Title: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: MaxAloysius on July 26, 2011, 03:05:04 PM
Okay, so I seriously need to start doing something about the terrible place my body is in right now. I want to start working out and eating properly, just generally doing stuff to fix the problem, but I really lack motivation. So I was wondering if there were any guys on here who wanted to do the same, and if anyone was interested in a sort of unofficial competition? Well I shouldn't really call it a competition, because there will be no winner or losers, but it would be more of a challenge kind of thing, to see who can 'do fitness' the best. I know personally I'm more likely to stick with it if I'm trying to out-compete others.

Something like this probably isn't good for openly being on the forum, but maybe we could all check in with each other via email or something once a week and see how everyone's going?

Anyways, if anyone's interested let me know, I'm really keen for this now! :D

that's a good idea. i've actually been wanting to start to work out a bit and stuff since i'm on T now and it'll be good for top surgery, and in general. but like you said, i lack motivation or 'work-out buddy' -.-

so this might work =)
what would you plan on doing, like calculating weight/measurments and such every week?
i find it more motivating/easier to sort of be organized about it, i.e. recording excersize of the day and so on.

Quoteit'll be good for top surgery

My motivation exactly. :P The better muscle we have under the chesticles, the better chance we have of the surgeon being able to successfully contour the scars.  ;D

I'm not sure entirely, it would really depend on the level of comfort other people have with the kind of information they want to provide. Ideally I'd say starter pics and maybe once every couple of weeks to a month to see actual physical changes, as well as notes on what kind of things everyone's eating, and how long they're exercising for, and on what muscle groups they're focusing etc. Or alternatively we could all work out a plan together and tackle the same things, for example working out a diet for everyone to follow and a specific set of exercises and time spent exercising etc. It really is up to what everyone else is comfortable doing. :)

But I think we've got much more of a chance of succeeding at something like this if we all work together to make it happen. :D

This is a good idea. I'm up for this - like you, I need a kick up the arse to do what needs doing :-\ I'm still a novice so am doing lighter regimes for now compared to other folk on here, but seriously need to shake off the excess that's being shifted to my gut. Also need to shift it from my thighs, will have a look to see what exercises I need for that. (Unless any of you have ideas?) Not to mention my arms and pecs (like you, for surgery later).

Pics are a good idea - might serve as extra motivation on top of having buddies ^_^

ETA: Hey guys, talking about pec exercises - look what I found (http://www.scoobysworkshop.com/chest.htm)! ^_^ Also found something for thighs - one of the things we can do, swap tips?

Awesome! At least it's not just me then! :P Okay, so should be work it out by email or what? Does anyone know of a space we can all use for progress etc, but that is locked to anyone not given permission?

This won't be super heavy duty exercising either guys, so let's keep that in mind. We all have lives and jobs and other things to do, so I think a three hour a day workout is a little out of the question. :P So let's focus on eating right (I've been told by several experts that this makes up for about 80% of a good fitness regime) and some exercises that are easy to do at home without big gym style equipment.

Spot weight loss is a myth, so I don't think there's any more we can say about that other than there's no point in targeting a specific area of 'fat', but I'm sure we could all talk about the muscle groups we want to work out most. I'd say pecs are probably a huge one for us, for the already stated reasons, but what about things like arms and abs? I really want to be able to rip my shirt off one day and not be worried about what I look like underneath. :P
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: Nemo on July 26, 2011, 04:45:30 PM
Arms and abs for me, definitely, along with aforementioned thighs. By the looks of things, we'd need to set a day aside for each area during the week, leaving a day's rest in between. That home bodybuilding link I posted is well worth checking - not only for exercises but he also has some cheap and easy meal ideas.

I can set up a message board for us if that's any help? Would be easier for us to keep tabs/post pics/links etc., and see how everyone else is doing :) Not to mention linking to tips we find online.

Oh, before I forget - it's a funny time about now. I personally am going away for a couple of weeks in August, and I doubt I'd be the only one with summer plans.

I'm absolutely pathetic when it comes to muscles and being in shape. It's embarrassing really.

I'd love a work out buddy or two, but I'm horrid at things like this: keeping track of progress, keeping track of what I do and what I eat, all that jazz.

Fortunately I do have a game plan to finally get back to working out like I've been saying I need to for way too long. That said, I wish you guys good luck with this and your work outs! Hopefully it provides the motivation you need and the results you'd like!

Hey, I'd love to join in.  I'm flabby as hell at the moment.  This is my finals week, so I'm eating horribly and sitting on my butt a lot.  It'd be nice to have a kick in the ass to get going again.

Too bad everybody is not on facebook.  Could make a private group for it.

I would like to do it also.  Only downside for me is, I would only be able to do it for about 3 weeks cause of my surgery date....but could join in until then and once again after I am allowed to exercise again.
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: Adio on July 26, 2011, 06:35:31 PM
I'm interested in something like this now that I can exercise again.  I plan on getting back to the P90 program.  My eating habits really suck though.  I don't foresee that changing any time soon either.

But exercise I can definitely do.  I've been looking forward to it for a while.  The only thing is, I'm not comfortable posting my pictures online, especially not full body ones.  I have a really bad self-image and a huge fear of my photos being used inappropriately so...if I can participate without that (posting measurements is fine), then I'm up for it.

I'd be interested in joining this.  Its sad how lazy i've gotten since i don't use a bike as my main transportation anymore.  I used to average 20 miles a day on a fixed gear.

What if we each posted before pictures, along with your goal.  I'm sure everyone is looking for something different in the end.  I don't need to lose weight at all, but I would love to get my endurance up again and build some more muscle, especially in my arms and shoulders.   So anyway, post your goal, and then we can help each other figure out a workout and diet plan.  Then each week or something post a progress picture, and then we can help each other figure out if your workout is working, or to figure out something different to try if its not.  I like the idea of a private forum, or maybe a live journal type site.

Maybe now I'll actually use the free gym membership I get through work.

yeah, i think having a place to record it (ex. messageboard as mentioned) would be great. also so we can actually see progress, especially since i know i'll never remember it all week to week. and the picture thing is good too. normally i hate pics, especially of undesired weight and such, but for this purpose it'd be great, especially because others might be able to see any change/progress you might not (since you see yourself everyday)

and yeah i agree on the light workouts, with work/school etc, and also because it's summer -.-
i don't know about anyone else but i hate the heat, especially after working in a hot garage all day with hot engines, last thing i want to go when i get home is some hardcore workout haha.
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: Lee on July 26, 2011, 06:55:27 PM
Yeah, I hate the heat too.  I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to go down before heading out for a run.
Edit-Well, scratch that.  We just went from clear skies to typhoon in about 10 minutes.  Gotta love Colorado.
Edited edit-Oh, it's nice out again.  Time for a run it is then.

I've been contemplating working out again... that's it, just sitting on my ass contemplating. I'm also up for it. DailyBurn has it where you can add 'motivators' and I believe only motivators can see your stats or something, I don't know, it was a while ago that I signed up for that... lol used it like three times. But yeah I'm the competitive type so this was seriously an awesome idea. I don't know about pictures though, since I'm super self concious about how my my stomach's been looking lately.

Can a locked live journal page be viewed by anybody?   I also don't like to post pics since I am not 100% out.  I don't mind the info and measurements.  Think the pics are more motivation though.

I don't think so.  A moderated lj with locked, community-only posts should be pretty private.  An email membership screening by the mods would also be helpful in keeping the comm private.

Wow, this sounds like an awesome idea!   Thanks for thinking of is, Max! :D

Not all of us have people we can do this with IRL, so online is the next best thing, I think.

I actually know of this website, http://www.fitocracy.com/ (http://www.fitocracy.com/),  it's supposed to be like facebook only for workouts.
But I never created an account there because I didn't know anyone to do it with.  It's really only works to have friends join with you.
And I think this site could keep track of all that stuff for you.

I like this idea. I'm horrible about working out, I tend to just do it whenever I feel like it as I have no real motivation. >_> This might be helpful.

I have no real "goals"; I'd love to build up some muscle, but I'd mostly be in it for the fun of working out and building endurance/strength.

Pec exercises frighten me a bit o.O I don't want massive chesticles XD But if the muscle helps top surgery, it's all good, I reckon.

This current issue was weighing on my own mind recently; talk about coincidence.  I am going away for a vacation really soon, but when I get back, I would definitely be down for something like this.  I do work out rather regularly, but would love to get some more muscle and definition.

Wow, this sure got a lot of replies while I was at work! I'm glad everyone thinks it's a good idea! :D

I don't ever use LJ, so I know nothing about it, but if someone had the knowhow on how to set up the kind of community we need, that would be awesome! We need something that can only be viewed by the people in the group, so completely locked to anyone without permission. And yeah, I'm not really keen on posting pics of myself either! But I figure if we do it without faces in the pics it should be pretty safe, and it would be heaps and heaps of extra motivation, since you would want people to see how much better you're looking over time, and also you'll feel great when three months down the track you can look back and see how much you've changed. :D

And yeah, this was meant to be more of a 'FITNESS!!!!' thing than an 'I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT!' thing, and generally speaking if you're eating well and exercising your weight should end up healthy anyway. And let's everyone remember while we're doing this that muscle weighs more than fat, so you could end up puting on a little weight in the beginning. XZ

Oooh, I'm so keen for this now! Is everyone excited?!  >:-)

Yeah, I haven't been able to get it to work for the last couple of days either, and now it will open the main page and let me log in, but after that no pages will load and I eventually just get the 'server timeout' error message. :( Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon, will let everyone know when things are up and running, although at this rate it might take a couple of days. Working on the email screening questions and guidelines.  I'm totally open to suggestions for the rules, the name, and anything else related to the comm.

I PM'd these to Max, but I figure I'll just post them here anyway.  These are the tentative guidelines, not the questions:

1)  Treat others with respect.  Transphobia, homophobia, heterosexism, etc. will not be tolerated in this community. Disrespectful comments will be deleted and the offending member will be removed from the community.
2)  Use "I" Statements and avoid speaking for others.
3)  All pictures and long posts of text must be placed behind an lj-cut*.  NWSF (not safe for work) posts must be placed behind a cut as well.
4)  Copy-pasting or otherwise re-posting another member's posts or pictures will result in an automatic, permanent ban.  This includes sharing another member's photos off-site (such as a personal website, tumblr, blogs, forums, etc).
5)  All posts must be friends-only/locked.
6)  Pictures may include faces or other identifying characteristics if you so choose.  However, realize that not all members will post pictures with faces or other distinguishing features.
7)  Photos are not mandatory but are encouraged in order to track progress and gain support from other members.  Changes are not always apparent when looking at ourselves.
8 )  Please remember and respect that not everyone has the same goals and that the primary purpose of this community is to gain support and have accountability for those goals.

Additions?  Subtractions?  (Multiplications?)

Hm, I've been kind of thinking about this and...do you have to track progress? Or is it cool to still be a part of the community, helping out and stuff, and maybe occasionally posting updates of your own?

Because I do sort of like the idea of a place for sharing tips and pointers and such as a community, but as I said, I'm horrible at actually tracking progress and everything. I know there's already sites like that, but we already have a built-in community feel for this one in a way and I never tend to stick to the other sites (hard for me to get involved, so to speak).
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: Adio on July 27, 2011, 05:50:06 PM
No, I don't think you have to track progress.  That was just stuff I typed up based on other comms and what was talked about in this thread.  It can be about whatever (fitness related).  Also, if someone would like to make a comm or other place for us to do this, I don't mind at all.
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!
Post by: MaxAloysius on July 27, 2011, 05:58:34 PM
Looks pretty good to me, anyone have anything else they think should go into the rules?

Also, as Adio said before, don't forget we will have email screening questions for this community to try and keep out those who don't want to participate. It will be as private as we can make it, so hopefully that will relieve some of the worry about posting pictures and information. :)

@Noah G. : I know what you mean, I've been to some of those sites before and I just couldn't ever get into them. I think that was some of the motivation behind this as well, we're already such a great community, and it would be awesome to do soemthing like this with people we already know and have spent time around.

I don't think it should be a problem. While the main idea was for us to post individual progress and have peer support, we'll also need things like exercise and healthy eating tips. The community should just be a place for us to pool our knowledge I think, as well as get the support we need on our own individual fitness journeys. :P

awesome guys, I'm excited at how quickly this group seems to be comming together, and I totally agree with the rules posted.

Another question, do we want to keep this to just susans members, or to people who heard about the LJ page through here?  Or open it up to other guys from other sites as well?   I would think we should start as Susans guys only, at least at first, and maybe re-think new members later depending on how its working.

All right, cool. I mostly saw discussion of how to track progress and stuff so I figured I'd ask and be sure rather than kind of crash the party, so to speak, haha.

I can share progress and stuff, but I don't know as I could be too systematic or anything and really keep up with it in any sort of organized manner. That said...I'd be more than happy to cheer others on and offer encouragement and congratulations. I've also worked out for a good amount of my life (even power lifted for a time), I'm just trying to get back into it, and I try to educate myself on things like this, including healthy eating, so I feel confident in saying that I could contribute there.

QuoteI would think we should start as Susans guys only, at least at first, and maybe re-think new members later depending on how its working.

I'd have to say I agree with this. I think at least in the beginning we should keep it more close to the Susan's family. If it turns out we're all going really well and it gets a lot of interest, then we can always open it up to more people later. :)

@Noah G. : Awesome, sounds like you'll fit in just fine with what the community is being designed for. :) As to the progress thing, most of the people who will be doing it have lives/school/work, so I'm sure there will be a few people who find it hard to keep up with the week to week style progress report, but it hasn't been set in stone or anything. I think if people update when they can it will still be of great benefit to them. :)

Alright so I created the group, but there isn't anything there yet.  I'm going to watch Lady Gaga on sytycd and after that, I'll work on it some more and post the link here.

I agree that it should be for Susan's members first and then later, think about opening up the membership a bit.  However, I'd like to stress that it isn't a Susan's group.  It is a group for Susan's members.  Does that make sense?

Makes sense to me.

And Max, good to know for sure that I won't be crashing the group and progress updates aren't set in stone. But who knows, maybe it'll motivate me to keep track of things a little -- or at least give it a shot. Eh, I'll figure it out. I'd be one of those people though -- working and going to school (I can't really say that I'd have a life because as of yet...I don't, haha). Maybe though if keeping track of progress isn't frustrating I'll be better at it, though probably still not in any sort of truly organized way if that makes sense. We'll see, I guess.

awesome, i can't wait. i've been on livejournal in the past, but i'll make a new account if possible, seeing as my old account is out dated and was used for fanfic related stuff.

thisll be cool =)
and this lj group will be able to be private, so no one can see into it unless theyre a member right?
and i forget if it's possible, but i hope members for the group have to be 'screened' first and approved by the group admin or something first, so no strangers/trolls come in.

Battling lj right now to get the intro post up.  The formatting will just have to wait because their server is so messed up at the moment.  So it'll look ugly, but it's a start.

The membership will be screened, yes.  I've decided not to post the link here (thanks Jigsaw) and will PM it to those who have expressed interest either in this thread or through PM.  The comm will be as private as I know how to make it (locked entries, moderated, and screened membership, etc).  If someone knows how to make it even safer, let me know and I'll fix things.

ETA:  I finally got it to work and posted the welcome message.  I have to get some sleep soon though, but tomorrow I'll work on things some more and send out the PMs.

It's really great that so many of you guys have said you want to participate! I was a little worried when I originally posted about this that no one was going to be interested and I'd look like a loser. :P And don't worry guys, I've not used LJ before either, we can all learn about it together. ;) I'm super keen for this, I really need the kick up the bum it will hopefully provide to start doing the right thing. :P

Until it's set up, how would people prefer to go about this? Should it be a group effort, as in we all agree on set exercises, times, food etc, or does everyone want to go at it their own way and see how it goes for them? :) I suppose it all depends on what people want to get out of this. A relatively easy to follow, free plan might work out the best in the long run because everyone is dealing with the same amount of effort etc, but if some people want to work out a lot harder and build muscle more quickly, then individual plans might be the go. Alternatively we could go half way between the two and set down easy, medium and hard level plans that people could follow depending on what they wanted to do. What say you guys?

I hope everyone is enjoying the last day or two of freedom before we get down and dirty! ;)

And we should all say a great big thank you to Adio as well, since he's taking the time to set everything up for us! :D

We could do a  "I'm doing a ___ plan this week, who wants to join me" sort of thing.  That would leave more options for people who want to work on different things.

I'm interested, but I'm busy flying/moving in the next couple of weeks, and my internet connection is irregular at best. But I've been wanting to start moving in a fitter direction, maybe this will be the boost I need :p

This sounds great! I'm just about to start working out again, so it would be great to have some motivation to help me along!

For me, I'd prefer to follow my own workout plan rather than exercises set down by the group, but I'd enjoy sharing my exercise routine and nutrition ideas etc,  and giving others encouragement   :)

I don't think I've ever been this excited to start getting healthy (and lose all that cake fat I gained, lol)

My vote too is for individual workouts, especially as different guys may have different goals in mind. Perhaps that could be part of keeping track though? Posting the workouts and if they're not noticing the changes they want, feel something isn't quite working, or whatever else people can suggest other exercises that either they have found works for them or else that they have come across.

I vote for individual workouts but with the group support and encouragement as well as accountability. Just because with each of us we all have different lives and such. But I think we should all put our current stats when we start and some before photos for those who feel comfortable, and goals that we want, and what exercise and eating changes we are going to do. Maybe our vices too, just to put them out to each other so we can work better and see more results?

I am interested though I just have to wait to see if I even can work out again and what exercises I can do. It's really frustrating because I started doing P90X then had something f*** up in my eye so I see my eye surgeon in a few weeks.

haha, this is a great idea. I'm in.

I say individual workouts too. Base the competition on how much you've improved rather than who does the most push ups, sit ups, etc.

Post by: rexgsd on July 28, 2011, 01:29:24 PM
yeah,  i agree it should be more of a 'individual' type of work out, as some guys might like doing different things, or some might have excersize machines and some not, that sort of thing. though the motivation should still be there so i think something like a certain goal of working out a certain amount of time each day or week will be good ^ ^

I'd like to do this too. The main thing I'm interested in learning are some exercises/work outs I can do without equipment, besides sit ups, push ups, walking, etc. I suck about the accountability thing so hopefully having you guys around will actually get me to stick to a plan for longer than a week.   :)

Awesome! So it looks like individual plans are the go! :D I think this is a good idea because then we can see what's working for people, but it also means we're not all stuck doing the same thing. I think it will be interesting to see the different changes everyone's going through too, like I want to focus mainly on my pecs and abs, so I will work out those areas the most, but some other people might want to work more on their arms or legs etc.

I'm so keen for this. :D

I've got the very, very basics of the community there so it's okay to post.  More will come later as well as general formatting of the comm and some links to relevant sites.

If lj doesn't seem to be working, I apologize.  I think they've been having major issues for a couple days.  Things should be back to normal soon (things are already better from last night).  Once the site becomes easier to operate, I'll be able to work on it some more.

I'm sending the links now to everyone in this thread that has expressed interest.

ETA:  All PMs sent.

thanks for the pm!  got the link, and I should be able to get a LJ acct set up tonight.  I've never used it before either, but it was the first site I thought of that seemed like it might work.  I'm definitely going to wait to take my pics and everything till tomorrow or saturday, cause I'll have the house to myself then, and It could be really akward if my mom or  brother walk in on me or something.

Oh yes - I'm going away in under 2 weeks, so won't be able to post during that time.

hey guys. i'm trying to do my current measurements but kind of confused on how. they are all with the muscles/limb relaxed i'm guessing. and would chest be like, over the 'breasts'? (i havent had top surgery yet but i do bind) and if it says for example, forearm, would i measure in the middle of it? not trying to be nit picky, but just want to do it right haha

also, where exactly would i measure for hips and for waist?  ???

I'll totally join the party. Probably be more of a lurker, waiting around for advice and all (I'm not competitive unless it's games of MTG, sadly) and I'll probably be hesitant to post many pictures because I'm kind of...gross.

I did just decided yesterday though that I'm going to, finally, try and get into this aerobic tribal fusion dance...stuff that my girlfriend is into. And Ben's getting me into tai chi. So, yeah. It'll be something.

If everyone's cool with that, I'll definitely hop on board.

Yep, no deadline.  I still have two pending members who have not sent their email screening questions to the email address listed on the profile page of the comm.  For our members safety, I can't add you unless you send me the email.

Hey guys! Wow, it's been the night from hell...the evil viruses on my laptop finally won out yesterday morning, and since then I've had to do a complete factory reset on the damn thing.  :embarrassed: I have to go to work now, but when I get back I'll be puting up my info. Have to work out how this 'lj' thing works first.  ;)

Thanks again Adio, the comm looks amazing!

This is perfect, sorry I didn't check this thread earlier. I'd like to join too please! I will be starting as of August (tomorrow haha) but tbh I have no idea where to start, it has to be home workouts at the moment for me, I was thinking of doing the 100 push up challenge, squats and whatever will work for pecs. But it's a sea of information and different things to do and I def. need help, and motivation :)

Oh my GOD! RL is killing me! Just jumped on before bed to say sorry to all the guys taking part in this, I've just been bumped up to management training at work and it's right when everyone's getting hyped for Christmas, so life is pretty hectic at the moment. I've been away from the forum for ages... :(

So I don't know if I'm still a mod in the community (haven't had time to check) but I just wanted to drop a line and let you guys know I'm still on for this, and started my new diet today! Will post about it after work tomorrow. :)

I'm very much interested. I actually have kept up a really nice workout system for a while now. But had a stumbling block over the summer when I studied abroad, felt awkward being that one guy in a room of girls...
I've gotten back on a schedule, and come campus I'll have the gym again.

Since I've been working out, I could throw out some tips for you guys. The first being to schedule your days. Personally I use my Blackberry to schedule sleep time, food, and exercise, and I use a similar scheduling program on my computer, called Pimero, to keep up my academic schedule, classes, study time, etc. It really helps when you get into a daily or weekly routine.

Now that I have joined my desire to work out has gone to crap.  I will be active on the site after my surgery date and I start walking.  I have less then a week before I fly out so no sense in me starting some massive workout now.

I do want to record my measurements and weight before surgery then after and see just what the surgery and mansculpture have done and pray I don't swell up to much.  I think just the loss of that weight will be motivation to keep it off and keep going with it.  Kinda a jump start of sorts.
Title: Re: Looking for workout buddies!

Well there's no need to start straight away. :) Like I said, I started two weeks after most of the other people on there, but it's not really going to make much of a difference over all, since everyone's following their own plan.

I think everyone in the group would be keen to see how much of a change surgery makes for you, so if you do end up posting before and after measurements on the comm that would be really cool. :)
