Hey out there :) My hair is over my shoulders and little gray. I started to grow it out for donating and have done so (locks of love) and will again but notived after using a flat iron my hair is breaking like crazy. I use the more expensive shampoo and conditioners and stopped the iron. although i like my hair less wavey i can deal with it, I'm sure y'all have had seen this before. I love reading the posts and sooooo glad I finally jumped in ;D
Had the same thing happen to me, my friend! ;D I loved having really straight hair and I DO have really straight hair when it's short. But once it got to about lip-length, it began getting wavy. Huh... I never in my life knew that I had wavy hair. And so I straightened it religiously.
Then one day I had to leave for work in a rush and couldn't take the three minutes it took to straighten it. I wound up getting so many compliments that I seriously questioned why I was wasting time straightening it in the first place. Since that day, I've only straightened it once and that was to go to a goth night my friend DJ's. Truth told, I hated it. If I wasn't running late (are you sensing a theme here?) I would have wetted it down again and let it go wavy.
Also, it's funny to note that many women with wavy hair want straight hair and many women with straight hair want wavy hair! All but one of my girlfriends is jealous of my hair except for the one who also has natural waves.
I'd kill for straight hair.
It gets boring having to get out the chair and whip to tame it every time you want to go somewhere. :-\ Unfortunately, I never really got used to straightening mine, and ended up with ears that should have seen me issuing the statement "live long and prosper"... then my sister in law thought they'd be good to use to remove the glue holding her hair extensions in place (stupid idea #41 in the "World History of Most Idiotic Notions Imaginable"). So they went in the bin.
I have long (grey) straight hair, almost down to my waist. I never had any curl to my hair even when I was younger (funny since my father had curly hair). I remember 40 years ago or so when my wife used to iron her hair (it was down to her waist).

I've been told many times my hair is way to nice for a guy, how right they were. But I'm worried my hair will continue breaking, I guess all I can do is give it some time. ps my sister is jelous of it. >:-)
It seems testosterone ruins hair. Males lose it females grow it where they don't want after they get older and lose estrogen. FTMs go bald well some of them but us MTFs who either get an orchy or have surgery below seem to always improve our hair. Thats one of the wonderful pluses. I had a friend who was MTF and was completely bald and in her mid 50's and got enough hair back to cover her head. She later died to to an illiness but she sure shocked many people with her new found hair. SheriChi@aol.com from chicago i still rmember you and think of you every now and then :)
Mine is naturally thick and wavy too. But I really try to avoid breakage, so heat in general is a no-no. This way, even with very irregular trimming, I don't notice any breakage at all. I use a sort of leave-in serum (Aveeno "shine cream" I think they call it) that doesn't make it perfectly straight, but gives it a nicer, more tamed and uniform, and at least a bit straighter, look. The difference is actually huge.
If you don't want to give up on the iron, you should at least look into a heat protection serum though.
I wish I knew more about hair, I really do. All I know is mine is wavy, almost black and longish. I can never decide on a style and with my hairline being the way it is, I just let it grow out and let it style itself. I could use some hairstyle suggestions to be honest. I am happy to see hair growing back into my hairline though. I have noticed though that it doesnt get anywhere near as oily as it used to before HRT. If I didnt wash it at least every 2 days, it looked icky.

Okay,
now I'm jealous - I always wanted pointy ears :).
As a teen I had hair below my shoulders, it was black and wavy, my sister had straight hair we both wanted each others
When I came out to my parents, they had my hair shaved off to make me a boy. :'(

Use a good heat protector....like straight solution by Hask. It can be found at most beauty supply stores. It's kind of cheap looking, but it is really amazing. I flat iron my hair just about every day and get no damage whatsoever.

That would kill me these days yikes!!!
so many of you sound like you have wonderful hair, my is quite wild at times or should i say has it's own mind :P
D<%) Cindy, your parents sound like mine. My dad took a pair of electrical pliers and ripped an earring out of my brother when he came home from Army basic training-I had to do his first aid dressings.
My hair is very thin now thanks to meds I had to have for my liver years ago. It never came back like they said it would. But I still have most of it after 55 years and it is getting long again but I keep it short in front so I can make bangs if I want-or should I say if my HAIR wants it.
I'm with the Cowsills-long as I can grow it my hair!!

The verse the record company wouldn't let the Cowsills record
My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?
Hi, im Cindy....im an asian so, for me having a beautiful is not really a big problem, i just was and dry my hair and im ready to go. But for those who wanted to grow your hair faster, u have to comb ur hair before washed it or shampoo and consider a good conditioner. And also there are shampoo who has hair hall control, you may choose that kind of shampoo too.
Cindy, your story sounds like mine to try & make us a boy. Luckily my mother was nice & helped me be a normal little girl as best she could, we had to hide things from my father. My mother had a beauty salon, it was such fun seeing women have their hair done back in those days, curlers, coloring, permanents for body, curl.
My hair is only fair, not a thick head of hair at all, maybe HRT & time will help make it thicker. For now I have to wear wigs to look my best. I love hair to play with, it's all so cool. A women & her hair go together like sugar & spice & all things nice.
