Title: Signs of progress
Post by: Padma on July 04, 2011, 11:19:47 AM
I've just downloaded an application form for a local "Leisure Card" that get you into gyms and swimming pools and stuff cheaper if you live in the area.

There's an anonymous diversity form to be filled in that comes with the application form - and for the first time, I'm seeing the options Male/Female/Transgender (this is in the UK, where transgender is the "official umbrella term" these days).

This may not excite you, but it excited me (as I'm only fairly recently allowing myself to think in these terms) to be recognised on a local government-generated diversity form.

You go, Teignbridge District Council! :)

Choose your area wisely, there are still places you need to stay away from over here.

Damn Padma, to think you were like "wonder what'll happen when the boobs start growing"!? I thought Leeds was a good place to be trans, but have yet to see something like that - although when I mentioned my predicament to the lady registering me to a job agency, she just responded with a "That's fine" and moved on ;D

Yeah, looks like we're slowly being pulled into the 21st century - not before time!

OK!  I have been to London, and I felt I was in NY. So, please kindly provide the good options.

What about middle England? I understand soem of my kin lives there (Frisians=descendants).

Well, Yorkshire and Devonshire seem to be good options.. ^_^ Also Brighton (where I'm from), or at least I've heard there are a lot of trans-folks living there.

Middle England? Well, Lincolnshire falls under Midlands territory and that's one place to stay away from :P

Just because "Officialdom" is getting with the programme doesn't mean you won't encounter mild-to-severe transphobia from individuals in most parts of Britain. Still, it heartened me to be visible on a form like this, and to think of all the people in this area who will see that three-way option and have it sink in a little more that it really is what's going on out there.

Yes, I agree with that, it must feel good not to live under a rock :)

I am very impressed. A Council that listens to the local people obviously. :)  Wish I had one! >:(
