Title: Testosterone confusion
Post by: Eli_ on July 06, 2011, 12:58:34 PM
I just filled my prescription for testosterone, and it says that it's a 90 day supply.  I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post my dose (I know some sites prohibit it), but say it's x mg weekly (obviously not the real number there).  That would mean I'd take xx mg per month, so if the bottle has xxx mg, shouldn't this be a 10 month supply rather than 3? I'm going to ask my doctor this Friday but I was just curious if there's something I'm missing...it just doesn't seem to make sense.

You are probably getting confused between ml and mg.
For example,if you have a 1ml bottle that equals to 200mg

You're correct that it would be a 10 month supply rather than three. My prescription says it's good for 90 days, but it's really more like 6 months or something.

I did the math several times, and I agree with s1ncere that you are most likely confusing mg and mL.

Milligram (mg) is a unit of mass/weight.  Pills and tablets are, generally, in mg.

Milliliter (mL) is a unit of volume.  Vials and ampules are, generally, in mL.

Most liquids in medicine also have a concentration which is expressed as mass/volume (e.g., mg/mL).  That is, how many mg are in 1 mL.

So, a vial of T would likely have something like this written on it (all "made up" numbers):  20 mg/mL.  This is the vial's concentration.  Your prescription likely says something like "10 mg/weekly" and the vial itself is likely to be 1 mL, 5 mL, or 10 mL.

In that scenario, you would draw up 0.5 mL (10 mg)/weekly.  How many months that dosage would last you for depends on how many total mL are in the vial.  At 0.5 mL a week, you would use 2 mL (40 mg)/monthly.  If your vial had 10 mL in it, you had have (roughly) a 5 month supply.

Hopefully that makes some sense. But please do ask your physician or pharmacist for advice before injecting.

Thanks, man! I wasn't sure if it was because T "goes bad" or something, like food expiring, but it sounds like it's probably some sort of clerical thing.
It would've been some pretty expensive "cheaper generic" T if it was only 3 months worth

nah t does expire. my bottle would technically last me longer than i'm supposed to use it based on the dose i take. the expiration will come before it runs out.

It does go bad. If you look at the box or vial it should have an expiration date. Usually the date is in around a year.

I know with my sons ... he was given a 90 day supply ... but technically your not suppose to repierce the vial .. and his dosage was less than what was in the vial .. actually he could get several dosages out of the vial ... so if he threw the vial away after each use like he was suppose to his supply was correct
