Title: Is it the DHEA?
Post by: sascraps on May 02, 2011, 09:07:00 AM
So, I've been taking these supplements for a month now. Thyroid support, magnesium, B6, zinc every day and then add in milk thistle & DHEA every other day. And there's a lot of conflicting info out there about DHEA. It's either horrible stuff or it does nothing at all? Well, in the last couple of weeks I've had a lot of zits. Every time one goes away, a new one pops up somewhere. Nothing else seems to have happened, except that I noticed I haven't had any cramps in a while now. I used to have menstrual cramps like all the time, even when not on my period. It just occurred to me this morning that hey, I haven't had cramps in a long time now! But the zits are most noticeable. Last night, it was my boyfriend who said to me that the only cause for zits is T. And he has no idea that there's supposedly a slight chance that taking DHEA could end up as T because I didn't tell him that part. ( ) ha ha. So I wonder, have I got a little T going on in me?  ;D And I may have lost a couple of inches around the waist. Nothing noticeable at my size, but my shorts are falling off me.

I think that it can also go into the production of progesterone, which can cause acne as well.  I'm not sure if there's a way other than blood tests to check which way it's going.

When I was taking TT (terrestris tribulus?) alone, it gave me some zits, and under normal circumstances I NEVER get zits. I don't know if DHEA can give you zits, I haven't tried DHEA yet. It's hard to tell what exactly will cause zits, especially if you are taking so many different pills at once, and/or you're still going through puberty or you just have a bad diet or naturally oily skin.

Uhm I was on DHEA for.... two maybe three weeks and I stopped. Aside from giving me insomnia, acne, and super oily skin/hair it didn't do much for me. I guess I had a little bit more energy and lost a little bit of weight but it wasn't worth the side effects it was giving me. My side-effects coupled with the other risks I had heard DHEA increases were what made me stop taking it. I would say that the acne could definitely be a cause of the DHEA but both an increase of estrogen or testosterone could cause that and since DHEA converts into either one it's hard to say what is going on. The on;y thing I can suggest is getting some blood work done with your doctor.

Well I'm 34 so it's not puberty, and I don't have insurance and live in a place where there's no such thing as seeing a doctor without being insured or paying up front, so I can't really get things tested. I had just hoped maybe it made some T and not E.

Any change in your hormone levels, whether an increase in testosterone or an increase in estrogen, could conceivably have the side effects of acne. So there's really no way to tell for sure unless you get blood work done.
