"5-Alpha Reductase is the enzyme that facilitates the conversion of testosterone to another hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When a genetic male is deficient in 5-Alpha Reductase, the powerful DHT hormone is not produced. While testes and Wolffian ducts do exist internally, the male external genitals are similar in size and appearance to those of a normal female. If left intact, an adult 5-Alpha Reductase Deficiency individual will appear generally male but with small genitals and no facial hair. Sometimes the parents of children with 5-ARD are encouraged to raise their children as girls."
wow. that's just, wow. in one sense, i guess it helps me feel better that a "cis-guy" could have a condition similar to the situation us trans-guys are in. On the other hand, why the hell would thep arents be encouraged to raise them as girls? that's horrible, and abuse imo.

it's similar to the cases of infants with penis abnormalities that had "genital correction" shortly after birth because it is/was believed that a man with a non-functioning or absent penis couldn't fit in a socially and sexually male role in society. (that's a bear in its own that i'd rather not discuss here as we all know that isn't true.) i guess it just makes me feel better even knowing that somewhere there are actually "real" (in the genetic, chromosomal sense) men with vaginas.

exactly what i was thinking
That reminds me, I was watching Tyra, and they had this guy who was born intersexed and his parents had decided to surgically alter his genitals at birth and raise him as a girl. That obviously didn't go too well.
@Trista: That shouldn't be legal :/
They should wait for the kid to be old enough to know what they are mind-wise, then change it to fit.

I agree. And this is also exactly why there needs to be much more trans-awareness in the world. I bet the parents didn't even have a clue that their kid night not be female in the head. they probably just assume that the kid was a blank slate, and would be whatever gender they raised it as. And now we're learning that that's just not the case. but the parents might not have had a clue.

And generations of parents were told that if they forced their feminine boys and masculine girls to do more "gender appropriate" things they would outgrow their crossgender behavior and be well adjusted adults. :(
ive read multiple articles about how intersex babies and tots are being surgically abused i think their bodies should be left alone until they start presenting as male or female.... david reimer
Didnt they learn after the whole john money thing??

Medical law dictates any hermaphrodite whos genitalia is changed at BIRTH MUST BE CONVERTED INTO A VAGINA AND ESTRO given to them so that they may grow up to be a healthy women. Apparently its easier to live as a girl thats why they do this ::)

No. The delusion of socially constructed gender identity continues.
Haha.... next time instead of coming out as FTM i'm gonna say I have this.
Perhaps it will help them understand a little better than I am, in fact, MALE and that I'm suffering from this.

wouldn't you be lying though? i mean im not one to judge but we had a big discussion about lying and saying that you're intersex. i dont mean to assume your medical history, but if you've ever menstruated then you can be positive you dont have this disorder, as the men have no uterus or ovaries.

I didn't say that there are NO men with a uterus or ovaries, but this specific condition does not involve it.
This seems to point that mutations of the 5-ARD in women leads to PCOS
"other disorders - associated with the SRD5A2 gene
In women, certain polymorphisms in the SRD5A2 gene may affect the risk of developing a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is characterized by a hormonal imbalance that can lead to irregular menstruation, acne, excess body hair (hirsutism), and weight gain. Some genetic variations increase the activity of steroid 5-alpha reductase 2 in the ovaries, which could contribute to the signs and symptoms of this condition. Other variations, including the common polymorphism Val89Leu, reduce the activity of steroid 5-alpha reductase 2 and are associated with a reduced risk of developing PCOS."

No, I am well aware I don't have it; I'm transsexual. And yes I would be lying but I don't care.
The point is people could understand better and sympathize with someone who was intersex because they see without a doubt that it's not a choice... and that I'm not some girl who wants to be a man.
I'm not gonna go around telling everyone I'm intersex now... but it's an excuse I might use on occasions.

Read the comments on the article LivingInGrey posted and you will see that intersex people are not treated any better than trans people. Most of the comments on there are people laughing at him and making ignorant statements.
That's unfortunate.
I thought I had a way out.
Out of discrimination from idiotic religious fundies, that is.

If people are going to hate you, they're going to hate you no matter what you do.
As for the ignorant comments, they're just internet trolls hiding behind their computers to spew whatever dumb crap comes to mind. Their only purpose is to say inflammatory things becuase they crave the attention. You could write an article about ANYTHING and they would trash it just for the attention.
I am don't think it's about it being more common, it's just easier to take away then add.

Don't forget alot of doctors were convinced a man with a small penis wasn't much of a man...

that was basically the idea. i mentioned it in the original post. it used to be the prevailing attitude that a man without a "normal" penis wouldn't find a proper place in society.

So just about any FtM disproves that theory. :)
