No matter how long I live in "the South", I will not get used to massive school closings and delays being announced because of approaching weather.  Up north it was always a matter of, "Can the principal back his car out of the driveway?"  So it may or may not snow.  There will be rain, some of which may form ice on the roads.  My friends are already telling me that I should plan on staying with them for an extra day.  And, just like the parental units used to say, it's because of the other people on the road.  LOL.

730 and all is quiet here.  Now over 300 closings listed.  The shower stall conveniently had stuff in there or I would have been at work already.  I did have to promise to return straight to the house when the weather starts to turn.  Fortunately it is only about 10 minutes from the office.

Well beep me if the apocolypse comes.   ;)

I strongly disliked the South for the 8 years I was there. I think the people are beyond obese and psychologically unhealthy. I think they are ignorant, intollerant, and relgiously freakish.

I also think that their obsession with watching a grown man chase a ball reflects the average Southerners capacity for intellect.

I also think they are willingfully ignorant of the fact that they are racists.

This is just my own opinion. I honestly cannot think of anything that redeems the culture.

Anyway, I don't know about the south, cause I never lived there, but up here in the Adirondack Mtns I'd be lucky to get a school closing for a blizzard. And 30 degree temperatures would be positively balmy for this time of year.

Why did I move to this frozen hell? :'(

This is sort of a correction to the previous post I made.  The measurement used compared divorces rate against population instead of divorce rate per marriage.  So instead of being pro-blue state, it's actually more neutral (http://www.pop.psu.edu/gia-core/divorce.htm).  Which I guess is still pretty good considering those states usually got a bum rap.

About an hour from where I teach, they had about 36" of snow in about 12 hours.  About a half hour further east, it was approaching 4 feet of fresh snow.

Just a typical winter in Upstate NY....

I have a sister in SOuth Carolina and have been going down for xmas for the past 15 years and I am always amazed by there relaxed stature and attitude toward race. The whole general attitude towards outsiders leaves something to be desired. But the weather is nice and most ppl are friendler and nice. A great place to visit,but I wouldnt want to live there.   My opinion....Generally friendly with a twist. I might consider moving there if they clean up there act. Definitly a relaxed atmosphere...

Ehh. South Carolina is still part of the South. It is closer to DC, my hometown. I don't know, if I wanted a relaxed place to live I'd move to a liberal country without a military-industrial complex.

Oh no, I'm moving from one frozen hell to another?!  :o I thought Syracuse would be warmer than Plattsburgh?! Oh, well. It's the only school in the state that's got the program I want. Guess I gotta laugh to keep from crying!

So in your view, people from the south are fat, ignorant, intolerant, racist, religiously freakish, and have no capacity for intellect.

While you are certainly entitled to your opinion on the subject, I think it's very sad that you would make gross generalizations like that.
Brianna, you seem far too intelligent for that.  The fact of the matter is that you would hit the roof if someone make generalizations like that about anything that affects you personally, but you have no problem making generalizations about others right back.

If someone says well all _________ are a, b, c, and d.
and you happen to associate with _________, you would hit the roof.
But you are quite quick to make generalizations about others.

I believe that is the definition of a hypocrite.

Well I have been caught in the south for over a decade now and am well aware of the weather.  Where I was originally from up north, we got plenty of ice storms and managed just fine.

Where I am at it is not so much of the snow (which there was very little of), it is the chicken little mentality that hits THE MOMENT that snow is predicted.  Some areas announce they will be closed or on delay immediately, without even seeing what it might be like the day of the event (and yes, a few times it failed to snow at all but they had already canceled classes).

What I enjoy seeing are the people who buy 4 wheel drive vehicles and then put them into 4 wheel drive while on ice.  One year I saw one road that I dubbed "The Valley of Lost SUVs".

Their educational system, not a lot of positive things to say at all.  The trailers they have for schools look nice.

As for racism, that exists everywhere.  It was especially bad where I lived up north.  Down south I have met an equal number of racists that were white, black, and latino.

I am looking forward to the day that I can flee but right now I am in a rather nice (if not complicated and unromantic) relationship that I will not give up.

When I moved from North Dakota, I strapped a snow shovel on top of my car.  As soon as people began asking "What's that?" I stopped.

He he he.... I was outside working today in a tee shirt.  I even worked up a sweat.  It was almost balmy.  I'm so lucky to live here! 

And, we have a beautiful night out tonight... 50 degrees and the stars are like diamonds in the sky.

Starting to warm up around me as well, we might hit near 70 F today.  It is good because it allows me to get out and walk around a bit during the day, have already dropped two pounds.  :)

I have also modified the dietary change that my doctor mandated (and I ignored after a bit), it was 1,000 calories a day and while it was fine at first, it left me without enough energy during the day.  So I walk during the day, am taking in between 1200-1300 calories, taking my vitamins, and then jump on my exercise machine at night for 30 minutes.  Instead of freezer pizza on Friday, I will be making my own which tastes better and is far healthier especially with the veggie pepperoni.

Syracuse is warmer ... by a bit.  It also doesn't have as much snow as the Mts. & the Tug Hill Plateau.

If you are looking for a church when you move down, let me know.  I know of a very open and accepting parish.
