Hey, where the heck is Tekla? My vote?
Well, dang, there are SOOO many truly great, great bands. How do you answer a question like this? Dang! Ain't easy, is it? :P The Beatles? Best band ever! Led Zeppelin? Hammer of the Gods! The Rolling Stones? Don't get me started on THEM! The list goes on and on ... however, when all is said and done, when the fat lady sings, when the cows come home ... at the end of the day ...
After 36 years, I'm STILL on The Bus!
Sunshine and Day Dream ... Orange Sunshine ... I'm On The Bus!

They never claimed to be professionals ... they were us and we were them ... they were not a band ... they were a faith ... we are the faithful ... to this very day! My personal fave? The Grateful Dead!
Sugar Magnolia 2/9/73 Grateful Dead -- BEST VERSION (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWuQiGaIsso#ws)
Many, many, many of the Haight-Ashbury freaks migrated HERE to The People's Republic of Portland after the scene faded aeons ago. Huge contingent of Dead Heads (... of all ages! ...) here. Every Sunday morning, as I'm crusing to L.A. Fitness, KGON's "Dawn of The Dead" is on the radio ... my version of "church!" :D :D :D

Okay, which band is YOUR fave? Rock this place!

Mine was a band called Our Lady Peace from Ontario, Canada when I was younger but their sound slowly changed around 2003 or so. Since then it's been Foo Fighters. I've heard every song and spent hours on youtube watching everything I could on them. They have a new album coming out in a couple days, though it was released on their website to stream for a week or so now.
This is one of their new songs, "I should have Known". It was written about the loss of a loved one to drugs, depression, etc if I am remembering an interview correctly. It features Krist Novoselic as a guest bassist. Together with Dave Grohl and Pat Smear that's all the surviving members of Nirvana who had a hand in making this song... I'm a pretty big fan of Nirvana too while I'm mentioning them.

Tough choice. Despite them never having toured here, and having only their LP's to go by I would say Jefferson Airplane.

Tekla was busy running John Cougar Mellon-head and while getting ready to do a five night run of Ms. Lauryn Hill, Scissor Sisters, Broken Social Scene, P.J. Harvey and Yellowcard with perhaps taking in Queens of the Stone Age on my one off night.
But so much of that is apples and oranges. How does one rank Pink Floyd vs. the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin vs. Jefferson Airplane?
So, I guess first of all, I'd have to say that I listen to very, very little studio music - if you can't do it live I'm really not all that interested.
People do ask me all the time what the best band I've ever seen perform was and that's an easy answer - The Grateful Dead. Which of course leads them to ask what the worse band I've ever seen was and the answer to that is also - The Grateful Dead. Though I think the Jerry Garcia Band was really a much better band on any given night.
But if Rock and Roll is a guitar centered deal (and it is) then the best band ever is whoever Jeff Beck is playing with that night.

:icon_redface: I am really not that old, but I would have to say Big Bands. Like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsay, etc.

LOVING everbody's replies so far. Hey, I'm learning a lot and having a blast. Thanks! Great replies. SOOO many great bands, how DO you pick just one?
@ Tekla:
Heck, yes! Everything you said vibes true. Incidentally, I loved John (Cougar) Mellencamp when he was in his heyday. Sumbitch could rock. Hell, I STILL like him ... though his tunes from the halcyon days.
The Dead ran hot and cold ... no doubt! Like you said, when they were off (as they are in the video I posted), they basically blew. When they were ON, they were simply THE BEST live band! Okay, okay, people can and will debate this, and I respect their opinions.
However, many true Dead Heads will agree with me. Once, I was at a show in 1977 when they were friggin' ON! Doggone place went into another dimension ... an alternative reality ... a real-world Nirvana! Un-freaking-believable. Heck, I saw Paul McCartney live in 1990 and even HE couldn't match it ... not even close. And, no, at that show, I had NOT imbibed in lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate 25 (... had I had access to Sandoz Laboratories' version of the same, I sure as heck woulda! ...) and STILL The Dead generated a contact high that was a religious ecstacy! That concert, by the way, was 5 hours long ... not unsual for The Dead back in The Day. They never overcharged. They never sold out. They loved their fans ... we loved them. Heck, it took them like two decades to make any money, but they became An Institution like no other before or since. They were Ground Zero of the 1960s counterculutre. Like I said, after all these years I'm STILL "on the bus" although only actually tripped once. Regret it? Nope! Peace.
Tekla, The Jerry Garcia Band? Saw 'em live and in person about 3-4 times back in The Day. Hell, even saw 'em with Merle Saunders ... with Donna Godchaux (... who I thought was a hot, classy hippie chick even if she did sing off-key ...) and with Maria Mulduar (... one hot little honey back in The Day! ...) ... as guest vocalists. Damn, what a show!!! You are right about how good The Jerry Garcia Band was. They were awesome.
Saw Kingfish once too. Pretty cool.
Postscript:
Did somebody mention Nirvana? Didn't they do that song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or somethink similar to that? DAMN, what a song!
@ Janet Lynn:
THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA!!!
They were undoubtedly The Beatles of their time! Those movies they made in the 1940s are so great. Your second video with Dorthea Dandridge (... such a hot babe! ...) and The Nicholas Brothers is, I believe, the final number at the very end of Glenn's best movie. Love, love, love that number! Great taste, hon!
Thank you very much, everybody. Hope we get more replies. I believe we will. This is a blast.

My favorite band of all time?
Beating out the Talking Heads, The Beatles, and Queen, who are all high on my list, My favorite is The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I'm not going to argue that they are the best band of all time, but the question was who was my favorite. So there you go.

I love the awesome, epic melding of wonderful harmonies and serious rocking out. Wild, raw lyrics, and so much energy. They continue to surprise me twenty years later!!

What a fun post Lacy Lynne. I really could not decide. There are just too many to love. I do love the Rolling Stones, "I can't get no satisfaction." In the car, on a sunny day, with the windows rolled down and my horrible voice, bellowing at the top of my lungs, with the words on the radio.

No doubt when your looking at 'running the table' for a nice long run the Beatles have a pretty good one:
Help>Rubber Soul>Yesterday and Today>Revolver>Sgt. Peppers
But the Stones pulled off this little set:
Their Satanic Majesties Request>Beggers Banquet>Let It Bleed>Sticky Fingers>Exile on Main Street
And the first five Zep is a pretty good run - but go out and get How the West Was Won and the complete shows from '75 at Earl's Court in London and you'll never listen to that lame limp-dick studio junk again. Live they were the real deal.
And, often overlooked is this mindblowing set from the Kinks spanning 1968 to 1974:
The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society>Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)>Lola versus Powerman and the Money-go-round>Muswell Hillbillies>Everybody's in Show-Biz>Preservation: Act 1>Preservation: Act 2
But the Beatles never really got to master the live show once they were famous, and the Rolling Stones let production overwhelm performance after '72 and never again matched the sheer awesomeness of the Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street tours that really made them 'the world's greatest rock and roll band' as they self-described themselves later.
Live, RHCP did great shows for a while, about the same time as Jane's Addiction was doing the same thing but that only lasted a few years. Nirvana was pretty much a one hit wonder, though it was a hell of a hit, much like Appetite for Destruction, which if you didn't see that Guns&Roses tour you really missed the best part of that band. I do have to put in a good word for Motorhead who has brought it live for 30 years now - they are real metal, most of the rest of that genera are poseurs who aren't fit to carry Lemmy's used strings. I'll make and exception for Bon Scott era AC/DC, and I'm sure Lemmy would too.
But, for the record - all the above, combined, can't touch the lineup of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and Gil Evens that did Kind of Blue - or the 'Trane groups that did My Favorite Things, Blue Train and A Love Supreme.
And in 100-150 years what will they be talking about in terms of rock in music schools? Frank Zappa, all the rest will be forgotten.

While I was working Mellon-head everyone else I knew was digging on this and came back to me the next day talking like they had just seen the second coming - and this from people I've been working and going to shows with for 40 years. So, tonight in America, this might well be the best band working.

I don't have one single fave band, I like several each for different reasons
Iron Maiden for their many, many, many epic scope and galloping sing along metal classics
Manic Street Preachers for their succinct analysis of the world's political establishment
The Wildhearts for their uncompromising and yet party hard rock and roll attitude

The Beatles
There is no acceptable argument to the contrary.
Point of order:
if the question is "Which was the BEST?" then one may, perhaps, insist there is only one right answer.
if the question is "who is your FAVORITE?" as here, then there is no logic to the claim everyone MUST have the same favorite band.

I always make a distinction when answering this question that might be a bit of a cheat - I list Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band as an individual artist - Bob Seger (who happened to have a band with a famous name) not unlike Springsteen being considered an individual despite everyone knowing the name of his band.
with that caveat made, my favorite all time band is U2
They have a lot of deep album stuff i don't get into, but the good stuff is so VERY good to my ears no one can top them.
Very close behind is ELO, and I'd put Queen in the top five on any list.
The Beatles?
Yeah, they were the most popular and all that, but I don't get 90% of the arguments for them. The one who sells the most records is not necessarily the BEST at anything.
But still, this is not a thread about "best" but "favorite" and the Beatles probably are not in my top 20 favorites, let alone #1

I was so fortunate to be in the UK University system when it was a testing ground for 'new' bands. Led Zep, Who, Wings, B Sabbath etc etc. every Saturday night for next to nothing.
Led Zep as a live band were fantastic, studio terrible. The Who possibly one of the best live bands ever (IMO). But I still move to Pink Floyd as the best live and studio band, their technique was so flawless that you just got excellent music always.
But comparing bands and music is one of the challenges that can never be solved. Queen, so totally stunning with Freddie burning the emotions of your soul. The Beatles, a revolution. David Bowie, an innovator. Alan Parsons, taught how to direct an album. Mike Oldfield, how to be too clever and a genius at the same time. Steppenwolf, possible\y wrote and played the song of a generation. Hendrix, say no more.
Interesting topic, making me think and enjoy the past. Thanks Lacey Lynn

Now that's funny, I ran into - or did they run into me? - Duran Duran just the other day. They were going to the art gallery/space that in the same building as the theater. So their jumbo SUV LUXXURY LIMO thing pull into the parking area that I have reserved (we pay for it) for running the show (Scissors Sisters, sold out, with two opening acts, so we were busy) and load out, and I start moving toward the limo wham, bam shouting like a Southern diplomat when Mister Manager emerges and starts to manage me.
Mister Manager told me who they were, and open the door a bit so I could see them. So I thought - "OK, professional courtesey and all, and besides I kinda liked that whole I miss the rains down in Africa deal." OK, yeah I know it Toto - I'm not that dumb, but I wasn't going to miss that little opportunity because lets just say the look on Mister Managers face was priceless and a half. So I let it sit on him for a few beats before I say "Hey, what would I know I spend the 80s following the Dead around."
The Beatles thing deserves a longer reply, so I'll do that tomorrow.
But hey, I live for people to say to me "Do you know who I am?!" Because my reply of "No, up to this moment I was quite happy in that ignorance, but your going to ruin that for me now aren't you?" And yes, I do say that to people, and in my line of work I get that chance once a month or so.

My favorite band is THE BAND and the last time i saw them in person was with over 600,000 at watkins glen NY raceway with the allman brothers and the greatful dead. They had that wonderful country rock sound which i loved. I also loved cooking with the hog farm women from vermont and it rained hard that weekend and i saw 6 giant amazon women rolling together in a giant mud puddle and well that was like they had found each other out of 600,000 and felt a bond and went for a roll in the mud which was so quaint.
I also liked silver apples, hendrix, janis, and lothar and the hand people and firesign theatre, frank zappa and the moody blues of course.. and cream did some great stuff
the beatles were like teen kid stuff kinda like the monkeys were pre teen stuff the rolling stones were toooo well too much like beatles competition for me.

YES! Darned straight! Back in The Day, we played the grooves off of that album. Personally, I'd majorly like to know your "Stranded on a Desert Island" top-ten list! I totally hand it to you. You know A LOT more about music than me, and I salute you ... and I learn a lot from your comments. Thanks!

The Beatles?
Yeah, they were the most popular and all that, but I don't get 90% of the arguments for them. The one who sells the most records is not necessarily the BEST at anything.
Wow, you must be the reincarnation of Dick Rowe.
I could go on almost forever about this at length (and don't worry, I will) but for those who don't want a huge argument, just the best one, here it is...
I think quite simply that the biggest reason that the Beatles get that title (Best Rock Band Ever) is because they pretty much invented it. Before the Beatles the pop charts were dominated by Andy Williams, Pat Boone and Connie Francis. What rock and roll there was (and there was very little at that) was not widely played as it was considered race music and black folk didn't get played on white stations. And, at that, it was individual performers, Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and the Comets and not just The Comets, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, not just The Crickets that ruled the charts and pop music. There was a surf deal going down largely in LA, but back in the day those musical units were referred to as 'groups' and 'combos' far more than they were called 'bands'. It was about one huge star and a bunch of autonomous back up musicians. But The Beatles were 'a band' - it wasn't just one of them, it was John, Paul, George & Ringo doing that most awesome of human activities, combining their efforts to create true synergy (something that is greater than a mere sum of the parts).
Pop music can be (and was almost from the start of their career) as Pre-Beatles and Post Beatles. It's hard to imagine, even for those of us who remember it and all but impossible for those that don't what a clear break they were from what had gone before. They were a new era. So much so that program directors like Rick Sklar of New York's WABC went so far as to forbid DJs from playing any "pre-Beatles" music, and that was in 1964.
Those four guys shattered constraints and limitations of their time and invented/created something that was both unique and original. "In the form that they worked in, in the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive."
Before The Beatles rock and roll was a very small part of the pop music scene. After The Beatles Rock was totally culturally dominant and would remain so for over half a century.
Quote from Rolling Stone associate editor Robert Greenfield.

still seems like an argument from popularity - "they were biggerthan anyone else so they were better"
If they had been "John Lennon and the Beatles" would that have taken away any of the distinction between them and "Buddy Holly and the Crickets"?
I'll grant that they legitimized, or rather magnified, the combination of vocal harmony with instrumentation (i.e.. bands like the Crickets tend to feature one primary voice, and harmony-heavy groups tended to not play their own instruments) which wasn't seen in the most popular acts prior to 1964.
But a LOT of what undisputed "rock and roll" since falls outside that pattern. Obvious examples - Stones, Zep, AC/DC, Foreigner, Journey, U2, ELO...all of them hung on the vocals one the singular lead singer.
so the "form" that the Beatles "invented" isn't even a form typical of most of the rock music which has come after them. In that sense, the idea that they "invented" modern rock music doesn't hold water to me.
The POPULARIZED it - which is the original argument: more popular = better
Which I respectfully disagree with.

To pick a favorite and/or greatest band of all time is impossible for me... I love several of them
To me it doesn't really matter the configuration of each band, but the fact that these various elements (Band members) somehow came together and BANG!!! the chemistry was/is undeniable
But if I were to list my top five BANDS it would probably go...
Beatles, Stones, Doors, Led Zep and... :eusa_think:

Way too much great music to say for sure. I don't think that there was anyone to top the Rolling Stones in the 60s. 70's and it's Iggy, Bowie The Sex Pistols and Joy Division, 80's Metallica and The Pet Shop Boys (yeah, I know, but both kept me sane in my own weird way) 90's Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and Throwing Muses. The last decade or so? There hasn't been much to thrill me tbh, maybe Boards of Canada, The Distillers and Pink.
If I had to pick one? Give me another decade or so!

Well I am more of a song person then a band person.
If you looked at my favourite 50 songs of all time it would go close to being by 50 different artists.
By their nature a "1 hit wonder" would rarely feature in a favourite band list.
However if I must name one the answer is quite easy:
U2
What's more, they are fabulous live although i would love to see them live in a more intimate setting then a stadium :)

I would say Frank Zappa but he had such a constant revolving door of musicians and I don't have a strong preference for any particular line up, so if I had to nail down a more tangible entity -i.e. an actual band, I'd pick King Crimson. Only slightly more tangible I know. I love covering Dinosaur, it's the only one I can pull off solo.

I really do love the early incarnations of King Crimson (up to the album Red), but not a big fan of anything after that, to be honest.
As for my fav, I can't pick between the two bands I go to in every situation, who I've listened to almost daily for 20 years and yet never tire: Saint Etienne and The Beatles.

I know, but the particular formations lasted a bit longer. Also the difference I see between calling King Crimson more of a band than any of Zappa's backing groups is...well that's it. Zappa always had a backing group, after the early Mothers it was always distinctly him no matter who was playing. KC seemed to act more as a unit with more influence from the members at the time. Plus the core of Fripp and Belew lasted quite a while (think they're still going?).

All time favourite would have to be Natural Snow Buildings.
The French duo generally make drone music and folk music, albums tend to gracefully switch between the two styles from their long chilled out drone pieces and eerie sometimes depressing folk-esque songs.
Best album: The Dance of the Moon and the Sun

I'm going to start a new thread. "Favorite" of all time tends to get the same people over and over of course - they are the big stars. If you're Floyd or AC, you've sold fifty million copies of one work, you're going to be on a lot of fav charts.
But lets try this for a more interesting list - So, who do you think the most criminally underrated bands are?

Quote from: tekla on July 09, 2011, 08:50:24 AMMost of my favourites probably. I mean they're not completely obscure because if you're a big fan of music you've probably at least heard of Natural Snow Buildings or drone music. Though to the main populace of the world they wouldn't even think of listen to music like drone and other less mainstream styles.

To me it's not really a question of underrated artists, but underrated genres since there's so many genres out there and yet to hear them you actually have to do some research and "explore" music which leaves most people oblivious to them. Then underrated artists within the different genres.

Yeah, I was just trying to be on that casual, first name basis with them big rock bands, you know, which one's Pink? And Back in Black has sold 49/50 million copies to date, a few million more than Floyd's Dark Side, but less than half of what Thriller sold.

My favorite artist of all time would be Jade Valerie (of the musical classical-meets-pop projects of Sweetbox, Jade Valerie, Saint Vox, Eternity..)
But if she were to quit music, my next favorites would be Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, Steven Wilson, Blackfield), Cradle Of Filth, Novembre, Marilyn Manson, Lady Gaga, Serena Ryder, Ladyhawke, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Pink, gosh there's really a big, varied list.
And to the poster above, I've worked on My Chem's tour transportation management before, sadly, I didn't get a free ticket to any of their shows. However, someone gave me the special box edition of The Black Parade as a present once, I absolutely adore that album. It's very classic, I was thrilled over the obvious oldies-homages throughout. But My Chem's a surprisingly talented band in general, as flamboyant as their image is, and despite how many additive fans they have, they truly do make very good music; Lady Gaga and Marilyn Manson are the same way. Always a very grand talent throughout, true performers.

Tough question...
Probably Opeth, Porcupine Tree, or Agalloch, followed closely by Omnium Gatherum, King's X, UFO, XTC, Thrice, Only Living Witness, Supersuckers, R.E.M., and older Goo Goo Dolls. Maybe some Gin Blossoms up in there, or Jimmy Eat World. Silverchair? Only old Silverchair. In Flames. Black Sabbath. Deep Purple. Rainbow. Triumph. Anything old, crusty, and British, like the Beatles, or Angel Witch.
And then, further down the line, Warpaint, Pelican, Metric, Tool, Dark Tranquillity, Fleetwood Mac, Sentenced, Rilo Kiley, and Stevie Nicks solo.
I'm a little [ludicrously] diverse... >:-)
Cheers,

While my usual answer to this is Sonic Youth for teaching me how to play guitar and write songs, the real answer is Jeromes Dream. I know no-one's heard of them, and I'm not going to force you to do it, because it's not for everyone, but they are far and away the most intense, emotional band I've ever come across. Their bassist/vocalist didnt use a mic at shows, he'd just shriek into the air as they played, over the top of the band. Eventually he blew his voice and the band broke up. If this sounds like something you might be into, I urge you to check out a video on youtube of them playing in a boxing ring, as it's the best performance I have ever seen from any band.

Metallica, no question.
Mom got me into Metallica when I was just nine and I've been listening to them ever since. I don't blindly worship them as some musical gods, I can honestly say if some song is just bad (like the whole St. Anger for example). The thing is that I've been listening to Metallica for so long that most of their songs have many of my memories in them and I could also blame them for my English skills. :D
And I really wouldn't mind having Hetfield's voice...

I worked a couple of the recent Metallica shows at the Fillmore in SF, load-in, set-up, spot light, decorations. It was pretty cool. When Lou Reed came out and played with them, it was pretty inspired. Could have done w/o Kid Rock, but the guy from Anthrax lit it up.

Marilyn Manson will always be my number one, and I know someone eventually is bound to rag on me for that, but I don't care. His music was the only bright point during the worst points of my life, and that means the world to me.
Pink Floyd is a very, very close second, though. As is Florence + The Machine.

Marilyn Manson will always be my number one, and I know someone eventually is bound to rag on me for that, but I don't care. His music was the only bright point during the worst points of my life, and that means the world to me.

Marilyn Manson's music is the reason I got through the second semester of college last year. I brought his guns god and government tour on my psp and played it when I had a break in between classes

ICP should be in the rock and roll hall of fame just for the lyric line: ->-bleeped-<-in' magnets, how do they work?
Guess old Shaggy and J were out getting stoned that day and missed a third grade science class. Then again, so did most of the Republican candidates for President.

His music is the reason I got through a lot of ->-bleeped-<-. It seems to be a common rallying-thing, he's just really goddamn inspirational, I think.

Could have done w/o Kid Rock, but the guy from Anthrax lit it up.
Why would anyone let Kid Rock on the stage in the first place.

It was a rock star thing, and as an official non-rock star I don't have a clue, I've always thought he sucked. But I've always though the same thing about Lars. Mister 3 tennis shoes in a dryer. But they let Lars play anyway.

I've never really had much of an opinion about Lars, but Metalica in general I do have an opinion. After the album And Justice for All I came to the conclusion that they had retired never to make music again, and out of the blue some alien beings used there body's as host body's and started playing really crappy music. They even made an album that was all black just like that one band who I think was called Spinal Tap.

I don't even like AJFA, to me they are strictly 2 and out. But the 3 (Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets) are pretty damn good. But that was a long time ago - 25 years (A QUARTER OF A CENTURY) since they were rocking like that.

Well I think we can thank the Gods of our own understandings that Dave Mustane and Les Claypool never made it with Metalica, and it looks like Les is the only one still making good music these days. Ride the Lightning is my favorite.

:D ::) 8) Lacey Lynne
Okay, which band is YOUR fave? Rock this place!
oh dear @Lacey Lynne, it would be so hard to answer your question "favorite band of all time" because as you know there are sooo many, but when pressed to pick one, it would have to be "the Jimi Hendrix Experience from 1967", just edging out Cream in the power trio space...
As far as Female performers and I think you'd agree dear friend, there was only one Janis Joplin....
Hugs
Cynthia -
