Title: Have you added Propecia after you...
Post by: Stephanie.Izann on May 09, 2011, 09:41:17 PM
Have any of you started on Propecia after the effects of HRT slowed down or you felt HRT was not doing enough (or fast enough results)?
Although I have seen a lot of results from my HRT, I STILL want a bit more.
My boobs are def getting there. I'm almost an A cup after 7 months. But I want a bit more to happen around my face and shape. However, I seem to have (or so they say) a nice butt and thighs. My top portion is still not where I want it to  be since I am still a bit on the square side and I need to lose around 40 pounds or more. I have been mistake for a butch lesbian (hey I'll take what I can get).
Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it's not the initial look I am trying to go for.
I haven't gone even full-time yet, but I'd like to eventually at least go part time.

Enough Dysphoria ranting...Please post your thoughts please.  ;D

No, I haven't.  There is only so far you can suppress the amount of T in your system.  It's not worth it to go any further once your T is down in the normal female range.

I have added propecia into mine and must say it seems to make a difference. Besides the hair regrowth on my scalp I reached a full A cup around 7 months, but this was being on propecia for around 4 months at the time. I have a thread just a few down about my hormones and how they are effecting me that goes into a lot more detail but I personally highly recommend adding it in since the side effect of breast growth is something we all want for the mtf side of this!

I of course can't guarantee how much is from the Propecia, or just the hormones themselves or getting an orchi at my 6 month mark, but even prior to the orchi I was having some pretty good results from just the spiro, estro, propecia and progesterone(cycled).

I'd speak to your doctor more about it since I don't know your hormone levels but I'm sure you'll get the green light. All the research I've done shows you can get some pretty amazing results from propecia if you take it for 1-2 years. I doubt I'll take it longer then that myself since imho I doubt it will continue to regrow hair or further develop my chest which is my whole reason for taking it!

Sources of this research?

I'm on Avodart (dutasteride) but mostly to help with my hair... not really breast or other areas. I think it helps in some other places, but it is nowhere as potent as E combined with S as far as overall body changes go. At 8 months of HRT I'm a full B and growing, so YMMV. FYI Avodart (dutasteride) is much more effective at inhibiting DHT as compared to finasteride (Proscar or Propecia).

Word of mouth through various transgender forums, as well of course as the tried and true method of personal experience.

Breast enlargement is a "negative" side effect as well but imo it's a positive!

I was on it for like 2 weeks but decided to stop, maybe my dose was just too high though. My testicles ached and I had absolutely no sex drive (as opposed to a little while on only spiro/estradiol) but my breasts did feel really sore and maybe it would help with growth - then again I'm not sure soreness necessarily indicates your breasts are growing any faster than without soreness.

Many Transwomen add Propecia or finasteride to their HRT for MPB.

The testicle pain and the lack of sex drives are also listed as negative side effects. If you were taking higher then 1mg I'd try to take half a pill instead. The pain tenderness is a good thing and them being sore means SOMETHING is going on with them, as for me I can track if I'm currently growing by how tender I am at the time, and every time it's painful to lay on my chest within a week I can notice an increase in size.

I thankfully had an orchie so the testicle pain isn't an option and as far as the lack of sex drive that's a ymmv part of the drug. I do max dosage of finasteride(propecia) and absolutely love it.

Hmmm, interesting indeed.  Facial changes are very subtle at this point without the Propecia added to the HRT mix.  I had an issue getting help with my prescription so  lost about a little less than a month on my spiro. Once I got that back it really jumped back up to the point where my boobs haven't stopped aching.  My boobs are not quite an "A" yet but I def see a difference. My skin has changed and my butt and thighs (as I have said already) have def got some shape to them. HOWEVER, I think I'm going to go ahead (based on the posts are here and research) and ask to add the Propecia or other drugs that might help me out even further. I feel I am going at a snails pace and although I DO have significant changes, they tend to be more subtle than I would want.  I want to get to the point where I can feel more confidant with my over all appearance and  at least go part time to start. Right now, I don't think I can even get away with part time. Laser has made a significant difference on my face. In fact, many people that I know think I am in my early 30's at most! then again, I've always had a bit of a baby face (I'm 44).I'm sure once I can synchronize my weight, HRT, and FFS I'll be fine.
As it is, I never thought I'd get this far. And even in my boy clothes, I am still occasionally M'aam' ed by people.
WOW, sorry for the long vent ladies.  I'll try to hold back next time. As you can tell, I have been doing a lot of thinking. ;)
