Lame post but really im jus tryina post a lot and use the comp while i got it since i dont have place to stay.
This has been on my mind tho
Lemme know where you live and how much it costs?
Im in pennsylvania and its $230
edit/ yeaaa im gonna save bout 300 for filing fees, new license, etc. iike zoe said
Colorado:
$25 - Two fingerprint cards and two sets of prints
$18 (+$1 postage) - FBI background check
$16.50 - CBI background check (hand-delivered)
$145 - court filing fee
$50 - newspaper publication fee
Not sure if you want to add it on, but $22 for new license and probably further fees at motor vehicles to switch the name on my car title and registration (which I keep forgetting to do).
So... $277.50 so far.
$500 I'm in FL
$400 filing fee
$100 fingerprinting, newspaper ad, etc.
Edit: Since others mentioned a lawyer wanted to point out this price is without a lawyer.
$400, paid for a lawyer to process papers, file them, print the newspaper ad, and court fees. A new license was about $22, but fingering printing wasn't required. Ah, I live in NV.
I went through an attorney for $403. Got my name and gender marker changed at the same time. The price would have been the same even if I had just gotten the name changed. I can't remember how much my new driver's license cost. Maybe $20?
I believe mine was about 180 all together, im in north carolina
I live in Washington State.
It was $145 for the name change filing fee, and $5 for every extra copy (I ended up not needing any).
$10 to change it on my diver's license.
And that was it. In my state I didn't have to print it in the newspaper, no background check or fingerprinting. nothing else.
I'm in Australia and it cost me $90 to get the paperwork filed with the BDM, which I didn't pay until it had been processed and I'd been issued my new birth certificate a week later. Then generally speaking to get your licence re-issued for any reason is $25, but I didn't have to pay and got my replacement licence free.
Why on earth would you need to pay for a newspaper ad to change your name... ???
These were my expenses for a name change in Indiana, but I hear the costs may vary by county. I did not hire a lawyer for this; in fact, minor name change forms apparently don't exist for my county (accidental deletion from the state website? who knows), so I used the forms from a different county to draft my own. That was an experience. ::)
Filing fee: $136
Newspaper fee: $75
Three certified copies of name change: $4.50
New driver's permit: $9
New birth certificate: $10 (if I ever get around to it)
Putting school administrators in a position where they have to use the name you prefer: Priceless

They make you do this so they can be sure you aren't changing your name to avoid bill collectors or to defraud anyone. The idea is, companies check the papers for name changes and make sure you aren't changing your name to get out of paying off money you owe them.
damn im pretty surprised got so many responses on this already tonite.
thanks for sharing guys
yeaa i still gotta call my county court and ask some stuff.. dont have too much money yet but im savin every penny (since i dont got a job)
150$ in washington state.
whats up with the news papers?
Iceland...
probably about 50 USD total...
IIRC
I am also in Washington State. Stevens county to be exact.
I don't remember the exact cost but it was about 130$ total between court and clerk fees.
No background check, no newspapers, no hasle. Name change is super easy in Washington state. Also in Washington trans is protected critters. ;)
im danish and it where around 500kr for one name (around 94.53 dollar)
and for chancing one name and adding another it where rougly 1000kr (around 189.06 doller)
(we got very strick name rules so many have to pick a gender neutral name as the first and then middle name is without limits)
Florida seems the most expensive out of everywhere. Glad I'm not changing my name quite yet.

Agreed.

It makes it a matter of public record so that people you owe debts to, or criminal charges can follow you.
In BC Canada: (approximate prices)
$180 for legal change of name + name change certificate
$40 for fingerprinting and police record check
However many pieces of ID you need changed, pay for each seperately (Birth cert., drivers, etc)
If you are low income and trans you can get a doctor's note saying that a name change is a medical necessity and they will waive the $180. You still need to pay for the other stuff though.

I know in my county they'll wave filing fees if you are low income. See if your county court has a website; odds are it'll be listed there if they will waive fees.
I'm in New Hampshire, and it cost me $90, and was pretty quick and simple. It was one of the few times I was glad to live in NH.
WI $350 including filing fees, newspaper and birth cert.
I know in my county as well they let people file as indigent and wave the court fees. I didn't find this out until after I got my job :(
Brendon is right but also you could call or it could be a good idea to go down to your court house and ask. Something about face to face seems to work better than calling.
Thanks for all the info guys (and sharing)
Here in Victoria,( Australia not BC!), $89 to Births ,Deaths and Marriages, no other procedures, ads etc.
No charge for Driver's Licence car reg etc.
Alabama.
Name change form: $35-60.
Filing fees: $50.
Birth certificate: $5. (A guess, since that's how much regular copies cost.)
Each copy of the name change: $5.
Convincing my mother to let me get it changed with my money: Three livers and a human heart.
In Germany it is effing expensive, because it just can be done via court. You need 2 reports from therapists who really know about trans stuff and who'll confirm your transsexuality. One of them can be the therapist you are seeing anyway. Now, those reports cost a fortune.
I have heard between 1500 to 3000 Euros. Crazy.
Compared to that, name change that is not related to trans only costs 250 Euros. Yeah.
I live in Missouri and when i asked a lawyer he said everything plus lawyer fees would be about 900dollars.......................so i called the court house to find out how to get the forms and how to file it and stuff and the clerk said she had no clue, you have to talk to a lawyer.......................but other people have said they filed on there on and it was like 300...................
Does anyone have info on how to get a name change form for MO and all that stuff?
Does this help a little?
http://www.missourinamechange.com/name_change_forms.php (http://www.missourinamechange.com/name_change_forms.php)
There's also this generic form:
http://www.namechangelaw.com/states/mo/missouri.htm (http://www.namechangelaw.com/states/mo/missouri.htm)
$137. - Ontario Canada.
Pretty cheap and simple compared to most places. It's one 20 page form, sent away for 6-8 weeks and that's it. Changing all my cards, like health card and SIN card, have been free. Oh I did have to buy stamps and an envelope though lol.
Anyone know about the cost and how to go about it in California?
it cost $50.65 USD in south Africa
In Kentucky it cost me $60.00. I just went down to the county clerks office and showed my birth certificate, filled out a form and payed the fee. Then in about a week I got my official name change documents that had been approved by a judge in the mail. Pretty darn cheap and really simple.
In Tennessee, for most counties (except all the ones AROUND my county xD), it's $35 for the papers, $147 for the filing. You often have to pay for a notification in the local newspaper, and then you get a court date.
I've filled out my forms, but I have no transportation and I need to get a new Social Security card, seems I lost mine in Germany...
I'm pretty sure that in the UK it's only £10, which works out at about $16 unless there's anything else that you have to do other than a deed poll. It seems too cheap and simple...
Its about $250 (including publication fee) near me. Its easily half that in Atlanta, though I've heard of judges in neighboring counties that are notorious for not approving name changes until AFTER GRS.
165 in massachusetts. i plan on doing it before classes start again
How does it work if you go to college in one state but have a DL and birth cert from anothers??

The name change takes place whereever your legal residence is. Most college students maintain their legal residence as their parents address, so your name change would have to be filed in that county.

Except if they send it back for a reason that's stupid :-P By the time I get my actual name change certificate and new birth certificate, it will have been 3.5 months due to some bureaucratic bull->-bleeped-<-. But at least it's just one form.
In the county I live in which is in southeast Minnesota.
Background check - $5.00
Court costs (w/o lawyer) - 320.00
drivers license - 18.00
Also in Minnesota if you are low income you can ask the judge to waive the fees. I found my information on www.mncourts.com (http://www.mncourts.com). I would try that for your state.
Troy
I think it's different county-county in TN
But I just spoke with the probate court yesterday and she said it was :
$150 for filing fees
and I either A) get a lawyer or B) get the petition online - the petition costs 39.99 ... So 190 for everything.
As far as I know there was nothing in my county about notification via newspaper. Thankfully
$230 in PA? 0.0 I better start saving up!
Do I need any sort of recommendation to change my name/gender marker, or can I do it as soon as I turn 18 and have the cash?
Also, what are the rules regarding name/gender changes when you're not a full citizen of the country? I hope to go to school in Canada (I live in PA currently), and I won't be able to become a citizen until my senior year but I want to change my info as soon as I can.

In Hawaii my total was about $230. This includes the non-refundable filing fee for the petition ($50), publication fee ($115), notary payment, and other required documents like a birth certificate. The newspaper fees are iffy but allocating about $230-250 should be enough.
I don't exactly know the price for an exact name change.
All I know is that transexuals must get bottom surgery to get their names legally changed.
And I know that I will never do that because of financial problems.
You might need surgery to get the gender markers changed, but a name change is not the same deal.
It is here. I am in Malta. We don't have any particular rights here - except about working.
Yeah, islands suck.
If I remember correctly it is 400 euro in the netherlands if your paycheck is below a certain minimum.
You need to get the namechange approved in court.
I'm in Chicago and filed under low income at the time so total cost for the filing, the news paper posting, court appearance, etc $75.
I know this thread was started a while ago but... I live in Boston and I got my name change for free and without a lawyer. No newspaper or finger printing or anything like that. I filled out this form saying I made under a certain amount of money. They didn't require any paystubs either which helped me out. It took 2 months I think. I had to call to check on it because the jude went on vacation. After that they mailed the certified certificate in the mail. Oh wait I did pay $3 for the train ride to and from the court house. I had to pay for my ID to be changed maybe $25. My social security card was changed for free. I haven't gotten around to changing my birth certificate yet but I think is about $50, not sure.
