care for opera.  I think it's too much style and not enough substance.  But I've heard a few opera songs in Italian which sounded really good.

Rap is much the same way.  I don't care much for the subject matter of most rap songs.  But I like the musical style.  I'll listen to just about any rap song as long as it isn't sung in English.

I assume the title is about songs in other than your local language, otherwise I would have to say pretty much everything from the UK and USA to start with. Hell even New Zealand bands and artists would have to be counted!

Sigur Rós is definitely my favourite foreign band. their lead singer recently released a solo album that has some english phrases, but the vast majority of their music is in Icelandic, or doesn't have any words at all - just singing. (:

I also really like the french band, Dionysos.

Foreign or otherwise, one of my favorite bands right there... ;)  Except their last two albums weren't all that hot.

Going way, way back, I'm a big fan of Françoise Hardy's 1960s material.  And the years that France Gall was on the Philips label were also pretty good (particularly the songs Serge Gainsbourg penned).

It's one of my favorites too! ;D  The first Mum song I ever heard was Faraway Swimmingpool and I was immediately sucked in to their sound.  Then it was Green Grass of Tunnel, and within one week of hearing those two, I'd bought all of their albums and singles. lol  I'm kind of obsessive like that.  In any case, I spent at least 6 months of last year listening to Mum nonstop.

Can't understand what they are saying when they sing in English.

I have a few albums in Welsh (because of my SFA fanness mainly) I like a few French stuff, some Serge Gainsbourg, I liked the guy who did the Belleville Rendezvous song, there is some very enjoyable Hungarian, Romanian gypsy stuff and I adore this cd called 'Flamenco Arabe" which starts fully flamenco and ends fully arabian and follows the journey from one to the other.

I am a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and have set out to collect all the songs along with their language variations.

I also like French girl singers of the 60s, so one of my latest acquisitions was Francoise Hardy's Find me a Boy which was the English version of her hit Tout Les Garcons.

Also stashed in my collection is a bunch of stuff with Eastern Bloc singers doing western pop songs in languages like Czech.

Have a rather large stash of that sorta stuff

Actually, another of my favorite bands, Saint Etienne, did a version of Find Me A Boy in 1999, but for the last 12 years I assumed it was their own version of Tous Les Garçons.  Turns out part of the lyrics are from François Hardy's English version!

Nowadays, a most popular singer in S. Korea is probably Park Jung-Hyun (Lena Park). Because people here are tired of idol groups, they want REAL singers. She is one of them. She is bilingual (Korean and English), but also can sing in Japanese.

There is also a 2002 reissue  (also done by Nena) of 99 Luftballons that has French lyrics.

Back in the 80s when it was hit, I was trying to figure out someway to get my then girlfriend clued into my crossdressing. Given that guys were wearing makeup and all, I told her that I wish I looked like Nena. She never got it, but did let me wear makeup to a  Psychedelic Furs concert.

In other news, I have a collection of 'western' top 40 hits done by Czech and Slovak artists such as Karel Gott, Vera Spinarova, and Hana Zagarova. Karel Gott's Czech version of The Doobie Bros' Long Train Running is a fave of mine.

Vera Spinarova did a Czech version of Blondie's Heart of Glass, calling it Kozmicka Laska (Cosmic Love). I thought is was so cool that I adapted it for my non de plume, Kozmik Alaska,  as a writer of FTM crossdresser fiction.

No... things don't really get banned in the US (not in most states, anyway).  There's just a mutual consensus in the mass media that if something makes people think, it doesn't get exposure.

Imagined so, Zoe.

It's getting like that most places unfortunately.

I'm kind of an otaku (though I think we've been relegated to being called weeaboos nowadays).  I like a lot of Japanese soundtracks with a classical and/or electronic feel, stuff from Yoko Kanno, Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yuu Miyake, Zuntata, & ZUN.  I also like some Japanese pop and rock, like The Pillows, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and School Food Punishment and some Spanish & Mexican rock, like Second, Cafe Tacuba, & Chikita Violenta.

Ultimate sixties style icon Francoise Hardy, probably her best song:

That song's cute. When I think of French songs from the 60's I just think of France Gall.

French sixties music was surprisingly good, France Gall, Dalida, Sheila, Francoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan, Jaques Dutronc, Jacqueline Taieb (sorry for the lack of accents this is a weird Italian keyboard). Here's Dalida who was tri-lingual in Italian, Arabic and French singing with Patty Pravo.

i basically don't listen to any english music at all - except Hedwig And The Angry Inch soundtrack.

my all time favourite is Einstuerzende Neubauten, all albums, for all different moods. i also listen to Feindflug (makes gym experience soooo much better).

I like foreign music although I don't understand it.  This especially holds true for music in animes.
