Title: If you were offered surgery "tomorrow" for free would you do it?
Post by: Anatta on May 21, 2011, 08:38:18 PM
Kia Ora all,

::) A simple hypothetical question[wishful thinking perhaps for some], but it does require some serious food for thought!

Would you be both mentally and physically ready to have surgery if it was offered to you "tomorrow" for free? And it could "only' be performed "tomorrow" and not any other time for free...

Although this question is now only academic for me now.  I would answer with an emphatic YES and of course there is no hesitation on my part in answering this question.  As far as I can 'sense' within myself.  I still would have had the operation years before I finally realised I was female and I would not have thought twice about it even then.

Kind regards

YES! Only thing I'd hesitate on is who is doing it, what their credentials are, I certainly wouldn't want somebody doing my surgery that would mutilate me. But if we're speaking legit, really good surgeon, but of coarse I would, I'm ready now! But I'd assume there would be a catch, most of the time there is when involving anything free, again, that'd be another thing to give me a moment's pause, find out what they want from me, see if I am up for whatever that may be (a documentary, or be someone's slave for live, what?) but its just out of someone's generosity, then sure, lets do it!

I'd go for some free facial surgery.  Anything else, no.  I don't know how I feel about the risks/cost of GRS vs. the benefits.  Right now I don't think I'd ever have it done even if I transition.

Reluctantly I would say no. Purely because I believe nothing really comes for free, and I don't like feeling indebted to people, no matter how honorable their intentions are. When that time comes, it will be a culmination of my own efforts. Would I be mentally and physically ready for it, however... to that I say yes, and have been for years. It's the 'free' part that goes against my principles.

Yes. In a heartbeat.
I have dismissed any thought of getting SRS. It just seems so daunting to raise the capitol for a surgery when there are so many other things Sevan and I need our money for.

My best hope is they change things and allow for transition surgeries on my insurance. But with current attitudes out there I think there is a better chance of pigs flying.

first i want to say yes, but then i'd start worrying that this might not be the best surgeon, and i should research and why the heck is it even free and then i'd do some more procrastinating then think i do really want that and by then i would have lost the opportunity anyway

I "could" have had a free (covered by insurance) meta this summer.
I turned it down, and so I say No to this quiz.

I'm not ready.
There's little they can do for me and after looking at the "step by step" meta method I'm not ready to have that done because I'm not comfortable with a couple of the steps there of.
Maybe later, depending on something changing.

I would be packing my bags in a heart beat and calling my family to tell them I would be back in 7-8 days and I need someone to watch the cat.  My heart would be beating so hard the whole plane trip, its already going a little faster just thinking about the impossible of this.  lol.

It may at first seem irresponsible of me but think "how does anyone get experience if no one is willing to use an unexperienced surgeon?"

Was that enough time to think?
Well, my answer is a resounding "HECK YES, GIVE IT TO ME NOW!" with the only hesistation being that I may opt out if the selected surgeon has repeatedly messed up his past surgeries.
However, I would have no hesitation at all with being a 'test subject' for a brand new surgeon so he can get his feet wet. :-)

Top surgery? YES, get the damn things off!!

Bottom surgery? Ask me again when I've grown as much as I'm gonna, too early for meta right now :P If I was already big enough? I'd tell Mum not to bother waiting for me to come back from theatre, I'd be in there a very long time while it's all done ;)

Yes, but I would want to know alot more before having the surgery.  Lower surgery for ftm's varies so much depending on the surgeon.

A resounding yes.  I would.  There would be a lot of things that would need done after still, but...  Given an ideal situation, the rest would be basic cosmetic catch up.

This is a definite yes.

It almost seemed bizarre to me to see the third option, "No- I would need to get other important things sorted first". I guess this is for people who are still unsure who they need to be. I've just known for so long, but there are so many hurdles.

You question to the forum kind of probes the urgency on the members. So, I posited the same kind of question to you, but you evaded the answer. Would be like my saying "I already give myself a mental surgical SRS of my own"

Let me ask you a question: Let's assume that you are in a canoe with your mom, daughter, and spouse (or SO) none of which know how to swim, the boats flip, and you could only save one, which one?

Kia Ora,

::) What I might say now may not be what I would do in a given situation...

For example I would now say I would save the youngest person which would be the daughter...Because my ex and my mother would do the same in an "hypothetical" situation....

But in the long run, it all depend on "karma" kate, as to what I would actually do in any given situation...

Why do you value your mum's life over your daughter or spouses ?

Interesting as it turns out 99% of us girls say YES! And --- so do I, given the few important caveats like surgeon quality and PLEASE, not being someone's slave, sex or otherwise.

Our boys are far less enthusiastic as all say: no thank you. Food for thought? Aye :-)

Ok, I know at least in THAT department we (MtFs) seem to do mostly a tad better.
And otherwise? "What we can't feel, we ultimately don't understand".

Still my answer is a clear YES!

That. I don't and can't :'( have an offspring, but I'll choose my kid if I did in an answer to such a hypothetical question. Though in reality, I think what would actually happen is whoever is closest. Most people I don't think will skip over other friends and relatives thinking "they can die as I'll have to get to my kid/spouse/parent first".

This one is a very tough one to answer for me.
One, nothing is ever free. There is always a price to pay, even if it is later on down the road.
Two, it would depend on the surgeon.
Three, I want SRS just as much as any girl. I want to finally be right. But I am only 4 months into HRT. I am taking my baby steps in womanhood. I am not ready. And I am more concerned with raising my children, one of whom doesn't understand why his father is becoming a woman.
If it was meant to be, it would be when I was ready 100%.

yes, with some reservations of course. first of all the result has to be truly satisfactory, which means much better than any could manage today (i wouldn't want any of the current options for ftm surgery), secondly it would have to include getting rid of these two unnecessary lumps on my chest

I don't even care if my curves are out of place, I'd be showing that ->-bleeped-<- off all day! ;D If in this hypothetical situation, my mom magically for a day would let me, then it'd be brilliant. I would not for several reasons.  First of all, I am not planning on getting bottom surgery, as the available options do not seem to be much of a step up over what T will do.  Also I know it would hurt my family if they were to find out that I had done so without as much as being out to them.  However, if we were talking top surgery that might be worth a late night phone call to let them know what's up.

Metta Zenda :)

what time should I be there?!!?

I would take it if someone offered it, "tomorrow" for free.

I shouldn't, but I certainly would. I mean, I know taking things slower, and planning them out, and letting HRT do it's thing for some time is all the best way to do things. But, I just know that if I were offered something like that I would do it, I am too impatient at my core. I mean, it is much easier to wait and plan things out, because I need those plans  and time to make the money to afford surgery, but if I could afford it now, it would be very hard not to go full speed ahead consequences be damned.

I would jump at at that offer, right now i'm waiting for free treatment on the NHS but the worst thing is the 6 months of waiting to get nowhere. Whilst I can't afford this procedure the part that sells the question is the word "tomorrow" anything to put an end to the endless waiting & uncertainty

Definitely not.
The only downstairs surgery I plan on getting is a hysterecomy eventually. I enjoy sex way too much to take that away from myself, it's one of the only things that gives my mind a break.

The other costs were more than I bargained for.  I made it 57 years, I could have waited another 5 until I could fully retire.  And I would have eased my kids into it along the way if I really had to transition.  I doubt I would have felt such a strong need if I never got on HRT.

Yes, I would definitely do it.  Even though I don't have all the growth I want, I would still have the surgery.  Or at least a hysto if that was a part of the offer.

Of course...it's highly unlikely that kind of offer will occur.  But in the event that it does (when pigs soar the skies), I would take it.

I understand completely, I have said several times,
"I do not regret having transitioned, only the way I went about it."
I am curious though, you indicated that you wish you had waited another five years.
Do you also regret not having transitioned earlier in your life?
Also, with all regrets for events in your unchangable past aside,
how would you characterize your satisfaction level with your life in this very moment?

Depends what surgery you mean.

If it's FFS, certainly not, that is entirely a last resort and I don't think I'll ever need it.

SRS... maybe. Free is very tempting, but surgery of any kind terrifies me and I'd rather have a few days to mentally prepare for it.

Also it depends on who is doing the surgery.
Title: Re: If you were offered surgery "tomorrow" for free would you do it?

I'm assuming for the sake of the question that what's implied is "your choice of surgeons, all expenses paid, all stipulations (such as time off hormones and so forth) met) - even your choice of dates"

In other words, all the prudent concerns anyone might have aside.

that still wouldn't cover things like "what about my kids?" or whatever but there are some things money can't fix.

It would depend what surgery for me... If it is top surgery (I'm a transguy) then yes, without hesitation. I'm scared of surgery, but top surgery is going to be vital for me to survive.

Yes with two conditions...
1) surgery must be performed by experienced professional.
2) guaranteed free (or affordable within my budget) HRT as soon as medically possible after surgery.

I chose yes with reservations, particularly concerning my weight.

It would be hard on my body to do both top AND bottom surgery  (and lipo) at the same time, but if I had to in order to get "free" offer then I will.  I'd just need a A LOT of recovery time and an excellent nurse.

Absolutely, yes. About the only thing I would be hesitant would be credentials. Even if they were doing it as part of their medical training to specialize in the procedure, as long as they were being overseen by someone well established and with great credentials in a hospital setting, I would probably be willing.

So, that would be a pretty strong yes.

I would say yes to SRS, but first I have to know quite a few things:

1: What's the catch?  (Do I have to say "thanks" publically, donate a kidney later in life, so forth so forth?)
2: Is it a liscensed professional with a good track record doing the job?  (I'd rather not be the doc's "first time" as I am not the romantic type.)
3: Will it be legally recognized?
4: What are the reasons for "giving away" a "free" surgery?  It's not really free: someone's paying for it.  Which leads to the next question:
5: Who is really paying for it?
6: Are the people "paying for it" consenting to the procedure, or are they being duped/strong-armed into it?
7: Who is paying for travel?  The nearest place that does this procedure is a 4 hour drive away from where I am at, I believe, down in SF.  I can pay for the travel, but pulling the money out of my undies in 24 hours isn't happening...I'd need to save up for a week or two/made sure I had the money to travel.

I am a hard skeptic.  If it is too good to be true, I WILL proceed with caution.

I selected "yes, without a doubt" but then I realized that I actually do have some reservations. I have a surgeon already, but if I had to pick someone else, I'd hunt for someone who would use the same method he is using. I don't want the scars under the chest.

Sure... as long as I get to pick the surgery. Top surgery, in a heartbeat -- I have reservations about bottom surgery, mainly because of my age: I know I don't heal as fast as I used to, and the rate of complications is pretty high, even with meta. Phalloplasty... just no. I don't want the scarring. And as far as meta goes, I'm nowhere near ready for it "down there," anyway.

And nothing is really free... I'd hate to get to the hospital and have them say, "Oh, by the way, we're also going to take one of your kidneys."   :o (Actually, I might go for that, but I'd have to think about it.)

Haha~ Took the words right out of my mouth.

Really, I'm not sure how healthy it would be, given that I'm not even on hormones yet, but there would still be zero hesitation on my part. This is 100% something I want, something I've wished for since what feels like forever, and regardless of whatever hormonal issues it might cause to get it that soon, if I said no, the cost of having to pay for it myself later would mean that there would be a huge possibility of it never happening at all.

I still wouldn't like anything else about my body, but at least I'd feel happy when I looked down.

Yes to top surgery. No to bottom but only because I'm not happy with any of the results it gives at this time. I feel there is more wiggle room for scientific advances that haven't been implemented to patients yet that I personally would prefer instead.
