Cosmetics giant Maybelline recently picked an androgynous pop idol nicknamed 'Brother Zeng' to pitch its Smooth Minerals BB Cream to China's young women.

But her message also has the country's young men rushing out to buy the skincare product.

She embodies the kind of gender neutrality that is all the rage now among young Chinese, who grew up as the only child at home and look to role models who break traditional male and female stereotypes.
