The name has gone through a lot of changes and it seems there's a trend away from Sex Reassignment Surgery.  What term do you prefer?

I call it sex reassignment surgery. It seems like the most correct term. I also use genital reassignment surgery, but not as often. I've always seen "SRS", and a lot of people seem to see "GRS" and think gender reassignment surgery, which just sounds grossly offensive to me. o__o;

Gender Corrective Surgery sounds like a more dangerous version of "cure"-therapy.
Never heard genital corrective surgery, but it sounds alright.

Still prefer SRS as it seems to be the most commonly understood.

I like GRS just because that's also the name of a tool used in jewelry making.  It makes me laugh when my dad talks about how much he loves his GRS and is glad to finally have it.

SRS, because the sex is getting fixed, not gender, I have always been a women, my gender cannot be changed but my sex can.

but, I don't mind the other terms much either.

I hadn't seen Genital Corrective Surgery before, but I like that one.  It seems to describe things better.

I used GRS not so long ago because SRS = South African Railway Systems, also it's very close to SAS (Special Army Services) etc.

But SRS is the more correct terms as it changes your physical sex, and not your brain sex i.e. gender.

So, SRS it is for me these days.

I don't get caught up in the language and I'm cool with people using whatever term they are comfortable with. I've used SRS, GRS, GCS before, sometimes depending on the company I'm speaking with. It's all the same to me, the words for don't really matter that much to me.

I like to use SRS, as more people know what I mean when I say it, and it has a nicer ring than GRS. Although, if I said GRS, I would define it as "Genital Reconstructive Surgery" which wasn't on the list. I feel it's the most accurate...

Best wishes.

Genital Reconstructive Surgery = GRS i made that name in 98 and pushed it all over the web during discussions  when it use to be SRS = sexual reasignment surgery

I figured we didn't change our gender or sex we just had our genitals reconstructed so i pushed it everywhere back then.

McGinn calls it "Gender Reassignment Surgery"
Bowers & Chettawut call it "Sex Reassignment Surgery"
Brassard uses both the above terms
Alter calls it "Gender Confirmation Surgery"
Beck calls it "Sex Change Operation"

WPATH uses "Sex Reassignment" in the SOC

Personally I would disagree. Sex is more complex than just what is between your legs. A definition of sex that is specifically genital-only can be really abusive. What is a boy soldier who steps on a landmine and loses a certain piece of anatomy? Suddenly no longer male? And how exactly do you define a neo-vagina given that there is no uterus, and it has no reproductive function. Sex reassignment surgery is actually rather inaccurate. But it has become a common use term, so I'm happy enough just keeping the inaccuracy. Especially given some of the alternatives.

Exactly, but I just call it SRS.

I like the genital ones, since those describe what the doctor is actually doing to your body. I don't like that they share an acronym with the gender ones though, which I find the most obnoxious. You are also missing the most common alternative I've heard which is "Gender Confirmation Surgery" (which I hate).

I think I feel exactly the same way. SRS seems so commonly used that I doubt it will change anytime soon, and I don't feel like getting worked up about it. At least we don't live in the age where it's simply called a sex change anymore. Although I think SRS is sort of just a paraphrasing of that...

Generally speaking I use SRS but don't really care which one others use-just so I get to have it myself eventually!

I use GRS in conversation if it ever comes up because I think it just flows better off the tongue.  Genital Reconstructive Surgery or Genital Reassignment Surgery would each be acceptable to me.

I was thinking about the same but genital correction surgery, oh well, close enough.

Out of curiosity, do most mtfs refer to it as bottom surgery?  I've noticed that a lot on the ftm boards, which makes sense with top/bottom surgery.  However, it seems like I see SRS/whatever acronym you use more in relation to transwomen.

I voted "Genital Corrective" surgery because I usually use the Icelandic term "kynleiðréttingaraðgerð" which literally translates to "sex-correction-surgery" making genital corrective surgery the closest applicable answer, even if "other" is available.

I have noticed that at least a few MTFs will generally refer to SRS, but if they want to include an orchi or whatever, sometimes they say bottom surgery. It is a bit easier then saying "permanent genital surgery" which in many states is the law about when an MTF can change their sex legally, but they don't usually specify that it has to be vaginaplasty specifically.

Of course english being what it is, not everyone is the same on the terminology.

Genital Corrective Surgery.  It really has nothing to do with my gender.  It is about correcting my genitals to match my gender.
