When I first heard the term "Transgender" in the mid 1970s I thought great...  Another respectable term with a certain level of formality between ->-bleeped-<- and transsexual.

Certainly no where near as offensive or pathologizing as "gender variant".

I also never thought of ->-bleeped-<-s as fetishists.  Of course most of the ->-bleeped-<-s I knew were gay men aka drag queens.

A lot has changed since before the 80's.  When I getting my therapy back in the late 70's, I was handed some articles to read.  One professor called transsexualism, transvestism, and certain feminine behavior in men as perversions in his paper.  If presented the acronym "GID" back then, most researchers in the field would put it as Gender Identity DISORDER.  Some of those researchers I read did change their minds on this in the 80's as more TG subjects became available.
  Joelene, the lot less Dysphoric.

I just moved from Hobart were they still have attitiudes like the 80's. Im in Sydney now where they have the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. A lot of transsexuals, ->-bleeped-<-s and transgender people are involved and Im confused as to why we are included in the title 'Gay and Lesbian'....Shouldnt there be a 'T' in there somewhere?

Some of us had to endure being lumped-in with the gays back then, even though we say we are not gay.  To this day, I don't associate with gays that much because of those bad memories.  I had a lot better time relating and getting things done with the lesbians though.
