Ok, just when I thought I had heard it all, I noticed (especially during this past week) that my genitals smell VERY much like a vagina. This is NOT something I have ever read happening. I'm going crazy here (mostly due to still liking the smell of women). Is this normal??? I mean I really haven't heard of *this* effect from HRT before. I mean it smells *exactly* the same as one. ???
Melissa
Melissa,
I am guessing that you have not had reconstruction done at this time. What I have heard from TS women is that the shaft softens, shrinks and also has a fluid on the outside, this fluid (wetness) is from hormones. I would think it would have a odor that is simular to that of a female. The line between male and female is not so fixed ya know lol. You'll get used to it, it's just another change your body is going through.
Peace
Taylor
Hmm, it hasn't shrunk one bit yet and I don't think it's softened any more than it was before, but yeah, there's moisture on the outside. The smell is especially strong when I um...take a #1 as if pee isn't the only thing coming out. I wouldn't be so concerned if I had found some kind of reference to it in all the HRT change documentation I've seen including out own wiki. :-\
Melissa
I thought the internal smell was more from the type of bacteria which live in it not so much from secretions.
I noticed the wetness though and it didn't relly smell like much.
(5 months one week on HRT btw)

That's the same thing I heard, which is kind of why I was puzzled. I had only heard about this from one person and that was jan_c, who was IS. So I am trying to figure out if this *is* an HRT effect (most likely conclusion) or just something else. I've been on HRT for a little over a year at this point.
Melissa
I smell totally different Down There since HRT. I don't know where it's coming from, but I notice it whenever I use the bathroom (hence exposing the area suddenly). It's not exactly pleasant, it's sorta... MUSKY. And it's not necessarily from the genitals, it's the area itself somehow... maybe from being so warm and covered-up all the time. Sweat? Body scent? I dunno.
And yes, I recognize the scent from my wife, though if she ever reads this she's gonna kill me...
Kate
Ok, that doesn't help me very much Kate. You've already told me your urethra is in the incorrect location, which is indicative that you're IS. I'm trying to look for counter-examples to provide evidence that this is normal for a TS on HRT.

Welllllll, you *really* have to stretch the definition of "IS" to include me in there. Technically, yes perhaps, but realistically... my parts and internal stuff are all male (as far as I know).
I didn't smell like this before HRT, and I only noticed it after being on HRT for awhile.
The only other caveat though is that my sense of smell changed as well. I'm *extremely* sensitive to body odour now (yay, such fun), both male AND female. So it's possible the scent was always there and I'm only noticing it now.
Kate
I didn't notice any change in odor's that could have possibly caused by HRT. I respectfully doubt that it would happen. As mentioned the natural female odors that emanate from that region are normally produced by bacteria that healthy women naturally produce.
I don't think that you have the parts MEW. :)

Hmm, do you think it's possible that in combination with moisture excreeted through skin in combination with the way that I tuck could possibly allow for the right conditions for the bacteria to manifest? ???
Melissa
Everything I've ever read on HRT states a change in bodily odors - from metallic and acrid to a sweet, musky smell for MtFs.
The genital areas tend to be moist compared with the rest of the body, so the sweat smell would be more pronounced. :)
Yep that's a possibility I guess, I remember that I myself used to sweat there myself.
Steph
I'm not IS and yes I have noticed a distinctly "feminine" odor from that region after HRT as did my roommate before her SRS. I think the most likely culprit is the lack of air flow in that region when you tuck or wear a lot of tight undies and the rapid growth of those odor causing bacteria. The timing associated with HRT is probably more coincidental than anything.

Exactly. My sweat from Down There absolutely, positively, without any doubt smells differently since starting HRT. I don't tuck or anything, I do nothing else differently. It's not a genital thing per se, but as you say, it's just an area that gets warm and moist moreso than others.
Kate
See thats why I like this place ;D I have been thinking a was a little koo koo with this smell thing.
I barely notice the pantie region and wrote that off due to tucking. But other areas or my general order was suddenly different I thought it was in my head :-\
well ok guess maybe there is sofen to it
Kirstina
After considering 's explaination it makes perfect sense. HRT does change overall body odor from what is characteristically considered male to what is considered female or vice versa. Since the genital region is typically moist and warm then that odor would be more pronounced as said.

So I guess the general consensus is that HRT changes body odor including in the genital region which will make it smell different, but if you tuck then it provides the same conditons for the bacteria to grow that normally occur in a vaginal cavity and the combination of the hrt body odor changes combined with the bacteria that may grow from tucking results in the smell of a vagina.

Oh please forgive me for chiming in, but I have a theory. I tried really hard not to open this thread all day, but here I am...
Melissa...I think the combination of HRT, secretions, moistiure, body heat, tucking AND the fabrics used for womens underwear is what is causing this. I would also venture a guess that HRT has altered your sense of smell somewhat. Men and women's senses work differently and you have been on HRT for more than a year now, your senses are going to markedly different than a year ago.
Thanks TWC. I didn't mean to start sucha controversial thread, but was just curious about this unexplained phenomenon. I had heard the smell changes AFTER surgery, but had never heard of before. Sometime I feel like we're pioneers in this stuff. Anyways, I think you're right TWC, which is pretty close to what I said albeit with more factors.

I've had several people I'm out to comment that my scent has changed since I've been on HRT.
PLUS, there is this dog that lives at the folks next door. Buster hates men, and I have had to endure the thing barking, lunging and snapping at me when its keeper let it out of the back yard.
Until recently. Buster now trots over, sniffs, wags his tail and waits for pets. The neighbor lady who keeps him hasn't yet noticed the dog is much better behaved around me...
I vote for those general body-odor changes, sweat and tucking for producing the female odor.
Your mileage may vary, check theater listings for showtimes...

When I saw this thread I just has to reply.I've been on hrt for 9 mos. about a month ago I noticed this odd smell in the house and I couldn't pin it down, so I changed the bedding, washed the clothes, did the dishes, took the garbage out, mopped the floor, did the carpets; after all this I sat down being well pleased with myself, yup, you got it...IT was STILL there! So I took a shower and went to my AODA session,When I told Sandy she just howled with laughter. I had started my period? That's when I realized that I had made the turn from T to E. I have admit I love the odor because every time I smell it I know that I am on my way. But in the beginning I couldn't figure where I hid that fish! :D Love Jolene

All I know is that one day I woke up and realized, "Hey! I can skip showering for a couple days and not smell like I rolled around in Satan's feces! Wohoo!"
And I'm certain my own crotch smells different too.
It's so nice to not be utterly disgusted by your own smell. I hadn't even realized how distasteful it was until it changed. I never actually thought to analyze it. I was just happy that it happened, and treated it as a physical manifestation of my progress.

Male odor = acrid/acidic
Female odor = musky
I had a comment from someone I'm out to at work about my odor. She said it has changed and become very female.
Karen
I observed a diametric change in genital scent when I began HRT, many a month ago.
I noticed a greater change toward the feminine following the orchi and penectomy.
But when I switched "E" administration modes from oral to injectable, my genital area now has exactly the same scent as a vagina, too.
This was unexpected, but quite satisfying and actually psychologically uplifting.
whoa! :embarrassed: try vagisil products. oh but there's a problem, you gotta have a vagina first. >:D
It would seem that many of the posters here have been wandering the country side smelling female genital area's as a point of comparison. Hmmm this also begs the question "What do female genitals smell like?". Of course I'm assuming that we are talking about clean healthy genitals, and I'm assuming that folks are using their fingers to sample these aromas emanating from below. Of course there are some who are more flexible than others who may in fact be able to bend over and actually take in the sample with their own nose.
This also begs another question... Does a person now need to smell like a woman to be considered one? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh the things folks conjure up to validate that they are who they think they are.
Personally I have always considered myself a woman therefore the aromas created by my body must be those of a woman :)

The absurdity of this is that on top of all the issues many have with their validation, some would further complicate this issue by throwing one's smell into the pot. There are far more important issues to worry about than how one's genitals smell. I would also like to add that depending on the person HRT may or may not cause one's natural sent to be altered so I would advise those who's genitals do not smell like those of a woman's not to worry.
Again you missed my smiles :) maybe there is a need to adjust your morning coffee routine.

I do believe that I am beginning to like you, Steph.
(bold)
I would concur with this.
In itself, altered scent is meaningless and not indicative of that which comprises the mind and soul.
If a girl, as a function purely of unique biochemistry [we're all unique], fails to exhibit such altered scent secondary to either androgen suppression or elimination and/or exogenous estrogen administration, this in no way negates nor militates against her femininity or is indicative of the level or intensity of her GID issue.
How could it?
I perceived this general dialog as just informal, light-hearted and conversational.
But you're right; there are far more important things worthy of concern, insofar as transition is concerned.

I don't want to dampen the spirit of fun on this thread, but are you sure you're staying hydrated? I'm not on HRT yet, but if I'm even a little dehydrated, I can tell just because my "personal" odor is noticeable. The odor is proportional to the amount I'm dehydrated.

I listened to a recorded interview with Marcie Bowers and she says that the skin of the penis is similar to the lining of a natal female's vagina.
This leads me to believe it would grow the same organisms which contribute to feminine odor. Makes sense to me anyway. It would also explain why since my transition-uh, never mind. TMI :icon_redface:

There is very little that offends me, and I've tried to be open-minded about this thread. But the truth is it's quite on the edge of polite conversation, it's gone on way too long and there's no ignore thread button.
This is not a subject I wish to continue to think about every time I check the forums. Would it be rude to ask the moderators to lock it, please?

I don't want to dampen the spirit of fun on this thread, but are you sure you're staying hydrated? I'm not on HRT yet, but if I'm even a little dehydrated, I can tell just because my "personal" odor is noticeable. The odor is proportional to the amount I'm dehydrated.
I'm not knocking your odor :P , I just want to be sure you don't forget your daily intake of water.
Thanks, but I drink plenty of water. Because my original question was answered and this thread keeps continuing, I will lock it as has Brianna has requested.
