Title: Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO
Post by: Jigsaw on July 28, 2011, 07:21:38 PM
Just curious if anybody was planning to play Star Wars; The Old Republic?

If so, are you a member of a awesome guild?

I am thinking seriously of playing it and even starting a guild where people can be who they are not not deal with drama and crap.

Figure I would start a thread about it since I did not see one and see what the community feel here is.

I haven't seriously gotten involved in SW as an MMO, but I would consider it.

This a character I toyed with in SL:

It seems too restrictive to me. It's just more of everything I don't want in an MMO.

I do love that Twi'lek character model though.

I'm super looking forward to Guild Wars 2. I'm hoping the dynamic events system works out better than the one used in Rift.

Since I haven't played in SW:TOR yet, I would like to hear why you say that.

I've been in beta, and used to be fairly active on the forums. It strongly seems to me to be another standard WoW-style leveler/raider MMO with a few gimmicks (voice acting) thrown in.

Those games can be fun for a wile, but they're not something I'd want to pay a sub fee for.

What I want is a more dynamic world, one where choices matter and players' actions can actually alter the landscape. Doing the same easy WoW raids over and over every week gets tiring, and when new raids come out they just feel like a somewhat harder version of older raids. I feel MMOs need to make a fundamental change in their basic design, and I think Guild Wars 2 is a step in the right direction.

Fascinating! This really does address why I've gotten tired of so many video games.

I just need something new.  Rift is fun, but population is slowly dying out and it has a bit to much solo play then suddenly you need a huge group or lots of guildmates and friends to do any raids.

I am hoping Star Wars would be a bit different and Role Play would be a bit better I think.  At least it has a history.  Just have not heard anything about crafting and I really really miss being a full time crafter like Star Wars galaxies had before the upgrade that made me quit quickly after working my butt off to unlock 2 jedi.

I've been playing MMOs since 2001. Ive beta tested Star Wars Galaxies, EverQuest 2, EVE, World of Warcraft, Conan, Lineage 2, and several smaller titles. Even messed around as a Game Master for EVE and EverQuest 2. Worked on Staff for Mmorpg.com too.

I always have the same advice no matter which game it is:

I never play a game until at least 3 months into it. Saves me a lot of headaches from bug issues, technical difficulties, and usually a MMO price tends to go down 10 dollars in the first 3 or 6 months (WoW was one of the only MMOs Ive seen where the price stayed the same for almost 2 years).

Right now, I'm in a pretty good guild in WoW. It's called Taint and it's the 3rd largest guild in the game (which has like 8 million players). Its a LGBT and LGBT allie guild and despite it's size, we all are pretty close. We've been featured in a few magazines and we have a good rapport with Blizzard.

I know Taint is going to open a guild in SW:TOR but I think they are going to wait 3 months too to see how things pan out.

I'm going to play it for sure ^_^ depending on who I am playing with I will most likely go with a Sith or a Jedi.

I saw Taint was recruiting already.  They have more then 50 people apparently.  Only negative I saw to them was being able to RP.  The g/f likes to RP. I can take or leave it personally.  I will let her know they may be better suited then the guild we are considering and let her decide.

We thought about leading one for a few weeks now and decided it would be better to just be a member since we want to stay active in our normal lives and not feel like we have to be somewhere.  Will be a challenge for me to follow since I have led either guilds or raid groups for many years.  At least if the g/f is playing she can spin her chair around and hit me if I act up.

there's quite a few people in the guild who RPs in the game while we just regular chat in Vent.

I tried the RP thing in other MMOs. It's fun at first but then it just becomes monotonous. :(

I can't play MMOs without RPing, they get boring otherwise. I need to tell a story, and for my character to have a history and a purpose. Hacking monsters for no reason gets old fast.

I played LOTRO for a time, and had an amazing RP experience. We had politics, betrayal, conspiracy, murder (everyone who joined one of the RP guilds involved in our story had to agree to accept permadeath if "killed" in RP) and it was a blast. It was probably the most fun I've ever had in an MMO.

It all fell apart rather suddenly. I'm hoping GW2 is a success, I've been missing RP a lot.

Proudmoore

best dang server in Wow lol.

And I love Taint.  I never had a guild where we had an all girl sleepover at someone's house before until Taint.  I'm not normally into group "hook ups" but i always try something once. I was not disappointed LOL.

Taint and Stonewall champions are just the best guilds I have ever seen. And i am not just saying that for sex or anything. They have real life parties, awesome vent chats, a non stop supply of raiding adventures and the men there are absolutely wonderful. Especially the straight gay-ally ones lol.

The group girls hook up resulted in me having a relationship (real life lol) with a wonderful girl. She taught me sign language (she is deaf) and she and I are wonderful friends to this day despite our relationship ending.

Out of all the guilds I have ever been part of, I never had a guild as involving as Taint.

Funny... I've got two lifetime subs to LOTRO, am on the Landroval server (the unofficial RP server), and always hated RP.  I was even in a light RP guild, but never did the RP events because it bored me.  Then MMOs bored me and I haven't played in forever.  With all that's going on in my life, I can't say I'll tempt myself into going back.

You were on Landroval? I was there December '10 to April '11, pretty much all I did was RP. I didn't bother leveling my character until after the guild alliance fell apart, and a month later I quit from boredom. It's the RP that draws me in, gameplay is always a secondary consideration.

I played a bit from December '10 to February '11 but not since (though I've been subbed for 2.5 years).  What was the alliance, if I may ask?  I was in one of those too! ;D  I know quite a few of the kinships who do that sort of thing.

I finally got into beta.  I joined a guild and then got dumped because I had not posted but 34 times in 24 days on their forum.   Are you kidding me?????
Back to the hunt I go and may try the suggested guild here since the one I had applied to earlier must have had a god complex. (Actually the leader did for the most part, but I was trying to play nice).

Anyway, hope to meet up with some of you in the game.
