Title: Video Games

Yes, I'm talking about that part of the Entertainment industry that has only been around for little more than a couple of decades. Video games have fascinated me since a very early age (the first system I remember playing on was my dad's NES, and my love for gaming has grown exponentially with each new game I play.) So what systems do you own, which genres do you like best, and what (if you had to choose) is your absolute favorite game of all time?
I currently own a PS2 and a Gamecube, with a Wii possibly getting added to that rather short list in a couple months. In the past, I've enjoyed games on (starting with the earliest) my dad's NES, my mom's ex-boyfriend's Atari 2600, a Sega Genesis I shared with my sisters (and former stepdad Jimmy) (we even had a joystick pad for it, for when we played Desert Strike), an N64 which I also shared with my sisters, (Jimmy didn't like Starfox 64 half as much as he liked Desert Strike... sadly, our Genesis went on a trip to the junkyard because of poor care on my sisters' parts) a PS2 (this one, my sister Becky took with her when she moved, so I was PS2-less for years), and last, a PS I traded our old N64 in for because I was feeling RPG-deprived.
I absolutely love RPGs, especially the Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda series. I also love rhythm/music games such as Dance Dance Revolution, Frequency, Um Jammer Lammy and Guitar Hero. I've been a fan of Tony Hawk games since Pro Skater 2. I've loved playing fighting games ever since Mortal Kombat *has fond memories of (back, back, A) "Get over here!!"* I also like racing games, whether they feature cars, hovercrafts, hoverboards, or snowboards. I don't really like any other type of sports games... I used to play NFL Blitz, but even then, it was pretty boring to me (IMHO, they made it too easy to get a two-point conversion... BTW, if my friend Cory hadn't wanted to play that game so much, I wouldn't even know what that is.)
My favorite game, if my life and the lives of all my friends and family depended on choosing, is Thousand Arms for the Playstation. Most of you probably won't know that game, it was pretty obscure, and it's still rare to be able to find a copy (last time I played it, I had to borrow it from Becky, who got it from her boyfriend Patrick, and had to return it by Thanksgiving.) It's an RPG by Atlus about an apprentice blacksmith named Meis who must find five Holy Flames before an evil emporer can get his hands on them. It also incorporates a dating minigame (about the closest you're going to get to a Japanese dating sim released in America), which is interweaved very well into the gameplay (in order to get new spells and specials to forge into your weapons, you have to go on dates with the girls to get their intimacy level with you up.) The fighting system is... okay, but not the best I've seen (only one character can fight at a time, the other two in your party mainly sit back and watch, though, this does have its benifits. You can have one of your backup characters ready with a Cure spell in case you need it.) The boss fights are awesome, and the ending is very, very emotional. (By the way, the contest for my favorite game is a very close call between Thousand Arms, Final Fantasy VIII, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.)
Anyway, now it's your turn. What systems do you own, what genres do you like, and what's your favorite game?

I don't really play many games anymore. My favorites are Devil May Cry and Shadow of the Colossus. But I don't play them really. All I play now is Counterstrike and Smash Brothers.
However, when Spore comes out, I will be playing that game religiously.

What systems do you own?
This beast, a WinXP box.
Which genres do you like best?
RPGs, hands down.
I find FPSes amusing and I also like simulation games usually. The open ended rpgish adventure games usually hook me for a while as well.
What is your absolute favorite game of all time?
Adventure Construction Set for the C=64

I used to be a hardcore gamer and RGPer...... Ive played games on everything from the dacassett bassed cinclair computer all the way to the gamecube... never played an Xbox though and have no intention of getting a wii or any of the newer things......
Ive disliked that most game systems sence the snes havnt had allot of light gun type games... you would allways have to buy it sporate and only have one or two games per system that are compatable now adays... so Id go to arcades for that but *Shrugs*
I Started HRT the first time just shortly after GTA San Andras<sp> came out for the PS2... My ex fience bought both a new PS2 and the game for me and I was hooked.... then HRT came and with in 2 weeks the PS2 became a glorified DVD player and all my games gathered dust.... I just dont have what it takes to be a proper gamer anymore *Shrugs*

I like RPG's and some FPS games. Important things to me are good story, good graphics, sensible game play system and good voice acting and writing. I just finished Fable and it hits on all counts, especially the voice acting and writing.
I did play some online stuff, but I don't really have the time for it any more. If anyone knows any other RPG's that fit my criteria, I'd sure like suggestions.

Currently I own a PS2 and a computer that I play games on. I like so many different types of games, it would be futile to start making a list. In the past, I've had Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Gamecube, PS, PS2, gameboy, gameboy advance, a palm pilot with games, and a pocket pc with games. I have even programmed several games in the past for both the PC, and Pocket PC.

I find myself enjoying videogames much much less on HRT - but I still enjoy them. The games I do still play almost always have female centric characters and storylines.
I love the female characters of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy. My name Brianna comes from a Aya Brea of Parasite Eve, whose storyline moved me a greatly as a child - "The worst foe lies within the self" is a motto for any transsexual.
Now that the male mask is gone I find myself deploring any game with violence, IE FPSs and GTAs. I also find myself free to glory in girly games like DDR - which I never could before.
That said, I have not bought any game or system since starting transition. My financial priorities are elsewhere.

I have a SNES but only one game :( When I was younger we didn't have the money to spend on game consoles so I usually just got to play occasionally if a friend had one. Living in the country meant it was a loooong walk to most of my friends houses if it was even possible so I didn't get to play much. I know it's kind of corny but I think it would be fun to have some of those older systems and games and catch up on a part of childhood that I missed.

I do want to thank you for starting this thread. I finally got off my but and (finally) ordered an LCD screen for my Pocket PC. It's been way too long that I've been without it. I don't even remember exactly how (I may have sat on it or something), but the screen broke sometime in the last year and a half and I never got around to ordering it until now.

Yes, I agree, A Link to the Past was awesome, I used to play it all the time on different SNES systems my friends owned, and used to have it when I saved up enough money to buy a GBA and a couple of games, back when I still had the PS. Right now, though, I'm a little more hooked on Twilight Princess, especially the transforming into a wolf part. (Wolves are my favorite wild animals, when I worked at the zoo, I would stall outside the wolf exhibit for at least 10 minutes during morning cleanup hehe)

I currently have a Wii (and I suppose Game Cube by extension) a PS2, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS,and (my favorite) all kinds of emulators on my compy.
My favorite games (not in order of preference)
-Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
-Guitar Hero 1 and 2 (PS 2)
-Mario Party 7 (Gamecube)
-Dragon Warrior III (Gameboy Advance)
-Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3 (NES)
-Tetris (NES and DS)
- Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
I've only recently begun getting into RPG's. As a kid I loved platformers, but now I'm liking some of the more mental challenges that can be found in an RPG.

I have played a lot of older games, from the Atari 2600, the Super Nintendo games, up to the original Sony Playstation (and a few other consoles I have forgotten). Partially this is from having a younger brother who was hooked on gaming, and I was the closest one around to play with him (which was fun, sometimes). I had favorites when I was younger, but the only games I've ever really been hooked on are Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man (yes, I know, those are old ones). I don't have any gaming systems currently, but I do have a "plug and play" Pac-Man game that honestly just sits there collecting dust most days...I really am not as interested in video games as much any more.

Ooh, I love that game. I played it raw, and still occasionally do, trying to see how quickly I can finish it. My best so far is 44 minutes, and I don't see how people can be faster, but they are. I love all the glitching/sequence breaking, like wall jumps (which isn't actually a glitch, but it may as well be, with how it lets you cheat so much), mockballing, and walking through walls and such.
Other great games in my opinion are Final Fantasy games (specifically V-VIII), Star Ocean II, CastleVania games (probably because of how much the recent ones resemble old Metroid games), and Zelda games. Obviously, I REALLY like RPGs, among other things.

I give a thousand votes for Legend of Zelda. Sheik is my hero, haha. And I'll give half that many points to Suikoden ( though I am guilty of only playing the third game ). We just bought Suikoden I from ebay and I'm so excited. That is a hard-to-find game! Ahem, but my second videogame addiction is Fire Emblem. Such a wonderful series.

The only thing that I didn't like was the flashing at the end of the last battle with Lavos, I thought I was going to have a seizure! :P

Did somebody say video games?
Been playing avidly since Pong.
Played games on an Atari 2600, Vic-20, Commodore64, TI/99, Apple II, Nintendo's, PS's, but mostly I love PC games. The only reason I would buy a console today is for my children. . . .and PS2 Tiger Woods Golf (I dunno, it's a really good game) .
My favorite games, the ones that really got me into computers and gaming were the interactive text adventures. They were like books that you had to work your way thru. The Infocom series like Zork were excellent. I remember playing thru Fahrenheit 451 and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Excellent interactive fictions games!! You can find copies online today.
Scott Adams made some of the best interactive fiction games as well.
Then they started incorporating graphics into the stories. Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry series as well as series like Heroes Quest were extremely popular.
I like pretty much most games, but not many Sports ones. I like first person shooters most. But I like a good RTS, RPG's (used to play Dungeons & Dragons on paper), driving games, simulations, you name it. But, I have gotten extremely picky in each genre. The interface had better be good and the game content had better be great or I won't waste my time. Been burned on way too many game purchases that were not as good as claimed to be.
All PC games, my favs are Half-Life Day of Defeat online. I love a good WWII FPS like Call of Duty. GTA series was amazing (not PS2 . .how the heck do you drive without a nice steering wheel?!!)! And I also have done a lot of online WWII dogfighting. Aces high, AirWarrior, WarBirds. I used to rank 2nd regularly as a B-17 bomber pilot on Compuserves Airwarrior out of thousands of players. Damned Biker (who I learned from) always got 1st. As a fighter pilot in my Spitfire I ranked around 250-300 (out of thousands). I was on the Damned Squadron and then we switched to Flying Tigers later on. HAIL DAMNED!!
Having the experience of avidly playing multiplayer FPS's since Doom II, I can be quite a formidable opponent. It was rare that I did not finish in 1st or 2nd place, back in the nineties. Particularly with Quake II Blue Wave CTF. But, these kids today . . .they kick my butt. Obviously my reaction time is slowing as I get older.
I also used to make maps on Duke Nukem 3d and Quake II.
Video games have always been on the top of my hobby list.

You were meant for me hon. ;D ;) :-*
Anyone remember the arcade game Gorf? Check this out.

Jamie Faye Fenton (born Jay Fenton) is a transgender software programmer. She is known for being the programmer of the 1981 hit arcade game, Gorf.
She is also one of the creators of MacroMind's VideoWorks software for the Apple Macintosh, which is known today as Macromedia Director.
AND, I am pretty sure one of the Sierra interactive fiction programmers is MtF. I forgot her name and can not find any info on her at the moment. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, please refresh my memory.

The company was originally created as Tierra Entertainment and not Sierra founded by Britney K. Brimhall and Christopher T. Warren.

LGBT Group Gathering
Speaker: Jeb Havens (Designer, 1st Playable Productions)
Date/Time: Thursday (March 23, 2006) 9:00am — 10:00am
Location (room): IGDA Booth
Track: IGDA
Format: 60-minute Group Gathering
Experience Level: All
Session Description
Thought you were the only one? This first-of-its-kind industry gathering seeks to bring together LGBT individuals involved in the video games industry for socializing, networking, support, and friendship – not to mention just taking a break from the expo floor.
Relax. Be yourself. Come share your story in a safe space. Make some new friends. All are welcome to participate in the discussions that will help shape the place of the LGBT community within the video games industry in the years to come.
Also, signups for the IGDA's LGBT mailing list will be available so we can continue the conversations long after the GDC.
Idea Takeaway
Participants will walk away with a new sense of community and support for the LGBT community within the video games industry.
Intended Audience
Any and all LGBT individuals involved in or interested in the video games industry. And, of course, in the spirit of tolerance, straight allies are more than welcome to attend as well.
Speaking Out: Exploring the LGBT Game Development Community
Speaker: Jeb Havens (Designer, 1st Playable Productions)
Date/Time: Thursday (March 23, 2006) 4:00pm — 5:00pm
Location (room): San Carlos II,
Track: IGDA
Format: 60-minute Roundtable
Experience Level: All
Session Description
Developers, HR professionals, managers, academics, and even straight people are welcome to attend the first ever GDC roundtable addressing the LGBT developer community (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender). LGBT individuals have an important presence in major creative entertainment industries such as Hollywood and Broadway, but are strangely absent from the table when it comes to the Video Game Industry. Come share your experiences, and help shape the LGBT community's place and future in our Industry. There are certainly a lot of possible topics to discuss and discover.
Why are there so few LGBT developers in the Industry? Is it similar to what is keeping other minorities and women out of the Industry? Do we have an "image" problem? Are we still operating under a largely "Boy's Club" culture? Why should anyone care about hiring LGBT developers? How would you even go about recruiting and retaining them? How should studios handle issues of privacy and harassment with regards to their LGBT employees? What are the fears and consequences of coming out and being out at work? How does this affect team dynamics and the games that are produced?
Idea Takeaway
Participants will leave with a clear idea of the major issues important to the LGBT developer community, and with recommended ways to begin addressing these issues.
Intended Audience
Developers, human resource professionals, managers, academics, and anyone interested in the LGBT community's place and future in the Industry. Also, anyone who was ever called "gay" in high school for wanting to make video games.
Workforce Diversity, Tacit Knowledge and Profitable Games
Speaker: Clarinda Merripen (Vice Pres of Operations, Cryptic Studios), Jeb Havens (Designer, 1st Playable Productions), Joseph Saulter (CEO, Entertainment Arts Research), Sheri Graner Ray (Freelance Designer and author), Hal Barwood (Designer/Writer, Finite Arts)
Date/Time: Friday (March 24, 2006) 10:30am — 11:30am
Location (room): A3/4, Convention C.
Track: IGDA
Format: 60-minute Panel
Experience Level: All
Session Description
Business gurus Jack Welch, Tom Peters and Marcus Buckingham think that teams that build things for people must reflect the customers they serve. They postulate that a lack of diversity in the workforce results in a smaller pool of ideas to draw on and decreases connection to the audience. And yet, the recently published IGDA report on workforce diversity in the games industry shows a startlingly white, young, male population. In this panel we examine how diversity impacts creativity and increases sales, as well as initiatives that broaden the workforce.
Idea Takeaway
An understanding of the importance of workforce diversity and the impact on the games we create.
Intended Audience
Managers, HR specialists and developers interested in workforce diversity and broadening the audience for games.

I have been a gamer since the age of 5. I currently have a Xbox 360, Wii, Modified Xbox with SNES,Genesis, Nintendo, Arcade, and GBA, and a Nintendo DS.
My favorite games are RPGs but with everything going on in life at the moment it's so hard to find time to play. Darn Responsibilities! My all time favorite is Final Fantasy. I started out with number 1 and now there are 12!
Will I ever get a PS3? Only time will tell, that and 600 dollars!!
Oh and Wii Bowling is the best game ever and it was FREE!!
Oh and how could I forget?!
My Modded PS2.
Sorry Baby! :)

Love Video Games, specifically ones where I can kill lots of characters, hopefully with blood spatter. I have an xbox, and i am quite addicted to KOTOR until i get stuck at one specific spot. Then I quit for a few months and start with a new character.

seeing as how Video games were a huge stress reliever, and the only thing I had to get my mind off of lots of things, I have tons and tons of them, lately I have been into Castlevania, (mainly the "Sorrow series") along with the .hack series, I just got Reminisce :)
But regardless of which ones I play I still do one specific thing in all of them(aside from play them for fun)
I experiment, and glitch hunt whenever I can...

Hehe you play female characters too? I play them as often as I can. When a game that should allow you to play female characters doesn't, I kinda get ticked. For instance, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland's story mode for the PS2 doesn't allow you to choose a female character, you can only choose female characters for the other modes, and that ticked me off so much, I dressed my character up in purple and pink anyway. :P But now I have THUG and THUG 2 for my XBox (the newest addition to my collection of consoles, making it three of the four last gen consoles I own... now I just need a Dreamcast... mostly for nostalgia reasons. :P As soon as I save up some money, I'll start searching eBay.)

MapleStory is a casual MMO grindfest. It's entertaining if you don't mind killing lots of monsters over and over. It also has some really good music.
Back on the topic of female characters, I showed my friend my necromancer in Guild Wars, and he said it reminded him of one of his college friends. I thought it was funny.

I have been a gamer since I was 5 when my parents got me a NES for christmas. I have had pretty much every nintendo system except gameboy VR and the gamecube (went with the PS-2). For console I mainly play Madden '07, Mario Galaxy and Mario v. Sonic at 2008 Olympics on the Wii. I got into gaming a bit during undergrad where I mostly played CS, Age of Empires, Unreal Tournament, Jedi Knight II, and world of warcraft.

I live for Kingdom Hearts!!! And I almost mean that literally! I mean, sometimes it's the only thing that makes me remember that I do want to live to see tomorrow.

I couldn't agree with you more The_Unforgiven I'm still that way with Kingdom Hearts. My fav characters in those games are Organization XIII through and through. My favorite one is Vexen. He's just like.....such an awesome character I dunno why I love him so much. My friend and mom complimented me and said I looked and acted like Vexen (was so complimented I could faint!) lol I know how you feel. The KH series just seems to cheer me up when I'm down and helps me look at life more positive.

My favorite character is Roxas. Probably because I can relate to him very well. And that's probably because of the whole 'don't know who I am' thing. It's kind of difficult to know yourself when your mind doesn't match your body. And my friend has also played it (she doesn't comprehend it too well), and she tells me I'm like Roxas, which I find ironic, but also the highest of compliments.
Have you ever taken any of the Kingdom Hearts II character quizes? It's kinda fun to see who you're most like. I always get Roxas, and when Roxas isn't included, I get Sora. You'll probably always get Vexen, too. It seems to me that I always find my favorite character is the one that is most like me.

I absolutely hate sports games, racing games, but I do enjoy games with an adventure element. Also, I will play fighting games such as Tekken Tag. On that game, I use Ling most of the time.
