Title: Favorite Thing To Be Called?
Post by: Devin87 on May 19, 2011, 10:48:38 PM
What's your favorite thing to be called as a guy-- like to show you're passing.  I've been called man a few times and it's pretty awesome, although right now I'm so timid about passing and I'm scared to open my mouth lest my voice give me away, so I feel really awkward when someone says "hey man" and I can't say anything back, so I try to do a chin nod, but if I'm really lacking the self-confidence it's more of a timid quick half smile, which is NOT what I'm going for.  But what I really can't wait to get called is son.  I've wanted to be called son since I was in high school.  I even complained to one my teachers who called all the boys son and he started calling me daughter (which does NOT have the same effect).  I haven't been called it yet, but whenever I imagine myself like going into a barber shop or gas station, I imagine getting called son and I can't wait until it actually happens.

I do the chin nod a LOT. It's almost a social move for me. But I understand you, I try to project my voice deeper when I respond, but it comes out sounding really fake/ awkward if I do it wrong. I've been called lad once before, which is kind of fun. I usually like it pretty simple though, "hey man, he, his". I've never been called son, but that would be a nice once because there would be NO room for doubt, haha. I hope it happens for you, that would be a smirk bringer for sure.

My favorite is "young man," although "sir" was amazing the first time I got it.  I also love being referred to as that "guy" by people who are talking about me.

Boss or Boss Man. I also sometimes find it odd and don't know where it comes from since I'm no one's boss.

I prefer my full first name (no nickname) or sir, mister, man, and bro.

I just like sir. Man and bro feel over used and don't have as much significance as "sir." I feel like sir is "I see you as male and am showing respect by calling you this." It's more formal.

I got called son once by a cafeteria lady and it was pretty awesome.

I like man and dude.

edit: also, my very favourite moment was when my mom, who is having trouble accepting this, said, "So, can I call you Jake?"

My favorite was a guy saying "Hey man" with a very thick Jamaican accent.
Anything male-specific is nice, but I prefer the casual terms like bro, man, and dude.  I've spent so long with people slipping in "hon" etc. into conversations that it's nice to have a random reminder that this person sees me as male.  I also love being called by my name, which doesn't happen very often.

"Boyfriend" probably makes me the happiest, especially who it's coming from. He's risking a lot of drama for openly saying "Yes, this is Nick, and he's my boyfriend, and you can deal with it". It makes me happy as hell.

I love getting "Sir"d but it's only happened once or twice, usually it's just "man" or "this guy". The best was in Subway, we were talking about our favorite subs and I mentioned mine, the guy behind the counter goes "This man right here knows how to do it". I had to fight off the urge to do a little happy dance right then and there.

Boyfriend. I got so ridiculously happy first time it happened I didn't quite know what to make of myself :D
Makes me mushy every time

We don't address eachother with gender-titles so much in Sweden, so mostly I have no way to tell if I pass or not. "That guy" and "him" are always nice.

Yeah I love Sir as well. Also bro -- but that's more jokingly than serious. Also I still get called Dude a lot and that's nice.

I also do the head nod a lot, since I'm normally wearing headphones and I don't want to try and talk.

As far as "nicknames", being called "sir" for the first time was awesome. I think "son" or "young man" are the ones I'm waiting to hear. Now I'm randomly imagining situations where such words would make sense to be used.  :P

I really don't like sir all that much.  I've been called it several times and it just irratates me.  Then again, ma'am used to irratate me the same way even when I was in denial.  It just makes me feel old.

I'd have to say, I work in retail and no one at my work knows I am a FTM. So, it's probably one of my favorite places to be. I don't look my age, so most of my co-workers call me "Boy" for fun. But I don't mind. The weirdest is when I get guests that insist on calling me "Boss" and reply with things like "Okay, Boss", "Right on, Boss". I don't really understand how the habit can be formed, maintained, and said to a young man that most people think probably shouldn't be working in the middle of a Wednesday morning when High Schoolers should be in session.

"Boyfriend" is really probably my favorite. That puts a whole new level to everything, a reality. "Sir, young man, man, dude, bro(ther)" all have come pretty common place but only "boyfriend" has that lingering affect like "Yeah, that's right boyfriend".

I have to say "sir". i went to disneyland a few months ago and was walking into california adventure, and the ticket lady was older maybe in her late 60's early 70's and i swiped my card and steped through and then i herd "ummm. sir?.....Sir?" i turn and she rechecked my id becouse it was in my female name and she wanted to check the picture on it. it was still awsome tho. this old lady with a computer telling her i was a chick decided to use sir becouse thats what she saw. it was great. i get it once in a while out at stores and such, but this was the best. I have to say tho doors are starting to get to me. i want to walk past them each time other guys open doors for me. i try to avoid it by speeding up to get to the doors before them tho >:-). but i like people usin brandon too. its odd the only person ive told who actuallly uses it is my gfs dad, he slips sometimes but hes pretty good about it.

I was crossing the road like a moron and almost got run over, the guy in the car shouted out 'priiiiiiick' and I laughed a bit and smiled xD

Bro, buddy, and boyfriend.

I've been called "bro" many times. I was called buddy once by a guy in one of my classes and was caught off guard by it, and when I was walking away, I just had this stupid smile on my face because I was so happy. xD

"Boyfriend" is great too.

Well, I didn't have to wait long! Some old lady who came to our moving sale today was trying to get my attention, so she was like "Young man, could you tell me how much this is?" :D I smiled at that, and then remembered that I had mentioned it on here yesterday. XD

Sir, or being referred to as a boyfriend. I hate terms like bro, man, buddy, son.... HATE them. Always have, always will. Better than being called by female terms, but barely. Dude is okay. The others just sound uneducated and rather... not condescending, but not respectful. Yeah, I know, I probably sound like a right arse, can't help it. I really don't appreciate being spoken down to just because I look young... and that's what it feels like.

This may sound counterintuitive, but I LOVE it when I get told to "suck it up princess" because it's the same tone of voice as is used amongst mates in my social group. It means that my trans status neither affects their view of me nor their behaviour towards me be at all.
They're neither tip-toeing around me nor mocking me.
I'm one of the guys.
So I get told to "suck it up princess" just like any other man in the group.

I got "->-bleeped-<-got" from a guy driving past me in a car the other day. As much as I hate the word, I love that he used that instead of "dyke." My friends were so confused why I was happy when I told them about it.

Dude and man are pretty cool, but I'm also a bit of a stoner/psychonaut haha

I like being called dapper, handsome or anything other than "pretty."

I love being called Mikah. It only happens online, and once in a grand while when my SO calls me that. Some day, I want to hear "boyfriend."

when i was out to no one, and i was trying to come out to my boyfriend who was COMPLETELY unaccepting at the time, we got in a fight about my gender identity and sexual orientation, and the difference between the two.  eventually, he accepted that i'm not a lesbian, and then started yelling '->-bleeped-<-' at me.  it made me week! and he couldn't understand why.  it was awesome to be visible for once, even though his label was derogatory.   ;D

If you identify as male, you don't have to refer to yourself as a girl, unless you like to. FAAB might be a term you'd like. You are one of the guys  :)

you're right. thanks Mikah! i'm still pretty new to all this. i've only been consciously questioning myself for a few months and don't post a great deal. and i just realized i don't often take the time to really refer to myself as male, but i definitely don't consider myself a girl. i usually use bio-female, but i apparently slipped lol. i like FAAB though, that way i don't have actually use the word female. anyways.. yea. good times.

I was on the bus the other day and I put my paper money in the box and I told the driver I'd get my quarter in a second because I could not find it. I sat down and dug the sucker out of my wallet. When the bus stopped to let someone off I walked up and kinda tossed the quarter into the coinbox from a good 4 feet away and some old guy says " Look at that guy go, he is like a ninja".

I felt epic.

My 70 year old grandma called me grandson  ;D that was pretty awesome. But the rest of my family usually still refers to me as female. To be fair I don't really bug them to call me otherwise so I find it's nicer when they do it on their own.

I have to say though, being called dude, bro,  bud, buddy, guy, son, sir, etc. is great but I find boss is annoying. The first time I ever heard it, and it was said to me, I was working at Walmart so I thought the guy was just being a huge dick.

I'm happy with Andy, he, him, sir, etc. My girlfriend calls me "sailor" sometimes in a flirty way which totally hits the spot.  ;D

When I was in Mexico, I was sitting at a table at a party with a bunch of ladies, and they were cutting up some sort of dessert, they passed the first slice all the way around the table till it got to me, saying, "para el caballero," i.e, "for the gentleman." I liked that, so yeah, when in Mexico, hearing "caballero" is nice.

'Dude' was one I got a lot even before transition.  That happens when you and all your friends are stoners.  I like it, but it feels pretty gender neutral to me, lots of girls I know call each other dude too.
Just hearing the right pronouns makes me happy... man, homie, bro, and such all feel nice, but for some reason make me a bit nervous too.  Something about feeling inferior to other guys that I'm not really able to articulate right now.  One that I quite like is 'boy.'  My friends call me that sometimes, mainly because I'm younger than all of them I guess, and it feels good.  Validates who I am but still sounds cute.
