Title: How long does it take for people to see you as YOU?

When someone that knows you pre-transition learns that you're transgendered, how long would you say it takes them to see you as the appropriate gender?
It just seems like - say for an FTM. That if he told his friends, they'd still see him as a she because it's what they've always known.
How long would you say it takes before that changes?
I have a couple close-friends that I feel can see me as female, but there are some people that haven't known too long and whenever I talk to them it just feels like they think I'm a guy no matter what I look or act like.

i think there is a certain amount of time it takes for them to adjust to it some never will i dont think you can quantify it in terms like oh 6 months or something like that i think the aha moment comes when if your ftm they dont stop talking when you approach if it is a non girl topic or if your mtf you start getting the courtesy you have already seen them extend to other girls. for example i was in a bar once with my childhood friend sonney and this guy decided i didnt belong there do to my trans statis and general appearence. as soon as he opened his mouth sonney stepped infront of me. a protective gesture i found endearing. little did the guy realize at the time that i was an off duty police officer and he was about to have a real bad night. lol

Even though I have been out for a few years now, very very few actually see me as a man (at least this is how I perceive it). I understand that most people wont be able to until I pass more effectively as a man. I'm early in my transition and I can count the people who really see me as a man on one hand. Thankfully my significant other is one of those people and he shows that he sees me as a man often, but most people won't even refer to me as "he".
