Well, it's not really new. This is my 4th summer working there (it's a seasonal job), but it's my first summer as an assistant manager. There's a lot to learn and I'm still a little nervous, especially about all the radio stuff, but that's also a pretty cool part of the job. I get to wear a cool earpiece just like the CIA and FBI and Secret Service wear and say things like 10-4 and copy and I even have a code name (well, code number). So I get to feel all cool talking in code into a microphone on my collar and hearing the radio through my cool earpiece, although those things make it incredibly hard to pay attention to someone who's talking to you face to face.
But they did put my female name on my nametag, so I've pretty much given up trying to pass at work, although a lot of times I still do. I wear male shorts and shoes with my uniform shirt but I don't bind. I think my chesticles are pretty obvious, but apparently it doesn't stop me from passing to some people. I get he'd a lot by our guests, but I get she'd just as often. I had a cop call me buddy the other day, which was pretty cool (he had to reach across me for a pen in the office and said "excuse me, buddy" like an older male would say to a younger one).
And there's this one older guy (like in his 60s) in my group who's new this year and who is just completely convinced I'm a guy. I've talked to him several times, so he's heard my voice, I introduced myself to him by my female name and he's seen my nametag several times, and I'm not binding at work so I'm still shocked that he's calling me he and yesterday he even called me "big guy" when we ate lunch together. I'm a little nervous about how he's going to react when he realizes I'm not a guy (he's very Catholic. He even used to go to the same church I used to go to, although he went there before I was born), but it's so awesome to be treated like a guy that I don't want to put an end to it. But he seriously must be thinking "wow-- Brittni sure is a wierd name for a young man".
