So I am younger and I am ftm transgender. I am going to an endocrinologist to talk about different options for me. Specifically estrogen blockers. I know that I am a guy and hope to get on testosterone and get top surgery by 19. I really hope I can get on testosterone before I am 18. The thing that is stopping me is my dad, and I understand where he is coming from. Last time we talked about testosterone he said what if you change your mind?"It's not reservable." I know all the effects and side effects/ health risks. How can I show him this is what I need? I'm feeling worse and worse everyday, I should be going through regular guys puberty/development.
Anyways I have a bunch of questions I am going to ask the endocrinologist, but if anyone has any suggestions on what to ask please share.
Thanks for your time.
Are you seeing a counselor? I think family counseling and such will help your father. My kid told us at 21 he was trans and we were reluctant for him to start transitioniong .. however, we went to a couple family counseling session and were part of a parents of transgender group for several months -- it is very reasuring when you hear other parents who are going through the same things.
Also, yahoo has a list serve/group for parents of ftm's. My wife and I are a member of the list. There are parents fighting to have their four year old called a boy in pre-school --- and some whose child is transitioning at 40 .... so it has the whole gamit and it's all over the country.
Exposing your parents to other transfamilies I think will help. There are also transgender conferences going on all over the country....I know Minnesota has one the first week of Sept. for example.
You definitely need to get some counseling especially if you are under 18, and if you are living at home. It does help if you can get your parents support.
